Thats why I have tried so hard to part with my money (sounds crazy huh)

I will be gone for 2 weeks and unable to accept a delivery so its kind of pointless carrying on...

Given that I may as well give up and see if the M17x shows up....

Hmm, QUAD Core mobile Montevina and SLi'd 9800m... These will probably be on the market around Christmas, just in time to play Crysis 2 :) Current SLi 8800M GTX would not be able to quite cope with this new and demanding game... etc. lol

I love my M1730 but upgrading the GPU to 8800 GTX for around $1000 now with not too many games to utilize it seems a bit excessive. If I were to order it new or were able to get the upgrade on a cheap side, it is a different story, of course. But it might be better to save this cash for the next killer laptop, the Beast Squared.

well I got my new xps 1730 today with SLI 8800's, been installing and updateing stuff for awile so not a whoel lot of tests done, but here is some prelimaries.

    3dmark06 - 9870
    Crysis 1920x1200 - everything on High - 10fps - unpllayable
Crysis 1280x1024 - everything on med - 15-30fps semi playable
Crysis 1024x748 - everything on low - 50-60fps ugly but runs perfectly

so far VERY unimpressed, im sure crapy stock dell drivers play a part but I dotn see new drivers getting me into the 13k mark range witch ive heard sli 8800s reach.

current settings i changed from defualt are:
    SLI Enabled (duh!)
    High performence battery
3D Settings - Multisample, Trilliner, Single Display, Force splitframe 2, antitrospic On, High performence, tripple buffer On

if anyone knows any other tweaks id love to know them, going to try some laptop2go drivers later, but I know my blue wotn work so they will be just for test purposes.

Something seems to be off Raijing.

You should be getting 13k for 3dmark06. Try different drivers.

If you are new to this whole SLI laptop thingy, it's the user, not the system. Play w/ it, tweak it, and you will get to better performance.

also, disable unecessary windows services, vista UAC, search indexing, security center, and other resource clogging stuff...

let us know how it goes!

BTW, are you on RAID 0 or RAID 1

Well, someone just posted on Whirlpool forums out here in Australia that a Dell rep has emailed him confirming the 8800 gtx SLI option will be released in Australia this Monday the 18th. Should be priced at $4000 for the T8300 option with 2 gig ram, 2 x 160 gig HDD and SLI 8800 GTX's.

So the wait is over Australian friends!

changes drivers to 173.65 games are running alto better

    CoD4 - max everything 4aa 1920x1200 40+fps
    Crysis - 1280x1024 no aa all high - 40+fps
    bioshock - everything maxed 60fps

    3dMark06 - 10,248

mark score still seems low, but the games are running good, blue-ray oviously wont work but for some reason it dident work with the default driver eaither, I get this "Unable DVD or DVD-Device on this computer" if anyone know how to get blue-ray to run id appreciate it.

Oh im running in Raid 0 zergworld

With the rate of new technology there will always be new stuff on the horizon. I'll be happy with the 8800's and some nice gameplay! It'll run all the games I want to play anyways....for now....lol

I didnt. Ive ordered a second XPS for someone at work, and will swap the cards over ;)

This is exactly what pisses me off. So the stock Dell drivers are still crap huh??
I dont really like LV2G drivers since the BluRay stops working. Someone, a few pages back had stock Dell drivers and managed a 12000 3DMark06 score with SLI enabled perfectly fine though?!

Ok ive been recieveing private messages since yesterday asking on how to get the free upgrade to 8800m gtx sli. Here is the best known method of

actually getting anything for free and worked for me no problem.

    (1) Follow these steps clearly. Dont hesitate and be calm until later stages. Remember gift of the gab is a bonus so sweet talk the rep.Your
the one doing the talking so remember.

    (2) Call this number: XPS Premium Support is available 24x7. 0870 366 4180 - 24X7 Support. This is for uk customers

    (3) Generally some calls can take a while to answer i took over 40 mins for a tech to answer. So start off by saying that 40 minutes wait
is a bit of a joke and that your entitled to *Premium XPS Support* as part of the m1730 package when you purchased the machine.

    (4) Cleary state that your having troubles with the graphics in the system.

    (5) Mention that: The graphics card isnt what you come to expect for a >>>whatever you paid<<< for your system. Really sound dissapointed
and that you have been spending nothing but wasted time on trying to get the most out of the system. Also state that your sending
your machine back as your not happy overall with the performance.

    (6) At this stage the technician will argue with this and say that the 8700m SLI Card is a great card for the money or try and be negative
    on your statement.

    (7) Mention that you have not had the *XPS Xperience* and that you have had enough and you sending the machine back and asking for a full
refund. Say that dell was willing to take money for this machine and was advertised as the *BEAST* and the best gaming system money can buy

but you still have yet to witness it.

