What you describe is typical for Samsung screens when viewed off angle. Leebadlock had similar problems on his M1730 and this is how I know Samsung panels to be on the M1710.

Dell won't consider this a defect (unless you manage to make some real good pictures). But then the panels that Tech Support use to replace bad panels are usually Samsung... The best thing to do is ask for a full system replacement in the hope that you will get an LG screen or a Sharp (or a better Samsung, some didn't have complaintd with the 5443).

By getting a replacement you are also refreshing your time frame for returning your system perhaps by the time you get your replacement the 8800M chip will be out (if that's of interest to you).

You will be able to keep your system until the replacement arrives.

There are no other screens available at this point in time in Australia beside the Samsung. My screen is a Samsung and it looks perfectly fine apart from the light leakage from the bottom, I have no grainyness or blotchyness and I hope our replacement screens won't either. The samsung screen in the 1730 is a different model to the one in the 1710

And if it's not on the same type of single card, I wonder if you could plug the 2nd one into the spot they're currently using for the PhysX card?

I'd take the better graphics over the PhysX any day.

Does anyone else with the 1730 have a sim card slot under the battery, near the service tag sticker? My device manager doesn't seem to recognise anything though

Sorry, I didn't buy the Blu-ray drive... the description on Dell's website does lead me to believe that is is only a Blur-ray optical drive and not a burner!

Blu-ray Disc DVD+/-RW Optical Drive including software
"Store video’s, images or archive up to 4.7GB of data on this 16x speed drive"

I would have thought it would have said up to 25GB or 50GB if it was a Blu-ray burner.

    It's nearly time mate! :)

I just installed everything apart from QuickStart and the webcam software. Removed all internet provider stuff, Works, Virus-scan, Dell help and anything else that doesn't come with a windows install.

The 3G thing wasnt an option when I ordered but the slot is a proper one and it springs the card in and out. Probably just on all the chassis like you said

Did you uninstall the old drivers first? I had problems when I just installed them over the old drivers. Try that and they should work much better

hello chaps, im new to the site and had a nasty experience with my old m1710 bsod errors etc etc , 2 graphic cards and 1 mobo later and they gave me the nod yesterday for a full refund. Just ordered a m1730 last night and for an extra £170 i have got a

    t7700 over my old t7400
    320gb over my old 60gb
    dual 8700 over my single 7900gtx 512

    so im very pleased !

Just a question , how much money did u guys end up paying for ur m1730 , i never know if i got a good deal with the rep i have spoken to , they always go the their manager and get the "BEST" deal they can but i always wonder if i could have gotten a better deal if i had held out longer, the important parts of my spec are

    T7700 2.4ghz
    2gb ram
    320 gb raid0
    dual 8700gt sli

for £1800, the website price was £2145 , the thing is having read this thread , im tempted to now hold out for the release of the 8800. Or call up and cancel my order stating this for the reason, and when the rep tries to convince me otherwise then ask for an upgrade to the 4gb RAM option to ease my concern!

One last thing , when they pick up my m1710 i got given a free XPS backpack to help secure my order, do u think i should send this back ? Or keep quiet about it ?

Thanks for reading and gotta nice , very nice informative thread !

I tried to get some sort of money off when i returned my order, because they couldnt/wouldnt re-take my new order at the same time and just add the difference in price (when i ordered the first time there was a voucher offer for 5% off you see that ended on the 31st of October) - they wanted me to reorder seperatly.

No joy, i tried twice with different sales advisors but couldnt get them to offer anything at all. I actually tried bargaining with Alienware (since their current prices are high and DELL offer much better value) but they wouldnt even throw in a free MUG or something....

Yeah, well still re-ordered anyway. Not going to cut my nose off to spite my face, the XPS M1730 is still the best 'bang for buck' in the UK. You get a lot of extras for the same money, not only a much better standard config than alienwares m9750. Even specing up the AW to be near the £1800 XPS, it still missing things like the AGEIA PPU, which while not essential.. is definatly a plus.

I am still interested in the 8800M but there isnt enough solid information around, and i need my laptop as soon as possible. My new system is slated to be delivered on the 23rd of November anyway. So thats quite a few days after the 8800's "projected" release date.

Some other people got good discounts (5 to 20%, see previous posts). You seem to have a tenacious accout manager.

In my case I found a really good offer on ebay Germany and told my account manager about it. This helped.

Check ebay UK. Do you get any better price?

    http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=m1730

The cap running the offers on ebay Germany had a good contact at Dell because of the amount of orders he processes. Maybe some UK "shops" will also have similar advantages.

