Well, that's good if the laptop is stolen, but it's bad if the computer dies and you want to recover files by taking the hard drive out. I'll search in their support pages to see if there is a solution for this...
-
-
that would be "no software to decrypt them" not "no decrypt them" wow, I knew what i was saying, can't say that for the rest of you though...
-
After looking to their help files, online support, etc, I couldn't find anything helpful on decrypting files on another device. It must be something, right. As I mentioned above, what happens if you need to recover files from a dead computer (with a not-so-dead hard drive). I'll try e-mailing them... -
-
But then... one might say, we've already paid for the application, (even if it's the older version) while buying the XPS. So what the heck.... -
Anyone with skinny fingers having a problem using this? I can register with my middle finger, but can never register with my fore finger. I updated to the latest driver and still can't get it to work.
-
Personally verified with my external hard disk
There's a way to recover files or anything encrypted with the latest version of the UPEK application in case the laptop dies for any other reason than hard disk failure, fingerprint device malfunction or any other reason.
Here goes...
When you first install the application, you get two options :
1> Store fingerprints in device (stores the fingerprints in the fingerprint device itself, which has an inbuilt memory, many probably didn't know this)
2> Store in Hard Disk (encrypts and stores the fingerprints in the hard disk itself. This option also enables you to store more than 20 prints, which is the limitation you face when you store prints to the fingerprint device). Also, this option is absolutely safe as noone can ever access the fingerprint template on the hard disk.
Choose the 2nd option (hard disk). When you select this, you are automatically enabling the option to use the hard disk plugged in any other machine which has a fingerprint reader. You can also use an external USB fingerprint readers if the other computer doesn't have a reader. If there is no access to the same, as a last resort, you can also use the backup password to access the files... but only if you install fingerprints to hard disk.
Hope this helps. Do rep if you find this useful -
I don't want to belabour the point but if you open this link http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/psql_winqual/psql_upgrade.asp in IE you should come to the download page for the 5.8.2 software which you can then download and install for free. At any rate, that is what I did and I am enjoying my free software
.
-
Seems you're right and I got a bad deal...
This is where I went to get my UPEK application
http://upek.com/solutions/psql/chekpoint.asp
But it was only $20, so what the heck !!! -
Thanks for the reply. In my case, I'd need a USB fingerprint reader, since my desktop would be the source to recover any files, if the laptop dies... Seems like Eikon readers are bundled with Upek. I wouldn't mind using one with my desktop too, since I am getting used to the convenience of this -especially after the increased accuracy of the new version (5.8).
Thanks!
-
tenderidol... You're welcome
-
. I was just concerned that others reading this thread would pay when they did not have to. Interesting that the link will only work with IE. Glad there is a solution for the problem, would be awful if we could not get data back out of the encrypted space.
-
-
All the very best... and do let us know how the Eikon reader works out for you. Might just help a lot of other people
-
-
I can only presume that all of us can keep using that link to retrieve the latest version of the software for free (and after all we did pay for it's use by buying the laptop). I hope that Upek does not close the link for some reason because then we would be forced to buy unless Dell provides a 64 bit version of their own, stripped down, 32 bit version of the software.
-
PS: I already have the 5.8 from other posts; I just wanted to see the functionality of the link. -
I cannot see the link either...
-
I am sorry to hear that neither of you could download with the link. First, did you try to open the page while using IE? Second, what exactly did you see when you tried to open the page? You should see Protector Suite QL 5.8 upgrade in big letters at the top of the page. The download link should be under that banner. Then there should be a heading saying Protector Suite QL 5.8 --Toshiba Version. Try it in IE if you have not already.
ps. sorry, tenderidol, I see from your post you tried IE, I don't know what is wrong but it would help if you posted what you actually saw on screen.

edit
stupid me cannot read
-
Hi, sorry I did not reply before now. Yes, that is the screen that you get in firefox. You are not supposed to get it in IE. There are two things I can think of. First, keep trying. I know that sounds redundent but there has to be a reason why it is not working when it supposed to and maybe it will suddenly work. The other thing is there is another link that has a version uploaded to a file sharing site; I will try to find the thread.
-
-
Actually in IE also it works sometimes and sometimes doesnt. Happened to me. So keep trying and sometime the link might appear.
-
hi there! could someone PM me with the file please?
behind my university proxy and it wont let me get anythn from rapidshare etc...
Thanks -
. Certainly the site has not moved around. There is another thread to check out with the file available through another file sharing site that might work for you instead of Rapidshare. Here is the thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=301550&highlight=upek. Again, note that I just had to go go the Upek thread and did not have to install the first link's program. Anyway, the thread might help some here.
-
hey yasdaz, thanks for that it worked!! rep added
-
Thanks so much
. I am just glad it worked for you. Just remember that the absolute latest version, for what it is worth, is on the Upek site. I really wish I knew why the link works in IE for some people and not for others.
-
hey guys, this is what i i got from IE WHEN YOU INSTALLED 5.8 from the rapidshare link in the first post of this forum.
this is the link (the same from above) -- http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/psql_winqual/psql_upgrade.asp
I downloaded it from the site and you can download from these servers so that others who can't download from rapidshare, can choose other alternatives. If you have installed the file from the first post, just upgrade it by installing this software on top to upgrade it.

