which is a better setup....for the 1730...a 2.4ghz with 2gb of memory....or a 2.2ghz with 4gb of memory? both having 120gb hard drive 7200rpm.....tryin to get a system aroudn 3300 which is best for gaming and speed

Sounds somewhat promising.
2.4Ghz + 2GB would be better. CPU > RAM. 2GB is enough, and 4GB is overkill for all but the most demanding applications (CAD ect). -
Hi Pure , sorry can you help me out with the translation !
-
I translated it in my original message already...I only provided the link because someone didn't trust my source...
-
I trusted it.
I just wanted to see where it was posted, for future reference, and to look again for other future information.
Side Note: I have been checking around and DELL seem to contradict themselves on this whole "M730 upgrade path".
For instance on Direct2Dell.com it says...
Then you go to the DELL support forums and see something like this....
I know there are other issues with the M1730 (software and drivers) but the nail in its coffin is going to be DELL and their lack of support for all those concerned M1730 owners out there. Not to mention any "potential" customers, due to the nature and cost of this notebook they need to support their current customers a little better.
I mean we just want a simple answer to a simple question. Are DELL going to offer an upgrade path to the 8800 which is confirmed to be announced shortly and appear on new Alienware Notebooks. This is not unreasonable, since their information on this notebook from the start has mentioned it. -
The support guy is answering from a technical support perspective. What he is indeed saying is that once your order has shipped, you get assigned a service number and your config log is attached to it, so if they were to replace parts in your system, they could only replace it with the same part. This is what is happening with tech support, they only gant you same part replacements...
This doesn't mean sales won't offer you a replacement system with upgraded card, or that Dell overall will not offer the 8800M card.
But I think the 8800 will come out before christmas anyway. Last year the 7950 GTX was launched by Dell in November...
But I think support guys are not the first ones to get informed about new launches anyways. Sales or PR people are more in the know. -
That was it!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! I'm now fully Vista Ultimate 64.Elganja said: ↑Did you install the Rioch drivers as well? Now I just have to hope I don't have any software compatibility issues. -
Just to sum up the current situation on the 8800M chip.
- Alienware briefly offered an 8800M-SLI based 17" system on their web page yesterday, before the content was pulled out again, no doubt a preparation for the launch on next Monday
- Clevo are due to offer the 8800M chip around mid of December
Several people reported being able to configure a 17" laptop with 8800M SLI and as well as 15" laptop with single 8800M on the Alienware web site before the content was pulled off again.
Check the thread below:
http://www.notebookforums.com/thread207563-4.html
With both Clevo and Alienware now set to launch the 8800M there is little doubt left that Dell will make an announcement very soon.I saw the Alienware site before it was pulled and a 17" with SLI 8800's, 3GB Ram, Blu-Ray and a single 200GB 7200rpm drive was about $4500. A little over 5K after tax and shipping.
I would expect DELL to offer the SLI 8800M in the 1730, it has the cooling solution and extra power in the brick already. I believe the 8800M is based on the 8800GT card. It will run at a lower clock rate, but the 96 steam processors, 256-bit memory bus and new architecture is a huge improvement over the 8700.Click to expand...
I am personally expecting Dell to launch the 8800M SLI before 10th December. They may not be quite ready to take orders, but they don't want to miss the Christmas business. As we have already seen, Dell don't hesitate to sell systems for which they haven't yet taken delivery of all the parts...Even if their 8800 SLI systems start shipping in February, Dell will want to take orders before Christmas...
Also if Alienware has the technology, so has Dell (there was some speculation around testing issues).
There is now aggravated evidence that Dell is poised to launch the 8800M with the M1730... -

Subject: RE: Dell Order Has Been Confirmed for Dell Purchase ID: 200009543XXXX
Julie,
I have another question, regarding upgrading the graphics processor on the XPS 1730. Rumor has it a new graphics processor is going to be available for the 1730 around mid December or early January. What would the process be to have this upgraded? I know the XPS 1730 is supposed to be “upgradable” to next generation graphics processors.
Any answers on this would be appreciated.

Hi David,
I wasn't sure about the graphics processor. Contacted technical support. They said that:
- We cannot upgrade processor after the computer is built.
- They have not heard that a graphics processor will be available on the XPS 1730. We do not get advance notification on new products releases at our level. I am sorry that we can't be of more help on this.
Thanks,
Julie

Julie,
Straight from this... http://www.dell.com/content/topics/...e/en/2007/2007_09_27_nyc_000?c=us&l=en&s=corp
“Looking ahead, Dell engineered the XPS M1730 chassis to handle the thermal and power requirements of the most powerful next-generation graphics technology. Dell also will offer a graphics upgrade program when next-generation graphics processor technology is available.”
Either Dell lied in the press release or the tech is uninformed. Can I get a second opinion please?

