I just checked the DELL website (UK) and the prices for everything has droped by quite a margin.... also they are offering 7200RPM drives as standard where as my order was a 5400RPM....
Definatly getting it swapped if only to get a faster hard drive, now im tempted because a CPU upgrade is just £90 now! (from 2.2 to 2.4) and £50 for a HDD upgrade from 200 to 320! Crazy. At the time of purchase the blu-ray drive was £360, its now £270.
P.S - Does anyone else find it a bit stingy that DELL does not include an XPS Mouse Pad (as seen in those videos on Youtube where its on display) ?
-
Give it time. People need to test around with drivers and overcloking. The vista performance will only improve over time. Under Xp people get as much as 10,000 points on 3DMark06.
Aso it seems ot be both game and driver-sensitive what play well. By changing the drivers different games play differently. I am sure the cards will end up being very good considering the very good benchmarks. -
Most of my contact has been through the sales team, though i have spoken to and have e-mails from many departments now including warehouse many at management level.
Bit confused am i right in saying your in the US?
as i have not found an XPS UK phone number.
I have emails from several sources at dell all claiming defferent things are holding the order i take what they say now with a pinch of salt.
Does that mean if i ordered later i would have recieved it by now?
The reason for I was told that there is no Raid SSD in Europe is that there is a major shortage of the drives at least thats what 1 of the emails dell sent me said. -
I do believe the procurement has been an issue on several parts. Regarding my computer it is the wireless n. Bluray was fine. Not sure about other components that I have not ordered.
I am based in Germany. They usually connect you with sales and involve an XPS specialist only on an as needed basis. THey are very careful not to give their phone numbers, so they don't get inundated with "easy" sales requests or questions.
It is obvious produrement is delaying shippments, not production capacity. Most systems get into production and become ready instantly once the parts are there.
This is what has happened already. Dell said that the phase is now completed, so orders will take 2,5 weeks instead of 4-6.
Yes. So this correlates with my information regarding the Rai0 SSD. -
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. Other than the lcd panel I am loving this laptop. I did a lot of research, and other than the Clevo, this laptop has more bang for the $ than any other. (and even the Clevo does not have the Phsyx ^_^ )
-
So does anyone currenlty have the bone white panel and is willing to show some pics of it with the light on the lid. I been looking for pics since much more people are finally getting their m1730s but I guess your all enjoying your systems or returning them based on the recent posts.

Ahh so the 8800 rumours continue.....
I've been told by two different people at Dell - that the 8800 chip will not be offered for another 6 months - I posted one of my sources contact details in this thread. I'm also going to forward this thread link to him this morning for his comments, im also going to start calling other people today to try and get some info, i'd like some clarification on this once and for all - it's starting to p me off.
To top it off the machine I specced and ordered a week ago has come down in price in the UK by £400 this morning - lol.
I mailed the guy in charge of the sale and asked for a price drop or I will cancel.
puremind - have you specified the wireless N card with an extreme processor? just out of interest because it says on the dell site that the wireless N is not compatible with that cpu... -
I've contacted my good friend at Dell for some clarification on the 8800M. If it's going to happen he will tell me, if he knows nothing about it then it's some time off. Trust me
Yeah, the Next Gen N card is NOT compatible with the Extreme processor for those who are thinking of / have order(ed)ing it. -

As I said, it is not a rumor anymore. It is just I am not allowed to give you the name of the person.
I have ordered the Next Gen Wireless n card, which was compatible. -
I have just got on to the Dell Sales chat to make enquiries concerning the change in price and to see what Dell would do to make me keep my delayed order. This is what I got:
10:08:35 Stewart Davison Initial Question/Comment: Query on reduction in price for M1730