*****Pls. add rep. to me after this! It takes quite some time to upload these files to multiple servers. TY!*******

It is really weird that link worked for me last week and I d/l it but then a few days later when I went to install it the zip file was corrupted. I went to d/l it again with exact same computer with no changes whatsoever and the link didn't work for me anymore. Luckily I finally found it elsewhere online though. But the link I found was posted like two weeks ago on another forum.
-
hmm....must be something that the site use a activex or java applet or something that sense if you have the uptek client software installed....maybe preferably 5.82..... as this is an upgrade site.
-
the upgrade link works only in firefox for me, strange...
-
-
just upgraded drivers and software vista business 32, going pretty well so far
-
I finally upgraded to this Protector Suite (downloaded direct from UPEK) so now have Firefox 3 support.
However, my computer has been behaving rather slowly. Sometimes Explorer seems to be chewing a lot of CPU.
Getting quite a lot of pop-ups warning I am low on memory (which I wasn't getting before and with 2GB don't think should occur with light usage).
Scans for spyware/malware haven't located anything.
I didn't suspect the Protector Suite - or at least not until I noticed that psqltray.exe is taking over 40% cpu for each of the two users currently logged on. -
This is a known issue. I had the same problem with my software with the psqltray app hogging the CPU and driving temps upwards. I disabled it until I upgraded to the latest build 5.8.2.4640. The Release Notes from the latest build mention a 'work around' for this problem. The irony of all this is that I paid UPEK just yesterday for the upgrade and guess what build I was given the link for? It was 4272 which is even OLDER than than one referenced in the OP's post. W*T*F?! You pay and still you get skewered?
-
monakh
I saw the note about them fixing a similar problem (didn't remember it as a 'workaround') - but it was the latest build which I installed.
Maybe they referred you to an older version as the problem is not yet fully resolved.
(Anyway, today I don't seem to be suffering the issue) -
For the record - I suspect the problem with Explorer hogging cpu may be related to it thinking it needs to re-index the disk.
(I wonder if disabling the file safe would be a workaround) -
I have had absolutely no issues that were stated above, have you tried the latest update?
-
I uninstalled the one that UPEK sent me a link for and installed Build 4640. No issues now though for the life of me, I can't seem to get FireFox 3 support going.
-
Has anyone else found that on some websites it doesn't pick up all the form fields?
Sometimes I get the user name field, sometimes I get the password field (I think its dependant on where the focus is).
Shame this software doesn't really work on the few websites I would want to use it on (I use browser saves for most things except banking etc) -
I was assuming that there is some way of the web site requesting that a field not be saved. So banks etc. could try and enforce security by preventing you from saving their passwords. Perhaps if there is no official HTML way to do this they could work around that by giving the field a random name so that each time you revist the page the Upek software thinks it is a different field that is being filled.
-
Any way to fix the bug that starts the laptop at 100% CPU usage?
-
There is a new UPEK TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor driver on Windows Update.
The one I currently had was shown in Device Manager as: 1.9.2.128
I updated and it became: 1.9.2.130 10/10/2008
This is the same one as listed in the Driver 2.9 update on the UPEK site.
I am hoping this resolves the issues. Previously I had often had the fingerprint device get disconnected but more recently I noticed it was leaking memory and I would eventually have to kill the service (I think the rogue process was psqltray.exe ) to get rid of Vista pop-ups telling me to close a program because the machine was low on memory. -
Thanks, I'll Try, *Wishs he still had RS account*
-
Hmm... still see the psqltray.exe process sucking up the memory - over 200MB when I killed it today.
-
There is a new(er) version of the software that was released on Jan 9.
http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/drivers/windows.asp -
Thanks for the news - that looks to be just the driver. Anyway, I'll give it a try in the hope it improves the psqltray memory grabbing issue
(not so) New Upek Fingerprint Reader Driver
