Is Crewe in the US?
The SEC5443 has been reported to have some light leaking at the bottem (particularly on a dark background) and irregular color brightness across the screen surface, most visible on a dark, single color background.
Does your screen ehibit any of those issues (if oyu play a film in Media Player) or just have a look at the dell wallpaper, this is easily visible.

Anyone do some GPU OC'ing?
I have some trouble OC'ing the two 8700mGT's with nTune. I've got the 169.04 driver, and when I use Rivatuner or nTune and increase the clock of the memory or whatever, the screen goes haywire. I'm not sure why, but does anyone have any ideas? Its not because I increase the clocks too much. -
What are people getting for their Vista Experience Index?
Processor: 5.1
Memory: 4.8
Graphics: 5.9
Gaming Graphics: 5.6
Hard Drive: 5.3
Why is the hard drive score so high? It's only a 200GB 5400RPM drive and its actually been quite slow in practise. Also why is my Memory score so poor? My friend has a standard Core 2 Duo (desktop system) @ 2.4 and 2GB of RAM. He gets 5.4! The M1730 is based on Santa Rosa so shouldnt it be good at getting higher scores in stuff like this.....
Why is my "Beast" getting lower scores than a HP costing £499?
-
Rob, the memory is 667 and most people have 800 in their desktop machines so speed is going to play a part.
Dell normally ship very reliable RAM in their machines but it can be slow
-
Look at my location, it's in the UK.
There are no problems with my screen as far as I can see. Even in those situations.
Care to explain the extreme nitpicking?
-
Yes. I am a burnt child. I have had bad experiences with the Dell panels of the XPS M1710.
Dell used 3 different panels in the M1710:
- SEC3155 from Samsung (worst)
- SHP13C1 from Sharp (ok)
- LPL0000 from LG (best)
I had to let Dell replace my system 5 times before I was able to get a satisfactory panel.
When the M1730 came out, I asked around to see if the models had changed and they have. Those are the panels that have been reported:
- SEC5443 from Samsung (some have light leaking, pictures were posted in this forum, if you want to get an idea, others don't)
- LPL0032 (feedback was always this screen is billiant)
- Sharp SHP13D9 (no complaints)
I am happy that you seem to have no issue with your screen. So far feedback on the Samsung panels has been mixed. I find it reaussuring that Samsung seem to have finally pulled their act together. It is quite possible that some Samsung screen were screen of the previous generation (SEC3155) that were incorrectly labelled. The latest Samsung feedback seems to be better. No disgruntled users complaining about the Samsung anymore.
Anyone else received their laptop with a Samsung screen recently? -
The memory score varies with processor speed as well, not only memory speed. Some M1730 users reported scores of 5.3.
-
OMG. That's fraudulent. You talk about "cancel" and they understand "proceeding with the order" instead. They are just hoping that you will fall in love with the machine. LOL
-
I've now offically been waiting FOREVER for my XPS 1730... I ordered on release date:
Est. Ship Date: 10/19/2007
Est. Delivery Date: 10/22/2007
And my estimated delivery date, after a random cancellation and "re placing of the order," is still November 15th or something. If the 8800GT SLI comes out before, or a few days after I get my XPS, I'm going to be livid, and hassling Dell to make me happy will become my new job until I'm satisfied. They had better deliver with a non-Samsung panel, as well, or someone is gonna get chewed. -

lol i know mite as well run head first into a wall im interested to see what they have to say about taking the cash befor delivery
-
Has anyone had a quick delivery? Mine was 1 week - ordered on a Sunday and it was there Monday week later!