10:09:05 Sultana_Yousuf Thank you for contacting Dell Sales Chat.
This is Sultana, I would be your Sales Advisor for today.
Please allow me a moment to review your question.
10:11:20 Stewart Davison I have a current order xxxxxxx, this order was delayed by 3 weeks and is due for delivery on 16th Nov '07, I have now seen that the price of this order would have been reduced by approx £80 if I ordered today, I also note that a faster hardrive is now offered (with minimal reduction in storage capacity) for over £100 cheaper. I would like to know how Dell are going to convince me to continue with this order.
10:13:16 Sultana_Yousuf The offers at dell change weekly. We have new offers every Thursday which end on Wednesday Midnight 12.00
10:14:47 Stewart Davison That isn't a sufficient answer. I have a delayed order, where you have had my deposit payment for nearly a month. I ask again how are Dell going to convince me to remain as a customer and to continue with this order?
10:16:41 System Sultana_Yousuf has left this session!
10:16:41 System The session has ended!
I have tried to get another chat session started but surprise, surprise I just get left in a queue!
So much for the much vaunted Dell customer service, I think I am one email away from jacking this farce in! -
The saga continues, I managed to egt back on the chat session and seemed to be getting somewhere, then... cut off again!!

10:51:51 Arun_Raghavan Hi Stewart
10:51:56 Arun_Raghavan Welcome to Dell Sales Chat. How may i help you?
10:54:45 Stewart Davison Hi Arun, I have a current order xxxxxxx which has been delayed by three weeks, I have been in communication with customer support to record my disappointment, I have just had a chat session where I was cut off by the sales advisor and I am extremely annoyed. My query was what will Dell do to retain me as a customer? My order is delayed, it is now approx £80 cheaper if I bought it today, you have had my money for weeks, I have no system and i have also found on the website that a higher spec hardrive (with minmal reduction in storage capacity) is available for over £100 cheaper. I am now considering cancelling this order!
10:57:36 Arun_Raghavan Hi Stewart, I am with you and i truly understand your concern. Please bear with me for a couplle of minutes. This is a Sales Chat division and i am not the right person to anaswer your concern. But please, give me a moment so that i could try and check with the concerned department.
10:58:38 Stewart Davison Many thanks Arun, I am just a bit annoyed with the whole process so far. I chose Dell after many assurances that there customer support was the best in the business, so far my experience does not reflect that at all!
10:59:41 Arun_Raghavan Please bear with me Stewart.
11:01:31 Arun_Raghavan When was thhe last mail you received from Dell? Was your order an internet order or a phone order?
11:03:05 Stewart Davison The last mail I received was with customer service rep Abraham David Marian
Dell | EMEA Customer Care
Sr. Customer Support Associate,
11:05:55 Stewart Davison This email was on the 1st Nov 07, ut still didn't answer some original queries. I have responded to Abraham and am awaiting a reply. The issue of reduction in price and increase in specification I have only discovered today and only by keeping my eye on forums online. There seem to be many Dell customers who have had their orders delayed in the UK who are not happy with the price reductions when orders are being delayed. I really want someone to assist me in going through with this purchase. Taking money and then not delivering, whilst lowering prices and raising specification are just not good enough!
11:06:25 Stewart Davison Sorry it was an internet order XXXXXXXXXXXX
11:06:36 Arun_Raghavan Ok.
11:07:52 System The session has ended!
AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH -
It is 100% rumour until it's confirmed by Dell themselves via something much more substantial that you have posted above i.e. a press release - without a source that will confirm it publicly then all we have is hearsay from you and your source, which is all very exciting, and i'm grateful for any information, however sparse, but it can't be guaranteed.
So why did the site not allow the Extreme processor to be specified with the wireless N card then? It clearly said they were incompatible - all the sales and tech people I have spoken to have confirmed this also...
This is the box you got when you selected the Wireless N and the Extreme processor:
http://www.blocksoft.co.uk/m1730/wireless.JPG -
Right, I've heard back from my mate and the Product Manager. They have not decided if and when the 8800M will be availble in that laptop or when we will be able to upgrade.
Official! -
Oh dear, oh dear Dell, have they brought out the M1730 to then let their subsidiary company Alienware bring out a more powerful machine! Surely not right! I seem to be getting somewhere with my nightmarish support calls so far. Will keep updating.
-
I have a T7500 (2.2Ghz) with 4 gig Ram Vista Home Premium.
Playing Battlefield 2 (which is a pretty old game compared to Call of Duty 4 which I'll have soon and have heard the xps m1730 can play on max settings) results in the following problems:
