Congratz to those ordering the 3rd fastest laptop on the planet! (and also the most expensive of the 3 (Clevo starts at 2100, Alienware at 1799 and Dell at 2400) but thats your choice, I wouldn't recommend it to someone on a budget, all I gotta say is:

WELCOME TO THE SLi CLUB! Hold your head high even when walking with Clevo 900 and Alienware m9750 owners!

Can the m9750 use the new extreme intel CPUs? If not then the 1730 is faster then the m9750....at least w/ CPU intensive programs, DX9 gaming goes to m9750 but DX10 gaming goes to 1730 so IDK............

I hope they atleast went to the trouble of embossing XPS letters onto the bottom... that way the severe thermal scars on your thighs can make a trendy statement.

Clevo D900C gets both crowns ;) and the m9750 is also getting 8700M-GTs in october... So do you want an SLi laptop at 3k or one which is marginally faster cpu wise but slower gpu wise at 4k?

My toxin is the AW lol, the cheapest and thinnest/lightest. In addition out of all 3 the design is the best (its hate it or love it but of them all the AW would get more loves than the XPS imo)

Did not have to pick the BD-drive, and didn't (no need).

I got a really good price for different reasons, mostly due to the fact that I got it through work, running a lot of 3D-simulations and heavy optimization algorithms and such so I actually do need all that power for other reasons than gaming, hehe.

All of a sudden ppl come on here and their first post is "I just dropped $6k" blazay-blah.

Also, if you are spending $4-6 grand on a laptop, you need your head examined.....

Specs wise, amazing computer.. But way to thick for me.. I guess that comes as a trade off. I'd be embarrassed to carry around a laptop like that, stupid people that don't have respect or knowledge of it's power would laugh and make comments that their 1" thick crappie value model Acer notebook is better - or something along those lines.. lol

I might get one later but meh.. I don't game much anymore or at all.

It's pricey to.. but then again.. (assuming) you get a free upgrade to SLI 8800's.. that alone is probably gonna cost a nice 600+ dollars - if you were to buy the cards yourself, then again you probably are paying for it in that massive price tag.

Well i guess not everyone has a positive attitude. True that was my first post and i am just excited to finally be a part of one of the "owners lounges" in here. I actually considered not posting because of guys like sleey0, but i also remember all the great information i have read here in the past.

As for getting my head examined your probably right about that, but not because of the laptop, for me its all i use and is my life when it comes to work. As a consultant during the day i take my laptop to work with me, and yes i am well aware of the size/weight. The same thing was said about my current XPS, the big fat first gen one and its actually not a problem at all to carry around... maybe i am just in better shape than some?

Anyway while the Dell Blog says they expect to ship these in 10 days from ordering i expect the worst and am hoping it will arrive sometime in October.

By the way the Canadian site says it ships with a backpack, but i did not see that on the US site... the backpack is key for me so i am hoping that it does come with one... anyone know?

And you are not embarrased to pull out that monstrosity in the middle of a business meeting or what have you?

Unless you work for EA or Ubisoft, I couldn't seriously believe that someone would pull this thing out in some corporate meeting or in front of prospective clients, etc.

Comments like that add more suspicion (for me at least) to peoples credibility....

Backpack? Your gonna need some rolling luggage for that thing! The laptop is huge, yes, but wait till you see the power adapter. I am sure it weighs close to my 1330 system. Shoot, my M1710's power brick is big enough and it is only 130watts....

(I am just messing around so please don't take that luggage comment too seriously :))

sleey0, u said that the guy needs to get his head checked out. what about u, though? u have 2 laptops that cost somewhere between 2500-3000 dollars if not more. i know, i know, it's 2 laptops, not one, but that xps destroys both of them when it comes down to business....

    Nope. I didn't spend that much :)

Let's put it this way: the $4000 mid config M1730 cost more than twice as much as I paid for BOTH my systems combined.

Furthermore, the 1710 was a replacement for my Gen2 that got into an accident (Note to those who have kids: be very aware of where your laptop is AT ALL TIMES! :))

    Gotta love complete care.

As far as the new XPS destroying mine, that is fine. I prefer that power :portability ratio of the M1710. I mean, the 1730 has the same 9 cell as mine, but I highly doubt that the battery life will even come close to 90 minutes. In the event I need to take my computer with me, the 1730 is no where near as portable as the 1710.

The main reason I got the 1330 was 1) Extremely good deal and 2)My wife has all but claimed rights to the 1710 :(

Yes i would probably think twice about pulling that thing out in a meeting, which is not something i need to do, it comes to work with me, gets plugged in at my desk (which i leave a seperate power supply at) and it does not come into meetings... At least that is the how it goes for my contracts. I do development and analyst work, and while i am in tons of meetings none of them require me to bring a laptop. The rest of my contracts are work from home jobs. And no my jobs do not require this much power but i do game when i can find the time that is.