Subject: XPS 1730 Graphics Upgrade Program
David,
The product manager for XPS notebook line confirmed that what you saw on the web is correct. In fact, he is working on the process now.
Following is a recap of his response to your inquiry:
"Yes, it is upgradable. The graphics upgrade program is expected to be available in January. The upgrade will require a service call. It is not customer upgradeable in the field. The price of the upgrade will have the service price included. We will be emailing the offer to all customers who purchased the system."
Please let me know if you have not received more information by end of January.
I hope that this answered your questions. If not, please let me know and we'll go back to the people who has the answers.
Thanks!
Have a great day!
Julie
There you go folks... -
Great, I wonder how much the Price of the upgrade will be? 150$ 300$?
My m1730 is in the Boxing Stage right now so should be here tommorow I hope!
I'll Post with the screen type and a review of my general use when it arrives. And Ill throw in a picture of the lappy after i Custom Skin it with a Gelaskin. -
Thanks for that info sidthafish! it definitely reinforces my hope that those of us on the early uptake will have something to look forward to in the new year.
You keep your head down out there fella! -
The upgrade had been confirmed for the US already. For Europe there is an official statement from Markus Schütz that a dell upgrade will not be offered (again on the German forum).blinder said: ↑Thanks for that info sidthafish! it definitely reinforces my hope that those of us on the early uptake will have something to look forward to in the new year.

I think the tech support he talked to was US-based? Can you confirm?
But it definitely reinforces the fact that Dell are going to take orders for 8800M systems before Christmas. I don't see the January upgrade being offered before the 8800M gets launched. -
Yes, it was US based. I can't comment in European based services although I don't think there is a difference in core components. In the past upgrades for XP systems happened in the US but not in Europe. Unfortunately. The current statement from Dell EMEA have been that there will be no upgrade for Europe, so I would be interested in hearing otherwise.sidthafish said: ↑Yes, it was US based. Clevo announced something around 200 EUR. so USD 200-300 is probably a good estimate.ivealwaysgotmail said: ↑Great, I wonder how much the Price of the upgrade will be? 150$ 300$?

I had a talk with manager,Customer care(Dell India). The guy was appointed by the director himself(Dell India) following a complaint mail which I had sent to them regarding the uncertainty in the launch date of XPS M1730 in India(hasnt launched yet in India~been waitin for it all these days). The manager confirmed that XPS "M1730i" (read the 'i' after 1730) is going to launch in India sometime in the next year, probably January.

Geez, sounds like you european guys are getting hosed all the way around. Bad screens, bad shipping wait times and no upgrade path
I will ask my sales rep if she can find that out. I don't know what kind of luck she will have being US based but never hurts to try. -
I've got this strange problem now that is occurring with the LEDs in the speakers, after they were replaced twice and the motherboard was replaced. Now the left speaker shows different colours to the right speaker and dowsnt show red, but sometimes it works fine, as it is now, but it wasn't working about 10 minutes ago. Anyone got any ideas? when I set the colours in the BIOS it works... sometimes, others it doesn't, maybe speakers are faulty this time?

Europe does get LG screens as well, it is Australia that gets only Samsung screens. We only have the Intel wireless n related delays in Europe.
They also said it is unlikely we will get the Raid0 SDD over here because of offer scarcity for SSD drives... -
Its pretty disgusting if they will offer the upgrade to US owners and not those of us in the EU , unless theres some kind of difference in the construction of the laptops and some incompability?? Although it unlikely that there should really be a problem.
Is definately something i would complain about, when i ordered the m1730 i did so with this is mind