1. After maybe an hour or so playing online multiplayer, the CPU fluctuates from 50% to 90% and eventually touches 100% which causes the screen to go black, the game to stop, and the computer to crash. (I know the CPU percentage by looking at the lil screen on the keyboard). What is the problem here? Surely the CPU should be able to handle it - so is it a vista thing? I had a Dell m1710 with XP which I exchanged, and I played the same BF2 for hours and hours with no problems, smooth game play, and very little heating.
2. Also, the anti-aliasing with 8x and 1600 by 1050 resolution causes the game to lag - whereas with anti-aliasing 4x with 1600 by 1050 resolution on the m1710 worked well. Is this because the 7950 can handle it better? But there is DUAL 8700s..I'm confused. Someone please give there scholarly opinions - lol/ -
RobHague, I have made the points you raise to Dell this morning, see my two posts on allthe hassle I had doing that simple task. My configuration is cheaper to the tune of £80, I to would prefer the 7200rpm 200GB hard drive instead of a 5400rpm 250GB, this would probably make me go for the Blu ray drive as the reduction in price, plus the cheaper but faster hard drive means the drive would only cost me another £80. Once Dell get in contact with me I will probably suggest this as a course of action, at the end of the day it means a bit more money for Dell and would make me a bit happier about the whole thing!
-
To me it looks like Dell is preparing the launch of the 8800M chips through the price cuts...The 8800M configuration is going to have about the same price as the previous chip...
No matter how strong they are trying to deny it, it is obvious now what their move will be... -
I didn't oder on the Internet. I got another wireless card from my XPS specialist.
Regarding rumors...have a look at the German XPS forum and you will understand why the 8800M launch is certain. -
I agree with puremind that this looks like a preparatory move to ready the inclusion of the 8800, the price cuts in the configuration would offset any potential increase that the 8800 would bring otherwise.
I am hoping that the discussions I am going to have with Dell and my ideas about changing the configuration could add enough time to see if any dust settles on the 8800 question. -
My source doesn't say when they will launch the 8800M, but he say IF clevo or another launches the 8800 M chip, then Dell will be on the starting list as well.
I just remember last year and the progressive launches of the 7900 GS, 7900 GT, 7900GTX, 7950GTX and 7950 GTX Blue. Dell was always first and fastest.
I think the question is not when Dell will launch the chip, but when Nvida will. Nvida will when at least Dell + 1-2 others can secure them good market coverage...
Regarding an upgrade programme, my source says this won't happen in Europe, because:
- this involves technician time, which is costly
- 8800M SLI means a cost of at least 600 EUR
If you want to upgrade, then use my suggested method (see posts on previous pages).
Laurent -
If there is no upgrade path in Europe then Dell WILL lose customers!!
There is no point in having a global business that is not global. If needs be I will get my contact to order the part in for me and swap it out via the powers that be but this isn't good enough for the other customers that do not have that option.
I've ordered over 7 machines with Dell and sold 50+ through contacts and business... if they do choose this path then the 1730 will be the last machine I ever buy from them. -
http://www.xps-forum.de/thread.php?threadid=3052&hilight=M1730+8800
You mean this thread? My German isnt that good - maybe you can show me where the bits that indicate a certain release are? -
Blinder,I have translated most of the posts and they reference a Samsung notebook that had as it specification list the 8800, the link is to an article on this website from CeBits show. I don't think it adds anything more to the rampant speculation already on the 8800 issue. I wonder if any Dell employees scanning this and other forums would like to start officially leaking any news on the 8800 and any upgrade path in the UK as the mood seems to be turning distinctly dark, even with customers who seem to be getting their M1730's and are not satisfied after forking out 2K plus on average.
-
I have sent an email to pcpro magazine watchdog about my dell 1730 experiance, refering to this post as well. If some of the other UK customers would like to drop them an email [email protected] then it may think of looking into the situation.
Good luck doove -
Thanks harry1511, I have sent an email straight off, this mornings farce with the online chat really p***ed me off! I'm still waiting for my call back, I told them I was available until 3pm this afternoon, guess it isn't going to happen.
-
Just got off the phone to someone at dell they called saying they where from the verifacation team, they just wanted to verify my address. They where unable to answer any questions, i have no idea whats going on.
This is the link to my dell status page feel free to read it for a laugh.

