Yeah, so I went onto the UPEK website, the company that makes the fingerprint readers for the M13/1530 and they have a driver released at the beginning of july that is not listed on the dell website...so alot of you may not have it
I have tried it out and have to say that is a great improvement over the older deriver supplied at dell.com. It seems to register prints better and has a new digital locker feature, which is basically an encrypted folder that is decrypted with your print. It also has a new GUI.
Note: you will have to uninstall your current suite, make sure you select the option in the uninstaller to save your profiles or else you will have to re-enroll and redo all settings and saved passwords, ect...

UPDATE: Link Updated...
-
Thanks, ill give it a shot.
-
Anyone try it? How does it work? Any improvement, features???
-
I don't think your link is pointing to the right place. Shouldn't this be it:
http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/drivers/windows.asp -
I'll give this a try - my fingerprint reader SUCKS.
-
mine doing well, ... but, does it work in Vista Bussines 32bit as well?
-
The full protector Suite v582 is not available for download anymore unless you ask someone for a P2P link -
They are vendor specific anyway and dell hasn't got it for download yet as usual
-
Check out the updated link guys, it should be working now
-
allows pass bank in firefox w/ dled extension
very useful if you're a firefox user -
I found that the software that came with my machine works pretty well. Don't know if I'll go through the trouble of the upgrade unless there are some really good reviews here.
-
It's a REALLY good upgrade I personally highly suggest it
-
I have found that it improves recognition greatly, and it has an a "Personal Safe" feature that can be unlocked with your print...it only took me 10 min to upgrade, well worth the trouble...
-
Ok...so I installed this new one and now there's a "PersonalSafe" icon on my desktop that I cannot move or remove. It's on "My Computer" too. Nothing useful comes up using a google search. Anyone?
-
Phil,
can you tell us how you found this file, I can't find it anywhere on the Upek website? -
-
I tried that but nothing pops up when I click Applications. I just uninstalled it then reinstalled 5.6
-
i actually found it through windows problem reports and solutions, the Upek driver was crashing on me and it told me there was a solution and it pointed me to the upek site, it brought up a page that had the update on it. I downloaded and installed it. I have looked on the Upek site since then and was also unable to locate it, but if I click on the link in the Problem Reports and Solutions area, it seems to bring it up just fine... weird
No worries though, the update works flawlessly
EDIT: To the poster who was unable to remove the personal safe icon from their desktop, swipe your finger and hit "Control Center" then under Applications hit "File Safe", then hit the "Personal Safe" tab in the window that pops up, uncheck the box labeled "Show personal safe on desktop"...not hard to figure out... -
-
Don't click on Applications, click the "File Safe" option under the Applications heading
-
There was none, and like I said, I uninstalled it already.
-
alright, just trying to help you out...
FYI, it should have looked like thisAttached Files:

rep +!!!
Thanks a lot man! -
i installed the 5.8 over 5.6, maybe thath as something to do with it. -
-
Paid for and installed this version almost a month back... and needless to say, it's awesome. And the Personal Safe feature, which was present in XP with UPEK, was gone in Vista since release, is back again.... Yipee !!
-
Hmmm, so it should be paid for. OTOH, they don't list the M1330 as supported. Perhaps that is because it is supposedly included (when Dell get around to providing a download).
Well I can wait a bit longer to get it working with Firefox (I resisted downloading from the helpfully provided links from third part sites as it is not a good practice - particularly for an important security application/drivers).
Actually I am not sure that (other than Firefox support) it offers me a great deal new. What I would like is support in BIOS for BIOS password etc but I think that is probably the BIOS which needs modifying to enable that.
If fingerprint recognition is easier than I wonder if they just lowered the tolerance on the match (which we could do ourselves anyway in the settings). -
just for clarification, this is not from a third party site, it is from the manufacturer's website. Hence, it is completely secure. Sometimes dell is slow or completely incapable of providing up-to-date drivers on their site, so I did some looking...
This should work on both the M1530 and M1330 for sure and probably the studio as well... -
Well... just to clear up a couple of facts....
1. The software needs to be paid for. It's single license and the download link provided on Page 1 is the one UPEK provides when you buy the software, for a period of one year. And you can download it, only for yourself, as and when you please.
2. The password bank does not work with the latest version of Firefox, I have 3.0.1 , so I can comment for this version.
3. The scanning engine is way better than the last version.
4. The "Personal Safe" feature is a great application and the biggest reason to make me spend $20 on it.
5. Overall, the looks and aesthetics are much better than the earlier version... the one provided by dell.
6. This is 100% compatible with M1330, M1530 and the Studio range. Heck it's even fully compatible on Toshiba. Have also loaded it on my Qosmio G35.