Iam putting forward some specualtions on the basis of thought and the info that is presently available (about the XPS M1730 and 8800M GTX).I woulf love if people will put their opinions on the same:
1.Firstly,I would like to advice those who are planning to buy M1730(pls do read my previous quote regarding XPS M1730i-hopeful to come by december end/jan start) that;
DO WAIT TILL Christmas!(whichever among alienware, clevo, dell, etc. offers the best bang ,Grab IT!)-8800M GTX will give the best bang for money(consider it analogous to 7900 last year)
2.I suppose M1730's base price wud come at sub 2.5K esp. if Alienware is offering dual 8800M GTX for base price of 2.2K(mind u they are 512MBs each~Nvidia is shipping the 512MB s first,256s will follow)
3.I wud like to re-empasize that 8800M GTX is the 'true' GPU for the "enthusiast" gamer and not 8700M GT(as all the marketing hype by Nvidia and Dell). It's going to be the mobile equivalent of 8800 GT(desktop) in terms of price(sumwhere around 250US$),performance(GT made da GTS>X obsolete by givin more power in single&Dual configs respectively,at lesser price!)and architecture(G92,for both ov dem)!
As,Anandtech rightly says:"8800 GT(desktop) is the best offering Nvidia has ever made,in terms of power and price,"
Wot i mean is 8800M GTX's gonna follow suite.(Nvidia already posted 1bn+ US$ revenue in last quarter, with mobile GPU increasing by more than 130% and they would like to make the loot even bigger, this Christmas{quite a fightback! by Nvidia, following investors' fear about it losing regarding potential fusion cpu+gpu by amd& intel in 1-2 years})
4.As for those who have already placed orders and facing delays..relax dudes,(the more they delay, the more u benefit),as you can ship back your beasts when they come, quoting faults in screen,Vista OS,Drives making noise or whatsoever you can figure out(dis forum already has loads ov dem!)so that you can probably get the GPU upgrade for free?!!?!?!?
Bit of coaxing the rep with a dash of attitude would get you the trick done, and you could laugh ur way with 8800M GTX!
5.Lastly those of you who have already bought ur M1730,it's still a beast(dell providing their updated drivers in weeks-they vil definitely do it before they provide 'The upgrade Path').As for those of who, who feel lost, you could still have 8800M with 200-300 US$.{quite a few people where askin ealier, about how and where to upgrade the GPU wen the 8800 cums}.Well,I think Dell upgrade path is the best,it wud b safest(dell doesbt have MXM3),wont void ur warranty(I suppose!?!)and price difference wont be much(50US $ probably)compared to dat frm other channel(provided u r successful!),as dell wud b the largest buyer of 8800M gpus(considerin alienware also) -
You guys in Europe better start complaining to Dell when they begin offering the upgrade, assuming they don't offer it in Europe, I may be in the same boat as you guys if they don't offer it in Australia, I don't mind paying for the upgrade but if they don't offer it, it is ridiculous because the system only came out about two months ago and we all paid top dollar for it and it has the XPS label on it and Dell should be looking after ALL customers who bought it or any other computer they sell.Primeh said: ↑Its pretty disgusting if they will offer the upgrade to US owners and not those of us in the EU , unless theres some kind of difference in the construction of the laptops and some incompability?? Anyway, you guys who like fiddling with the secondary LCD should download the LCD software for the logitech g15 from the logitech website, it is much better than the software dell gives you and it works nicely with the Dell LCD, well it does for me at least. Btw will people stop saying the 8700 isnt an enthusiast GPU. In the name of all thats holy... stop beating a dead horse. It's like some sort of 'cool' bandwaggon to jump on. "OMG TEH 8700 PHAIL!". The 8700 is still a speedy card, and I think there is too much FUD about it that smeer over the fact that its got a lot of potential, and poor driver support at the moment (especially SLI).
I am awaiting the results of those emails, im also going to try contacting DELL UK and refering them to the links posted in here about DELLs announcement/marketing about the GPU and also what someone from the US said. Hopefully i can get something simular from them.
If DELL are going to screw over people in the UK then im returning my M1730. If they are doing what they are doing in the US, then thats great and ill keep it. I have 7 days to decide so hopefully some news confirming or unconfirming this will surface. -

A head's up for anyone thinking of ordering in Australia - I ordered on 9 Nov and it's arrived in Aust today with a call indicating expected delivery of 8am to 12am on 19 Nov. That makes it a 6 working day order (excluding the morning of delivery). Not bad! I wish I had ordered earlier in the week and avoided the two weekends
.he
I think the reason for the quick fulfillment is do to the absence of the Extreme processor, wireless N, and SSD in my specs (see sig). From what I've read these three items seem to hold up orders.
This is, of course, if they are actually being truthful about the order status. -
^ How much did the price for your final configuration come to?
-
wow looks like the UK dells are shipping really fast now , the last order i made ( have cancelled and reordered about 3 now lol ) was on the 12th Nov and i just checked its update and its shipping date was yesterday the 14th , so i should have it today or tomorrow...omg time to freak out !

Mine moved to Production Today - Ordered on the 4th - Into Production on the 15th - So maybe I will get it by the Estimated Delivery Date of 22nd.
However I think Dell Order Tracking System seems a little confused. As yesterday it said 'In Pre-Production as of 05/11/07 - Today is says "In Production as of 05/11/07"
With regards to the 8800M Upgrade Package - Dell are projecting themselves as a global supplier and to offer an upgrade route in only the US does not seem to make sense. If this is the case - We as Non-US based M1730 owners - Need to take some class action against Dell. Petitions, Watch Dogs, Trading Standards, there are lots of ways to ensure that Dell get enough 'Negative' attention that they decide to change their ways.

A$3700 I think... including 2 year complete care. Please don't tell me if they've just dropped the price I don't want to be tempted to re-order with delivery so close...dna2008 said: ↑^ How much did the price for your final configuration come to?Click to expand...

Im not sure how to turn on the SLI on the game

My configs are in my signature - I got mine for $3470 (I have Vista Home Premium - so that's $130 less). My hard disks are at 5400RPM each however.JerryAtrick said: ↑A$3700 I think... including 2 year complete care. Btw, for $3700 on the dell site at the moment, you can get 2 x 200Gig (7200rpm) hard drives; and if you take 2 x 320 (5400rpm) (that's massive!) hard drives, it will actually cost you $80 less. -
I VERY much agree about the8800m's!!! Dell will be taking my calls 24/7, because they assured everyone that an upgrade path would be available!FragHaggis said: ↑Yeah Dell Seem to have stepped it up.

Technically if in Europe they provide on site repairs etc. They have no real reason to not offer the upgrade to them or any other country outside of the US, we all paid for the same system and we should all get treated the same, unless Dell would like us all to stop buying off them and move onto a competitor (not alienware) then they should get their act together and provide a standardised service worldwide