Hi,
Well i took another look at DELLS site and it seems (as someone else pointed out) that the Next Gen Wireless N is missing from the upgrade options (even though its on my current M1730...) but also Bluetooth is now included as standard? As well as the 7200RPM HDD. Infact i can upgrade to 320GB (RAID0) for £50! now. Where as before even a small upgrade to 7200RPM was £200.... the T7700 is now only £90 more. I was thinking of perhaps not re-ordering, but if DELL will honor the voucher I had (5% off) then im going to go for the same with the 320GB RAID and 2.4Ghz CPU (in Blue or Red backing this time).
I made a new thread earlier about my experiences with my current laptop. Since i pressed the "MediaDirect" button on my current Notebook i cannot boot into Windows anymore.... I only got the thing yesterday (well day before now) and have been fighting the seemingly poor performance. For example, copying files took an age. Installing games the same.... playing music and then using the LightFX display resulting in the music (Mp3) jumping and skipping randomly.... not to mention the fights with getting SLI to work inbetween the hard locks... I have been shaking my head on how they could let this even leave the factory bearing their logo.
This mediadirect issue is the nail in the coffin. -
Has anyone tried the 169.01 drivers? Will the 167.26 still work better?
-
They will not be an update programme, but you will be able so buy the 8800M SLI and get a Dell technician to install it - or you could of course install it yourself.
If it is like on the XPS M1710 it should not be hard at all. I dismounted my M1710 many times to remove dust. As long as you stick to the service manual from their web site, the warranty does not become void. -
No, it is this thread:
http://www.notebookjournal.de/forum/showthread.php?p=46722#post46722
Sorry for the confusion. I have been reading forums in so many languages I just got confused. At least I didn't send you to the Japanese forum (which is not very informative anyway)
The part I am referring to is:
Qestion from me:
Answer from Markus Schütz, EMEA Press Reviews Manager
Or translated:
Answer:
This is a very strong assertion, "erübrigt" has a definitive edge in German.
Of course this doesn't tell us the exact date. It only tells us Dell will be on the starting list when Nvidia make their initial launch. -
RobHague I wouldn't even hesitate, you seem to have a seriously faulty bit of kit, get a replacement asap!
-
< dies >
I just had my first experience with DELLs technical support/customer service in the UK (not that any of the telephone operators sounded like they were from the UK...) and bounced about between 'advisors'. Finally getting to someone who couldnt hear me (fault on the line?) so i just had to hang up because as comical as me and him shouting "HELLO?" it wasent getting me anywhere.
I decided to start again. This time though i just told them i wanted to return it and left all the problems out.... because each time i was transfered previously (about 6 times) i had to re-explain everything and id had enough.
Yeah so someone is collecting it on Monday and now i need to re-order. Unfortunatly my 5% discount is gone for good, since they wont let me have that off a new system like i got with the last one (by a voucher).
But at least ill get a bit more laptop for my money should i re-order. All in all it will cost me about £100 more but ill go from a single 200GB 540RPM drive to 2x160GB 7200RPM in RAID0. And from a T7500 (2.2) to a T7700 (2.4). Plus now we get bluetooth included as standard.... joy. I will have one last check around (at ROCK/Alienware) but i dont think ill find anything to match that spec for £1889. The DELL laptop is good value (for a notebook), even though people claim the M1730 is over-priced. -
RobHague, all the operatives have Indian names, therefore I guess it is a Mumbai call centre. I am still waiting for a call from customer services, not the sparkling customer service experience I was promised by Dells 'unrivalled' support, no wonder it's unrivalled no on would want to emulate it!
-
The German support ist out of Bratislava and they are all fantastic. Sorry to hear you are getting issues with the Mumbai support.
Laurent -
RobHague,
You need to be on the phone to XPS premium support mate - they are UK based engineers, and are a top bunch of blokes in my experience, you should not have to speak to the main call centre in Bangalore / Mumbai for XPS Support
The XPS UK Tech Support number is 0870 366 4180. I know how frustrating it is to have to repeat yourself and spell things over and over again - I feel for you mate.
edit: Thanks for clarifying that puremind - appreciate it, thats about as good an admission as we're going to get I think...im going to cancel on Monday and wait for the 8800M. -