Dear Peter Scott,
We usually charge our customer after 7-10 working days from the day the order is placed.
This is the normal time period in having a order processed and shipped.
Unfortunately due to unexpected part shortage with your order there has been a delay on delivery date and our finance team has already taken the payment.
We apologize any inconvenience this matter may have caused.
If there are any interest charges by your bank before the delivery of your order, we will be glad to arrange for a refund if you would provide us with a copy of your bank statement showing this payment.
Regards,
Vandana
did anyone else get told they dont take your cash till you recive the goods

some ppl in aus had quick deliverys dell make them in ireland so that mite be why you got it so quick plus no extream cpu or blu-ray drive could have helped what screen do you have??
-
Yeah, the parts I wanted were quick swap out types so i guess that quickens things.
I actually live 2 min's drive from the Dell factory! The factory is Raheen, Limerick, Ireland. -Sooo maybe that helped too!
-
Oh screen type... i'm not sure....
what's the procedure to check it? -
mr greenfingers Notebook Consultant
you can check the reference in the device manager if you click on the pug & play device shud be round there somewhere
-
Yeah, mine took about 9 days
-
mr greenfingers Notebook Consultant
well just checked my order status and im in production finaly im making some progress
-
In my case this still hasn't been debitted from my credit card. I ordered on 10th October with American Express. What payment method did you use?
Your status changed on a Sunday? I am still in pre-production with revised date of November 13th. -
You can still return and reorder with the 8800GT SLI. If you want to stall you can return and reorder because of the panel, Hard Drive, color or any other option you are not satisfied with. The time frame for returning your sysem gets refreshed with each replacement and you are able to use the laptops through until the next system arrives.
-
Thanks for that, quite interesting. At least I have a good excuse if I feel the need to return
Also had that problem on my old m1710, got through 4 screens before I got one that was half decent, couldn't be bothered to go through any more after that. -
Has anyone else had some problems with the noise crackling sometimes? It doesn't happen that often but once in a while it happens to me, and wan't to know if it's something I need to get a new m1730 for.
-
Not sure if this is the same thing or related, but ive had a sort of "sound breakup" where its turned into a crackling stuttering mess. It#s happened in games a few times, but it seems to "sort itself out" after a few moments. I assumed it was a driver issue, or just related to the fact my M1730 appears to be a turky in general
-
Woohoo, they shipped mine!
Just took them 4 weeks to package it! -
Perhaps they had a bubblewrap shortage?
-