Hope this helps..... -
But didn't you theoretically pay for it when you ordered your notebook from dell? At least that was my impression...
-
Thanks for the updated link philiptha.
I think I am a bit confused now. I was going to just uninstall the one I got from DELL and install this one. Based on the comment above, will we be asked for a license fee, etc. after one year?
As for the Firefox, I am aware that there is a plugin that makes this work with FF3. When/if I install it, I'll also include that plugin, since I only use FF3.
Thanks in advance! -
Yep... you will be asked for a license fee.... but it's only around $20. Alternatively, if you wanna save on that, just click on the download link on the first page...
Also, could you guide me to the appropriate plugin for Firefox that allows me to use it with the UPEK application.
Thanks -
as said above, you won't be asked to pay if you click the link on the first page...
I have not attempted to install the firefox plugin as of yet, so I can't help you there further than offering this link...
http://upek.com/support/downloads/passwordbank/default.asp -
I just uninstalled 5.6 and installed 5.8 from the link in the first post by philiptha. When uninstalling the old version, you are presented with the option of whether to keep the stored data or delete it; I kept it...
The new version -as stated before- works lot faster with less "please repeat" errors. In addition, the plugin for FF3 is included in the installation (there is no need to download the extension again). When you first start FF after the installation, there will be a pop up message saying that FF3 is detected and you'd need to install a plugin. When you click Yes, it opens the "add-ons" window and installs the plugin as usual.
As mentioned, this version has "Personal Safe" as well...
Thanks again for the update!!! -
Strange... This is the message I get with the newest edition of firefox...
Please click on apropriate extension package to install Password Bank support for your Firefox browser.
Firefox 1.0 - 1.1
Firefox 1.5 - 2
To install support for Firefox please set Firefox as your default browser and retry the operation.
There is no Password Bank extension compatible with your version of Firefox.
Anyways, hardly an issue as i don't use the password bank anyways, but a great application nevertheless. -
I installed this newer version the other day and it was working fine at first, but now no matter how many times I try I can never seem to get it to read my fingerprint successfully. My finger actually feels like it's burning from how many times I've tried and failed.
-
re-enroll? make sure you aren't changing anything from the way that you originally enrolled in the way you swipe your finger...
-
yep... just re-enroll. And also, it helps if your fingers are a little damp when you swipe. Not wet, just damp.
-
off topic i know, but why do you look so happy driving your car in the pic? are you not paying for the gas? lol
-
UhOH the link posted by OP is no longer working. Could anybody please provide a new link?
-
Go to the 1330 64 bit thread (search the forum, it is a huge thread) and on the front page is the link to Upek's page which has the fingerprint program download. For some reason it only works in IE, not firefox so try IE. It is free, there is no reason to pay for it.
-
link updated...
-
Any suggestions? I'd LOVE To upgrade my software, as the fingerprint reader is sporatic, at best.
(I switched to IE, and it still gave an error message)
thx -
I'm in the same boat as Shel here.
It says the key is not valid. -
I remember seeing a rapidshare link in the m1330 Vista64 thread. Look into the first post where number of drivers, applications, etc. are listed...
-
been using it on vista x64 with no problems and even better registration.
-
Here's a link which works, as of today, Sept. 19th....
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=714Q0SCC
This seems to work MUCH better then the original software... I've swiped my finger now, with the new software, over ten times, not one error!
It also includes some new software, such as Personal Safe (Store docs in a password protected folder)
So far, this is GREAT! I was really somewhat disappointed in the fingerprint reader... if it only works one time out of three or four, it defeats the purpose of speeding up logging on to your computer, or entering passwords.
Now, it seems, it's working flawlessly!
Also, if you swipe your finger while your computer is on, you'll be presented with a window which allows you to Lock Computer, Register Sites, Unlock/Lock the Personal Safe program, get Help, etc. etc. Very cool! You can even assign programs to launch, depending on which finger you swipe...swipe your index finger, one program launchs, swipe your middle finger, something else launches (use your imagination... I'm not going there)... haven't tried this, but read it in the help section.
Thanks to the original poster for bringing this to our attention! -
I will be uploading it to rapidshare so everyone can get it...
this will be a direct upload of the original archive, the only difference will be the host...
EDIT: LINK UPDATED -
Have a question about the Personal Safe feature/folder:
I realize that any file you put in there undergoes encryption, and opening the folder requires finger swipe or the backup password. What happens to that folder, if the hard drive is removed from the laptop and plugged in as an external HD to another computer? Since the new computer will not have the software installed, can you open it and have access to files?
Thanks! -
my guess is that you will be unable to access the files since there would be no decrypt them