This was not an impulse buy, i have been waiting on this new xps all year, i guess i am a bit of a dell fanboy but i have looked at all the alternatives over the last month since seeing the pictures of this one and none of them looked any better to me... but hey thats me and i am sure others will say different. My current xps has given me 0 problems in the last 3 years and it was time for an upgrade.

    Thanks, BiG V....

Laptops are so much different than desktops in terms of years of use and price. They become obsolete pretty fast.

Also, don't believe all the "upgrade path" people are hyping. When I bought my Gen2, Dell specifically noted on their website that their would be GPU upgrades available (and I am not talking about buying the new models GPU and putting it in - that only worked for one generation, specifically the Gen2-M170). Needless to say, Dell never followed through with that.

Also, as of this post, there aren't any current plans by nvidia to release an 8800 part. Dell def would have put that in, but now they are resorting to putting 2 mediocre cards in their premium laptop to try and compensate.

To be honest, I think Dell is charging way too much for what you are getting. That was Dell's one main advantage - price.....

If this rig can run World in Conflict at max settings maybe it will be worth it in my opinion...but that 4k will definitely bring me into debt.....The X205 is a more affordable option to me being that it also has SLI but only the only bad thing is the dual 8600s GTs...

    If only for gaming ya....
But the dell lacks a HDMI, only 4 USBs vs 6 in Toshy, no fingerprint reader,
and can never match the Toshy in its speaker sound...
    and cost half less...

One other design issue that I am considering when I tot of the dell is that they place ports like firewire just above the DVD drive... Can't imagine the mess and difficulty if you have plugged in devices to these ports, and then trying to put in a game DVD onto your opened dvd drive tray, but with all the wires protruding on top of the tray from these ports.......

Integrated sound is for the most part irrelevant; Any true gamer will hook his notebook up to a killer surround system and rely on the integrated speakers for on-the-road only. And with the size and weight of the M1730 and the X205, you can be assured "on-the-road" circumstances won't be too common.

Well.. that's because integrated sound usually are not adequate...(I love to hear someone test this on the new dell..)

UNTIL you heard the toshy playing.. the in-build sound can replace med-end external speakers system any day...
    But is your choice...

If the 1730 speakers are anything like the 1710, then they are fine. I have heard Toshiba's speakers (as well as Sony's and AW's) and they are really not that much better, IMO of course :)

Well the thing is the M1710 had a visible integrated subwoofer on the bottom that added wonders to the sounf quality. From the pics I've seen of the bottom of the M1730, I can't see anything that even resembles a subwoofer. Perhaps it's hidden this time, however I doubt it even exists, because the Inspiron 9400/1705 had an integrated subwoofer, while the newer Inspiron 1720 lacks the feature. Therefore I highly doubt the new M1730 has. Quite a feature to lose :(

Well, if that is the case then Dell screwed the pooch with this one. I am trying to find a reason people woule buy this over, say, the new precision 6300.

I can't think of anything now.....

I'm sorry I don't understand; what does the Precision 6300 have to do with the M1730? M1730 is a hradcore gaming beast, and the Precision 6300 is... Well I'm not exactly sure what it is but I assume it's a business class notebook that could never compare with graphics power of the M1730.

Well, the precision uses the previous generation laptops (1710) but updates to the santa rosa specs. Also, adds the fp reader and the option to get the Core 2 Extreme.

Yeah gaming performance may not mach it pound-for-pound, BUT dollar-for-dollar you get much better bang for your buck :)

I'm still wondering why this laptop is getting ordered, The Clevo and Alienware are much cheaper and in the case of the Alienware more portable.

I always thought the 17" XPS's looked like toys...

Sleey0, i actually looked at the 6300 and similarly configed it came out to over 1,400 more than the XPS, different video card is all that i could see, what else makes it cost so much more? This is on dell.ca but i couldnt understand the huge price increase. Also the XPS had 2 hard drives to the 6300's one... (i must be missing something).

    Thanks

I wouldn't get one at full price... Barring that, the only reason to get one over the other options is the 4 year + Accidental + in-home warrenty. I know Alienware is owned by dell, but I don't think they offer the same warrenty. Some people (like myself) can't afford to be without their computer for more than a day.

If I remember reading this correctly, the two speakers on the M1730 are supposedly able to produce the lows (bass) as well as the highs. Each of the speakers has two.... Just go to this link. I'm not sure if they can replace a dedicated subwoofer; but then again, this is notebook/laptop audio we're talking about here.
