I just got my XPS today with a SEC display...

It was loading windows and my dad was like, is the light from the keyboard leaking into the bottom of the screen XDDD!!

Nice, so tomorrow i will test how cool is to call a tech to replace the screen.

I gotta tell ya from reading the majority of posts here and the fact that my 1730 has been delayed for 4th time (past one month since order) and the fact that I can not get a honest straight forward answer of why it keeps getting delayed, My decision to cancel this order is starting to become clear. Seems like lots of problems. My last Dell was a XPS Gen 2 and the vid card recently crapped out on me.

    Ordered XPS 1730
    Ordered 11/2/07
    Still delayed.

It took a while to get my software and files from one computer to another. I see some people are successful with installing 169.12 Drivers. Are you having many problems?

One more thing... THIS IS A MONSTER OF A MACHINE. Just unbelievable.

Wow, I can not get any driver to work other than version 156.69. After removing all of the NVIDIA drivers and using Driver Cleaner Pro. I tried to install version 167.45 from Dells website. This was only to test and it failed. When I ran the setup program I got a message saying there was no hardware in my system to match this and it exited. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Should I have used the Select Miltiple Cleaners option in DCPro?

You have to use the drivers from laptop2go and their accompanying ini file. Unfortunately their website has been down for a while now.

Ok, I did finally get 167.45 to install. What I did was try the setup.exe install and it failed. Then from Device Manager, right click, Update Driver Software, Browse My Computer for Driver Software, Let me pick from a list of device drivers. I noticed the 167.45 was not recommended by Microsoft. Well I usually do not listen to Microsoft so I installed them anyway. Rebooted, and went to enable SLI mode. Funny thing is when it said it needed to shutdown some programs before it could enable SLI mode it wanted to put Windows to sleep a few times. I guess windows was bored. I chose cancel on the sleep dialogs, then SLI was enabled.

I ran 3Dmark06 with the default settings, Areo Glass on,

    Version 1.1.0
    Width 1280
    Height 1024

    3DMark Score - 8431 3DMarks
    SM2.0 Score - 3863
    HDR/SM3.0 Score - 3316
    CPU Score - 2511

    to

    3DMark Score - 8941 3DMarks
    SM2.0 Score - 4024
    HDR/SM3.0 Score - 3684
    CPU Score - 2540

It is not great but it is a start.

Are you sure it is updating? I noticed before some of the setup programs looked as though they updated, asked me to restart and when I looked in the Nvidia Control panel I still had the same drivers. It was frustrating to say the least.

Hi can anyone tell me how much is the cheapest configuration for the M1730.

In singapore it's selling for USD$2699 for the cheapest configuration.

    Same I think.

Yeah, installed steam and play CS source last night, did the video stress test, did avg 175fps on full res, everything turned on. Maybe my expectations are low. I have a 3 LCD's @ home, and this as good, if not better, than all of the others.

Also, if you buy a product, and it arrives, and works. Your not going to find a forum and tell anyone about it. There are thousands of m1730 owners out there that are really pleased with their purchase. You'll just never hear from them.

If you going to fuss about with beta drivers that haven't been rigorously tested, just to squeeze and few fps, then expect problems.

They have definately updated, but before I was getting over 8000 no matter what drivers I used, even the stock Dell ones that came with it. I have formatted and installed the Notebook forums 169.09 tweaked drivers and still only getting around 7600 and the counter strike source stress test has dropped from over 200fps to 158fps. I have installed all of the windows updates and the ones for direct x etc but still no luck, I suspect it is a problem with my motherboard because this only began after it was replaced

Just ordered one of these bad boys here in Australia.

    T7700 2.4 ghz
    2 gig ram
    2 x 160gig HD 7400rpm

Not the greatest spec, but should do for me. I'll see how it performs, if its not upto my standards I'll ask for a refund. But it should do!

Also got 8% discount due to be in the defence force out here. Didn't know they did one! Lucky I called to ask about how long they were expecting the delivery to be on these. The guy told me around 8 days, was about to hang up, then quickly asked. Good job I did.

Having it delivered to Sydney as Im going on leave this Christmas and will be staying in Sydney.

By chance, is there like a wiki up for this machine? All the drivers/issues/performance tweeks people have been talking about on this thread would be great if they were compiled into one easy to access article. Just hit me then, there's like 200 pages, with great info scattered throughout... The thought of going back over all the pages is daunting to say the least!!

Anyway, thanks for all the great info, and here's to me hopefully enjoying my new toy.

I see a new WoW themed 1730 is on it's way on the 11th December. The interesting thing is the spec says DX10 SLi graphics cards and not SLi 8700GT. I wonder if this is how they will break the 8800 to the world?

I'm really just speculating to be honest and I'm not into WoW so it doesn't really affect me ;)

    Nice idea though!

    I'd say they're hiding the shame of 8700M's @ $4500!
But if it was 8800M's I might be getting into WoW very quickly! Whatever WoW is :p (All I know about it is from a southpark episode! http://www.southparkzone.com/episodes/1008/Make-Love-Not-Warcraft.html )

Is anyone using the 800Mhz RAM instead of the default 667Mhz,

and if so does it make much of a difference?

    Just curious as I'll probably upgrade from standard 667Mhz 2Gb to 800Mhz 4Gb *if* I ordered a M1730.

**EDIT** It appears that SLI has to be DISABLED to push two displays.

I'm sorry if that has been asked already but it appears that the XPS 1730 supports an additional monitor. I have attached m ViewSonic vx2025 but I can only use one of the other. I'm sure I'm just missing something. I've loaded the latest Dell drivers. I have not tried the drivers directly from NVidia.

    Any help is appreciated.

:) I got a 5% discount for being a student, I wonder why the offer discounts on their flagship XPS notebook yet they told me they give no discounts on the XPS m1330, not that I wanted one, but it seems a bit strange.

I have downloaded the ones from windows update and searched for all DX9&10 related patches that apply to my system but I will see if I have missed any and I will check the link you gave me.

    Thanks

    Hi,

I just came to realize that my computer is wobbly... the left side front of the computer, left of the mouse is not resting on the table so when you are playing on the computer keyboard and put a bit of preasure, like looking for key F or G the computer it will lose stability...

Is this fixeable?? I just emailed dell to see how to handle this...

    Yea very true.

I have a question guys. The basic model starts at USD$2700. Is it a good value, or do you guys think that at this price point the M1730 should include dual 8800mGTX?

You see, I live in Asia and the chances of upgrading to the dual 8800mGTX (if Dell ever announces it) is pretty much next to impossible so if I get a M1730 I want to know that the price I paid is justifiable for just dual 8700GT.

I think the dual 8700s are around $1,000 so the dual 8800s should be much more. Dell might have already factored this into the Australian website as their prices have jumped up considerably since I bought mine (not on the base model though). But this is all speculation, we'll have to wait and see. ;)

WoW Does that by Default - If you have a Logitech G15 keyboard (or the LCD Panel in the XPS) - WoW has native support for it - Much like Fraps and shows all sort of useful stuff about your Toon in WoW on it.

Much as I am a HUGE WoW Fan - There is not really alot in that package that I don't already have.

I have the XPS 1730, All the Books and Collector's Edition Stuff - The only things I don't have are the Quest Envelope and the Golden Ticket.

I do quite like the WoW Skin for it - But would I really want to return my XPS ust for a new Lid Design.? So for me - The Premium would not really net me much more than I have already.

Also not even sure if it will be available in Europe - Much less the UK - Smells suspiciously like a US only offer to me.

    Frag. Out.