Dear Peter Scott,
Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding the price of your computer where you have expressed a concern regarding price reductions.
I would like to take this opportunity to explain how Dell Direct's marketing and selling strategies are formulated in the best interest of all our customers. It is Dell's policy to consistently offer the best value for money in our systems. To that end we ensure that we pass on any cost savings we receive directly to you our customer. Our supplier prices determine to a great extent our price reductions.
Dell build every system to order, which means we do not have large stocks of ready built systems awaiting sale before we utilise new cost reductions. We operate on a "just in time" (JIT) inventory system which allows Dell Direct to instantly pass any decreases in the cost of the components directly on to you as quickly as possible. This is in contrast to most computer companies who operate through the dealer or re-seller channel. These companies have large inventories of stock which prevents them from introducing new component costs at the same pace that Dell can.
The corollary of this is that if a customer has taken delivery of a Dell computer system and there is a subsequent price reduction, we consider the order and acceptance of the goods at the original price to be final and that the contract has been fulfilled.
Please be assured of Dell's continued commitment to quality and to providing the best possible value for money to our customers. I hope the above explanation will help you appreciate Dell's position in this matter.
You will charged for the amount which prevailed at the time of purchase.
Please do not hesitate in responding to this mail directly in case of queries.I will be glad to assist you further.
Regards,
Hema

Dear Peter Scott ,
Thank you for contacting Dell online customer care.
With regards to the mail sent , I would like to bring this to your kind attention that there is a part shortage with your order and the manufacturing facility have advised us of a revised shipping date which means that the order should be delivered to you on or before 21/11/07 , however Dell will continue to endeavor to improve on this lead-time.
Please accept my sincerest apologies for the delays you are experiencing with your order. The delays you are experiencing in getting your Dell system built are not normal and are not indicative of the usual length of time necessary in manufacturing. Upon occasion, vendor related delays might hinder the normally rapid manufacturing process. Dell is unfortunately dependent upon other vendors for components used in manufacturing.
I have mailed the relevant department to get your order prioritized. While I cannot give you a specific date or any assurances, I can tell you that your order will get shipped among the earliest.
As there is a delay in getting this order delivered,we would like to make it up by following it up and we would certainly take the long wait into consideration and see what best can be done from our end once the computer is delivered.
Please be assured that we are keeping a track of this order and would keep you informed on the progress of the same until delivered.
Please do not hesitate in responding to this mail directly in case of queries.I will be glad to assist you further.
Thanks
Hema