    (8) In most cases the rep will go away and talk with the supervisor in most cases like this. For a replacement this big the supervisor generally
has the last say in the matter. The rep will try and offer you a 8700m same card as a replacement as you might have a broken or dodgy card.
You need to turn around and say this isnt the case and you dont think it will solve the case.

    (9) Remember the customer is always right and dell ***DOES NOT WANT*** to loose you to another rival company.

    (10) If all went well the rep will put in for a *System* Replacement or a *GFX Replacement*. A new refrence number will be generated
and the exisiting outstanding case closed. If the cards are in stock expect a NBD Fitting. And enjoy your free upgrade all thanks To DELL.

    Note:

If your within your 7-Day grace period for uk then you have a much greater chance. For rest of world take this into considertaion.

It was easier for me since i purchased an M170 2 years ago. Then got a m1710 replacement as the m170 suffered from a damaged LCD
and overheating problems. It was sent out with a 7900GS which i argued wasnt as quick as the 7800GTX. So a 7950GTX 512mb was sent out
as a replacement card. This m1710 i still wasnt happy with so i spent a couple of days complaining about the bluetooth wasnt working correctly
and that the system kept BSOD and kept freezing and the GFX wasnt upto scratch. The technician went away and talked to his supervisor
and requested a m1730 would be the case as another call out wouldnt fix the problems. The machine was spec`ed out with a T7700 CPU but i sent
an email back to tech support saying that the m1710 came with a T7600G which was overclockable. The order was then canceled and a X7900 CPU
was requested in the order. So i got a way better CPU just for hassling more. So a £650 upgrade already

Total cost of upgrades from dell:

    Basic m1730 system: £2600 (with X7900 CPU)
8800MGTX Sli Card: £540 (upgrade from 8700m GT)

Total Cost to customer: FREE OF CHARGE

Im actually a business customer as i used to run a game hosting company and purchased poweredges and switches from dell 2 years ago.Like ifti says its all about hassling and just working on the reps. Ifti does the same with his account manager just keep nagging them.It will pay off in the end!

I am guessing this covers the 9000 desktop cards only. Those usually appear much sooner compared to the laptop versions. I think Nvidia won't bring the Laptop versions until Christmas.

What is both more interesting and more immediate, though, is the imminent realease of the Perynn Core 2 Extreme X9000. The first benchmark conducted on a Dell XPS M1730 indicates that we should have a laptop able to play Crysis nicely by the end of this Month ready to order. Check this out:

    http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2260221,00.asp

It plays Crysis at 1920x1200 and details set to high with 26 FPS!

So don't order your 8800 GTX system yet. More to come on the processor side.

At the moment lower category Perynn processors have become available in the US and Hong Kong, but the X9000 is still coming.

1.There will be no other high-end graphics car for lap tops out at least untill Christmas, so we can all relax for a while :)
    2. Puremind, crysis will run just fine on any C2D CPU with over 2ghz and 3MB of L2 cash. So, there is no real difference if you will run it on T7700 or X9000.
    3. Raijing, congratz on your new machine :) You really should be getting better 3D mark results and better performance in crysis. First of all turn off aero in vista. It looks good, but in my case, it started to ennoy me in a few days after using it. Also, read somewhere, that it might decrease performance in games by up to 20%. Also, as it has been mantioned here, turn off all the windows stuff you don't need.
Also, when my friend got a new lap top with vista on it, it was very unstable and slow for a first few days, probably because of indexing or something like that. And also check this guide out http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=202449 might help you to encrease performance ;) Waiting to hear on your progress :)

just reconfirmed it that the m1730 ***DOES NOT NEED A MOBO SWAP*** for the 8800m gtx SLI card upgrade. New card coming next week and ive the m1730 with 8700sli installed. I did originally say last year that dell designed the m1730 with 8800M gtx SLI but they had teething problems and had to pull it at last minute. :)

So does this mean I can buy the card on its own now? - fed up of ringing and being put on hold to get this part?

Also got an LG panel coming from the US for it next week, so it should be a damn sight better than the **** sharp thats currently in there.

What was the name of the game hosting company btw dazzy?

We was "Elektrik Gaming" a UK GSP. We was a LTD Company WORLDUK before we declared bankrupt.

I was one of the lucky ones to get the LG LPL0032 Panel. It clearly is the best panel ever on a laptop and the fastest at 5ms response time.Even beats the Rock X-Glass LCD and the SAGER and Alienware LCDS.

The card isnt actual part "610-21xxxx whatever" its a totally different part number that dell uses internally. "UPG 512mb xxx whatever" or something like that.