In France and Germany, there are also forums that do grouped orders with discount up to 22%. People were generally happy with the process.

Found this review. Not sure if anyone else has seen it yet but i thought it was worth posting. Hopefully someone else will do a simular review to TomsHardware only focus more on benchmarks and games. Even if you already own it, it would be nice to know some numbers for potential game purchases ~ If you know what performance to expect that helps you choose.

Well I got x64 working but I'm suffering exactly the same problems as my 32 bit install even though it seemed to be fine to begin with.

Am currently running memtest to see if it's the ram, already run the dell diag twice over and nothing.

Going to request a new battery as mine has gone to 6% wear in under a week , only 3 times have I used it off the battery so far. So it's defiantly faulty.

How long has it been taking Dell recently to ship 1730's from order date to dispatch date? I know they caught up on the demand for M1330's in the last month or so and are shipping them within 3 days, but the 1730 is also a month or two newer in terms of release date.

Anyone that has purchased a system in the last few weeks, please reply, your information would be of great assistance!

lol looks like I’m not the only one dell hate at least I’m only hated by dell with a personality like yours I’m surprised your still alive :D

I know technology changes every month but the real reason I wanted to change my order in the first place was because at the time I ordered I could not afford the extreme cpu I had a win on the fruit machine of £500 witch you would know if you bothered to read previous posts

plus I made my order way back on the 3rd of oct and since then have saved up enough to get the top spec 1730

saving money on an order I already had to change makes perfect sense to me but then again I don’t just come on hear to start an argument :realmad:

Hey guys. Well, after being pretty satisfied with my 1730, I've come to a decision to return it. Game performance wise it's about what I expected, but stability in windows vista has been killing my experience. First off, I have been getting daily hard drive cycles in the os. After the initial boot, the HD will cycle for at least 3-5 minutes after it has loaded all of my startup files. When I do have issues with a program not loading, ctrl-alt-del will lead to a system freeze where the only solution will be to reboot. Lastly, the sli performance has been subpar. I have a 2.4 quad core desktop with a ati 1900xt and it runs in some case much smoother than this laptop.

I don't doubt the hardware is there, but integration seems a bit off. The performance for a laptop this pricey should be on par with 2 year old desktop and I find it lacking in some of the most basic tasks. Maybe it's a memory issue, but I doubt that since this is my 2nd notebook replacement and have had the same issues. Gaming wise, I was able to get significant performance boosts with the beta drivers, but as a whole my experience has not been a good one. Hopefully dell's next gaming notebook will have all of it's kinks worked out.

    Ordered 10/06/2007
    esd 10/29/2007
    revised esd 11/05/2007
    2nd revised esd 12/03/2007
Order automatically cancelled by Dell 11/05/2007
    Re-ordered 11/06/2007
    esd 11/21/2007

Will it make it this time? Who knows! Lost the 10% discount, but still paid less than the 1st machine after price drop and $200 gift card. Sales person said that the builds were down to 6-8 days. Good Luck!

    Order received: 19 Oct 07
    Build complete: 28 Oct 07
    Delivered: 2 Nov 07

    T7700, 4Gb, 2x250 Gb, Bluetooth, Wireless-N

It was a delay (they promised to deliver on 29 Oct). My system is good, very stable, no problem at all. I've tested it on preinstalled Vista Home Premium and then reformatted all hard disks and installed Vista x64 Home Premium and XP Pro (32 bit).

Some bad things: light bleeding is awful. I've got a Samsung :( It's not a critical to me, though. No drivers from dell for 8700 GT (sli or not) for Vista x64.

Dell doesn't provide an installation disk for Vista x64 if you buy a Home Premium version and I can't pass activation with a serial key from the bottom of my notebook. There is a way to save activation information from a standard dell vista installation and restore it on a fresh installed Vista x64.

But I didn't check it because I'm going to replace my notebook anyway.

I have a dead pixel in the middle of the screen, connection with powercord not very stable: even slightlest movement can break it. Plus light bleeding and you've got a full picture.

And don't forget about future release of 8800M.

3NZ0, what video card drivers did you use for x64?

Were there any issues finding drivers for other devices?

He came to my house and fixed it, I wasn't home to check it though and when I got back, the LCD is fine, no dead pixels, I turned on the left speaker light in the BIOS and was expecting it to turn on but didn't, he changed both of the speakers, so I hope I got another faulty speaker because I dont want to send the whole laptop to Dell now that I have finished my exams, its game time!!!