I'm with you totally mr greenfingers, the patronising tone of the email concerning price is just insane. If Dell had fulfilled their contract to deliver the laptop as per order date you wouldn't be querying the price, however as 'in production' can mean no parts whatsover being built due to the Just in Time (JIT) principle their argument is false. Anyway if you want to cancel just respond to that email and state you are exercising your right as a consumer to not do business with Dell at the moment.
If I get a similar response to you I am just going to cancel and hold fire. Dell haven't called me back (as promised) and unless I see an email which gives me what I want I shall just say F**k you Dell, I'll spend my 2.5-3K budget elsewhere. I reckon Alienware are going to have something sweet around end of Nov anyway, if not I will just buy the M1730 when they put 8800 on it.
As I posted earlier this week if Dell hadn't screwed up then none of us in the UK would be poised to cancel. -

I agree. If your system had been received on time, you could have enjoyed it and not cared about a price decrease. After all, early adopters pay a premium price and that's a conscious choice. But in this case, Dell make you a late adopter against your will, and so they should allow you to get a refund for your lack of early adoption advantage. Anyhow, just cancel et reorder...
I have sent a similar email to my account manager. But I have the advantage of ordering on the phone, and was told then prices were not likely to move down and my order would need 2,5 weeks, this is what convinced me. So I have good chances. -
I know, I have been doing alot of digging over the past few days and it seems the UK especially is bering plagued by the problems that the US experienced on the M1330 which was a disaster for Dell. ON the issue of Just in Time (JIT) that methodology for production can only work if the suppliers also operate on a JIT principle, the whole supply chain HAS to operate to the same methodology or to be bulk suppliers that have a contingency supply to ensure JIT manufacturers never fail to meet production targets. I f suppliers dont adhere to this JIT falls apart. Looks like Dell aren't screwing down their suppliers enough and we the poor schmucks are getting stiffed!
I'm back to getting well p***ed off now, that's it Dell, you are the weakest link...goodbye!! -
Have you tried downloading the patches? I think the latest one is 1.41.
Do you have problems with the shadows randomly appearing and dissappearing?
You don't really need antialiasing but at that resolution but I will check it out next time I play it. -
I can understand the email anwers from Dell. Emails are never a good idea. You need to defend your case on the phone, with emotion in your voice and then innocently mention the work "cancel". I am any sales person would grant you your upgrade. They would at least upgrade your hard drive or give you some goodies to make feel good about the price. Emails are one thing, but when you get to the human and their emotions, people can't say no to a heart-felt plea...

Am I right in saying if the 8800m series GPUs have a 256-bit memory interface, the memory bandwidth will be close to twice as fast as the 8700m memory bandwith?

Seems like it's more of a just not in time policy
You should demand a discount or cancel until the 8800 come out. Seems like a total crock of ****. As has been said already if you had received your product on the promised date it would not have been an issue. Tell them to replace your product with the cheaper components. FFS it's still at the factory.
Just seems totally unacceptable.
Having said that I will be buying one once the 8800M's have been added. -
I have not had such a bad experience with DELL as some people on here, infact they seem to have been fair most of the time. I mean you can't argue with that 7 day return policy, its very good compared to the competition (which is, you open it, you bought it).
So i wouldnt feel right saying DELL have offered nothing good, but it seems to me that DELL advisors seem to have access to different information, which leads to some querys being helpful, and others not so much. However they should offer some protection to people purchasing notebooks that if they reduce the price before the laptop makes it to the consumer, then they get an equal discount. In this respect, it would be better for them, instead of them having people just returning laptops and reordering.
I think DELL also need to understand that when they marketed the XPS M1730 to "Gamers" rumors of upgrades, and prices drops while notebooks are being processed should be delt with better. They also need to sort of their stories, because all this different information and responses does nothing to help the situation and just causes more confusion. It's not an in-expensive product or a small commitment.
When it comes down to it though, I have not been able to find any laptops that offer better specification compared to the M1730. I wouldnt cut my nose off to spite my face, dispite any issues that i may have had, its still the best deal.