Back when I had my XPS M1730, I had the Samsung LCD (Australia only get the samsung panel). I actually thought it was pretty damn good, yeah there was a bit of light leakage from the bottom, but the colours were vibrant, the res good and crisp. Games played great with no blurring that I could see.

I don't see what all the fuss is about?

I have to agree with you here.
I have the Samsung panel, and yes I get a little light leakage along the bottom, but its really nothing that annoys me. Colours are beautiful - sharp and vibrant. I really was amazed at the quality when I first started it up. Ive also heard that for HD movies (BluRay) its the best screen to use, but I cant guarantee that since its the only screen Ive used - thats just what someone else said a few pages back....
Im gonna stick with this panel, rather then have some technician touch up my system and mess it up while changing the panel!

Cant wait to receive my second system! I guess I could check out the panel in that system, and if its better perform a swapout, just like I will with the cards. I may also end up swapping the keyboard and keep the remote as a spare, the person Im getting it for at work wil never know the difference ;)

Are blanking plates for the Expresscard slot available?

I had Samsung(E1705), LG (currently on M1730-came w/ it), and Sharp (had it on E1705).

Samsung did have horrible leakage, but LG and Sharp looks pretty good IMO.

If I had choice to pick, I'd pick Sharp in my experience.

You cant buy the card on its own yet - thats what the upgrade program is all about. I tried getting the card alone using a part number but my account manager stated he couldnt get it - and he's usually able to blag anything for me. Thats why I kinda convinced my boss he needed a new laptop ;)

Hmmm. as I said the leakage doesnt bother me too much TBH, but I may check what my second lappy comes with, and swap the panel over if its better.
Ive got the gray colour, whereas the second M1730 is blue. Thought Id check out which looks better and if the blue looks better I'll swap over the entir lid of the unit ;) I think Id probably stick with the gray though TBH.....
My boss knows Im swapping the cards, but dont want to push it too much ;)

Thanks for the confirmation, I didnt think it did. Also as Achillies pointed out, another guy has already performed the swap in another forum - I questioned him via PM and he confirmed it also.

As part of the upgrade program, Dell will send out technicians to replace the unit for users, since the unit is a FRU. I swear them technicians are sometimes so stupid - Ive corrected them on a number of occasions.

I had a techy swap out a mainboard once on my previous D620 - the idiot forgot to put the rubber part in where the lights go, so the lights bleed into one another. He noticed at the end that he left it out, since I saw him look at it and wonder what it was, they stick it in his case to hide it! I had to ask him to give it back and told him Id put it back in myself - needless to say, he was a little embarrassed ;)

You guys that have the 8800's already (the lucky gits!)..........

Anyone comment on the stock Dell drivers? Obviously they wont b ethe best available, but what are they like performance wise? I want my BluRay drive to continue working, and if performance is good enough to run games well, I'll stick to them.....Im secretly hoping they will be good enough - not briliant, but enough!

Id have to phone up XPS Tech support in CANADA OR USA as UK branch is closed until monday morning. Costs a bomb to call from UK to UK DELL SWITCH then to transfer to USA is costly.

I dont think you could do much with the part number anyway. Theres nothing you can really do except sit tight and wait for the upgrade - as frustrating a it is!

Well if you look at the panel all day long every day like I do - the light leakage is far more noticable - its dire in fact, and like the prev poster said, and the dell technicians i've spoken to as well come to that - the tech spec of the LG panel FAR exceeds both the samsung and the sharp, I'll take some high res photos next week of both of them one after the other to show you just how bad the others are in comparison. If your second machine comes with the LG panel - i'd swap that out too - your eyes are worth it.

I needed it for XPS TS. They are trying to get me upgraded due to a unresolved 8700m issue. Almost thought I had a system swap earlier but CC shut it down.

BTW, what do you think the color variation is between your smoke grey and my smoke gray? LOL :D

Somebody who has the XPS 1730 with both 8800M GTX can say to me if the portable is quiet?
Furthermore, I've got a TV with HDMI, how can I connect the XPS 1730 on it since it does not have HDMI?

    Thank you for your answers!
    Best regards from France.

I think Gray is slightly lighter then Grey. The eyes cannot see the difference, but it is there....

lol, we spell Gray 'Grey' over here. In fact, when I was creating my sig, I sat for a second thinking about which way to write the damn word! lol

You can get a DVI to HDMI cable. I didnt get it with my system so I rang my account manager. Not sure if you are supposed to get it free or not, but he sent it to me for free. Its a good quality one as well.
So its the DVI to HDMI cable to the TV, which can carry the 1080p signal, and an audio cable with the 3.5mm stereo jack from the laptop to the TV also - or a higher quality audio cable to connect to speakers if you wish.....