lol nice one

dont know if it was a sunday havent checked in a while and I used credit card to pay for it if it gets delayed agian ill want my cash back till its on my doorstep
-
mr greenfingers Notebook Consultant
you dont seam to be having much luck with it mate is it still blue screening on you or have you sorted that out and are they replacing it for you? -
Just added a 2 gig stick to my 1730 making it a total of 3 gigs and found that it sped up my performance considerably. During startup my hard drive would run for a while loading up all of my resources and now it I can start my programs as soon as I see the desktop. Also, my games run much smoother. Vista is a resource hog, so I recommend to have at least 3 gigs in this machine.
-
mr greenfingers Notebook Consultant
yea im planing to get a replacement with the 4gb option -
mr greenfingers, bit confused now, are you cancelling your order or are you continuing now it's in production?
I am having to cancel my order tomorrow as it is th eonly way I can get the 7200rpm hard drive, the blu ray drive and make all the savings. This was after protracted discussions on the phone and chat with sales who just kept saying this is the procedure. As I am cancelling now I have to wait up to 30 days for my money, so in total Dell will have been earning intrest for about 2 months whilst I get squat. So much for excellent customer service! Now that I am cancelling I am probably going to wait until after Xmas and see what happens with the 8800's. This is a real shame as I was gagging for this laptop and all the delays runarounds etc with sales and customer service have just put the kibosh on the whol ething. When the dust clears I will most likely come back and purchase a Dell but at the moment no way.
-
Lol, possibly. Can't wait to get my hands on it now.
Due tm hopefully.
-
mr greenfingers Notebook Consultant
I’m waiting till I get it then I’m getting it replaced and I’m going to see what kind of cash back or upgrades I can get for the way I have been treated
plus iv been waiting for so long I at least want a play on it before I cancel or replace I want to see if they will upgrade the processor for the extreme and the ram up to 4gb if I can get this cheap enough dell mite just keep me as a customer
my only worry cancelling now is that all the s**t I went through will count for nothing when I re order
-
It's a shame so many people have been having trouble because I've been living with it for the weekend and it's an awesome machine. The only thing I might do is partition off a section of drive and make it dual boot with XP like my desktop setup. The backpack is awesome too!
-
I recieved an e-mail from customer complaints after i canceled ensuring me i would have my money back in 3-4 working days so you should not have a problem. Saying that i will let you know in 4 days time lol. -
Hey all,
Most of reviews/feedback i have read about this machine seems positve. I was wondering however if there is any known difference between Dell canada and Dell UK. I am from Canada and studying in the Uk,i was going to order a machine now while in the UK, but wanted to know if there are any known issues, ie quality, features etc. that are UK specific. thanks for your help.
MC -
The reason I'm cancelling is purely down to the fact that I don't want to risk not getting the chance to change the config of my machine. The price cut and spec upgrade is a bit much to swallow after the thing has only been out a month, for a few quid more I can get a much better machine. The irony is I still want the M1730, I would still do business with Dell if only they would let me! Crazy, crazy! You never know Alienware might surprise us on the 19th, however I would still probably expect Dell to have the superior machine.
-
Yeah ive had my M1730 over the weekend. Had a few troubles with it, and i was sending it back. Still am, but im still planning a re-order with some upgrades. 2.2 > 2.4 and the 320GB RAID0.
I asked AW when they were going to update the UK site, with the 8700's like they have with the US/Canada. They said they didnt get notice in advance of such changes so had no idea...
Anyway right now if i go to DELL i can spec the following M1730 for £1,889.00....
On alienware to get close to that its £2,296.34! The only PLUS being the 7950's and their holy 256Bit Memory Bus, although on the US site the 8700 SLI costs more... but you also lose the Ageia PhysX... so i cant see the value in AW.
-
mr greenfingers Notebook Consultant
alienware will be bringing a new laptop out so we will have to see if it has the Ageia PhysX card in it i know it will be overclockable but price wise dell will always win alienware usualy win on looks and style you can never rule them out
-
Mate this is not the right way. It is better to wait for delivery of your original order and then get make a new order because:
1- you can keep the system until the new one arrives
2- their finance department can keep the money for your new order and you only pay the difference!
3- in some cases their sales will just upgrade you without additional cost if it fits within their new price structure. -
Your better off buying your own RAM, it's cheaper and you can probably get better RAM that way and keep the 2gb that normally comes with it.
Come on man, they give you a FREE T-SHIRT, now thats value lol -
There is no risk...you just ask Dell for a refund. Since you make a fresh new order, of course you can get any upgrade you need. If your upgrade does not add too much too the price, because of the price decrease they might even decide that you don't have to pay anything extra.
-
Not "many people"... just a few "special needs" customers. I used to work helpdesk and would slash my wrists to avoid 2% of users who took up 95% of my time.
-
mr greenfingers Notebook Consultant
what ram shud i get whats the best
-
I don't know but I'm sure someone else could recommend you some good RAM
-
http://www.newegg.com/
Don't they have good ram? -
mr greenfingers Notebook Consultant
im sure they do but if its cheaper to put your own in i may be able to get the best ram for the same money or near to it
-
My 1730 has Hyundai RAM in it, well that's what cpu-z says, i'm sure Dell gives you half decent RAM but you can likely do much better elsewhere, with good brand names.
I've been looking at this OCZ 2048MB PC2-6400 DDR2 SODIMM RAM
for $174.30 Australian for one 2gb stick -
You need RAM that has been tested on the Dell, so you need Either Dell or Kingston.
Not any RAM will do. I know it because I tried to buy 2x2GB DDRAM from a cheaper brand and my system was noticably slower, and got warm with all sorts of issues while playing video or games.
I had to sell them on eBay and buy the Dell modules instead. If you buy non Dell, just may sure you buy Kingston optimized for Dell XPS M1710 (don't pick the Kingston Value RAM).
