That's not a change, the vent's always been only covered with the lid open a long way. Some people ( ghost_boxer...) just got a bit overexcited about it.

Just got my Studio XPS 13, looks good and with Dells install of Vista it gots no Cpu-noise.
But when i install retail Vista(non Dell DVD) it have a lot of noise from CPU when cpu is idle or with low load.
If i connect a bluetooth mouse Cpu-noise is gone.

I put back Dell-image, and Cpu-noise is gone.

Exactly the same with my Latitude E6500.

So, what do Dell do to their install\image\DVD to avoid Cpu-noise?

I had the same problem, Dell replaced my screen.

My screen with bulges was a SEC****(dont remember 5443? ;) got replaced with a LGD0145, that appears to me to be a lot brighter, clear and very good colors, and with no bulges ;)

I wouldn't say it's the screen brand that caused the bulge. Mine's an SEC5441 with no bulges.

Okay.....I am on my 2nd SXPS 13 because my 1st one had a screen defect.

Just received the replacement today.......but the front indicator lights aren't lighting up......any solution to this?

EDIT: Hmm.....reinstalling Vista, and installing the wireless card driver turned the Wifi light back on, but.....still nothing on the HDD status light.

EDIT: Now the Wifi light is back to being dead......

Just to let those who had problems with the touch buttons, it is an issue with the hibernate feature that should be fixed in a future bios update. It is the only problem I have with my notebook and it is fixable. Great notebook by the way. I would suggest this to anyone who needs a high performance, portable notebook.

if anyone has wobbley feet dell has a replacement bottom case cover kit now for $49.99 part number G889F (this isnt avaiable on the website i looked).. u have to call 1-800-357-3355

this will solve the wobbley feet issue no coupons/epp discounts can be applied to it because its coming from their "spare parts" divison and is to be considered a refurbished part..which makes no sense..

i talked to a towely on the phone so im a bit worried on ordering this..

whats dells return policy on spare parts? would i be forced to pay a restocking fee if this isnt the right part i need?

after some searching ive found.. http://accessories.dell.com/sna/pro...=SpecsTab&~wsf=EmailFriendFragment&~lt=mobile

    ah.. found more

    http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=prov&sku=G889F

    but now ive also found

    http://accessories.dell.com/sna/products/System_Cases/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=prov&sku=M350G

i wonder which is the proper one for replacing the metal case cover

    hi everyone..
has anyone of you noticed a vibrating noise from the slot load drive for certain dvds? i have tried 5 dvds and 3 of them made very loud noise. its so loud that i even in second room i can hear it.
i used same dvds in the toshiba i have and it runs them silently.
i know that slot load drives make more noise but this one actually makes u feel like u r sitting in a jet..!
is there any fix to this or should i go for a replacement? i have already returned my previous one within 21 days cos the screen had a few scrathes. i am having this slot load problem with the new one

    thank you

I just got mine in yesterday, and from the brief time i've had it, I like it. Its really fast, feels solid, and the key pad and screen are really nice. Battery life in the few tests i've done, has been ok for me, though as the battery starts to degenerate, i can see having the buy an extended. I've done a re-install of Windows and and drivers from Dell's website (so I know I have the latests).

Only two things I can find wrong with this comp. It has a slight wobble, but not that big of deal.
The other is this wierd thing the screen does when on battery power. I see horizontal stripes appear speriodically on the screen (especially when playing video). The white stripes are very thin (about as thin as a piece of paper) and about a quarter of the screen wide and flicker in different locations on the screen randomly, but only on battery power, not plugged in. I think it may have something to do with the drivers for my display (under monitor, it says "Generic pNp Monitor") But I can't find the drivers for this paticular screen (its the LGD0145). Does this seem plausible that thats what causing the flicker? Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

Are you in school? I ask because I can get Vista Ultimate x64 through a school deal for $65, much cheaper than the Dell upgrade. FWIW...if you are in school and the deal is available, I would cancel that order and save some money. If not, disregard this message. :)

Is it really worth the "upgrade" to Vista Ultimate? I compared home premium with ultimate and didn't really see much of differece.

I use Vista Ultimate on my desktop, there really is hardly any difference just Dreamscene and a few little things. Really not worth the upgrade in my opinion.

update, so my wobbely feet issue and ordering the replacement kit. well i chatted online with dell, and altho this laptop is from bestbuy they are sending out a service tech and replacing the bottom of my laptop for FREE. i also managed to get 1-yr of onsite service for free even tho it was not purchased from bestbuy. thumbs up on that one.

so again if you have wobbely feet get ahold of XPS Premium Chat Support and if u keep pushing they will send QLX out to resolve your issue.

    Hi Folks,

I have posted on here a few times when I first bought my studio-xps 1340. I have been on the fortunate few to have no problems with the screen or feet, though today I have unfortunately experienced 2 blue screen with no rhyme or reason. Used the computer this morning and the shut it down. Turned it back on when I returned this evening and it blue screened. The launch startup repair reported it was a "unknown bugcheck". It went through this and then restarted, though extremely slow and did not have everything so I tried to restart and finally had to do a forced shutdown. Booted up find and was working. Let it take a break and shut down while I had supper, went to turn it on about 2 hours later and another bluescreen, same report of an "unknown bugcheck". Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have not downloaded anything suspicious and have few programs installed, mainly just have my documents on the computer.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, Thanks

Sorry for the double post but I do have one bit of info I left out. Before I shut down this morning I noticed updates from Microsoft were ready to be installed, thought I would wait till later and when I viewed the update history it showed they failed at the same time I booted up my computer. So maybe they tried installing upon bootup and it caused the blue screen? Also, after the first blue screen I did the system restore and when it was working updated microsoft as the updates suggested. So when it bluescreened the second time, I did another system restore and notice the same updates need to be installed, plus a new one for windows defender. Have not downloaded or installed them yet.

Any one else having issues with todays microsoft updates?

Go to control panel, classic view, look for a button called performance rating or something to that effect. Open it and click advanced. There should be a message at the top of the box that list performance issuse. There is also an error log in there that you can view.

    Thank-you very much,

It showed that cmdagent.exe is causing windows to start slowly, though I am not sure if this would cause it to bluescreen. I believe the cmdagent is comodo, my firewall and antivirus, will have to search this more.

Also, the problem reports list showed each of the things which happened, and was useful, such as windows modules installer having issues, I believe the updates, and windows shutting down, which I saw first hand.

    Thanks again

    Hi,

Sorry to post about this again, I have two posts a few lines above about my computer blue screening, and it happened again this morning. It seems anytime I shut it down and start it the computer blue screens. Any information or help would be greatly appreciated.

About the noise under the lest palm rest. My hd will make certain noises at times when it is working, occasionally clicking, and a few times it may a long click/rattle noise, just thought it was the hd, though not sure why it was doing that.

    thanks

Trying to avoid a reformat seeing as this issue just arose about 5 weeks into use. I was just looking to see if others had experienced recent unexpected blue screens, besides the few occasional ones when first booting the computer for the first time. Thank-you for the suggestion.

Is now on Fedex vehicle for delivery...the waiting continues...

I will not be posting unboxing pics...I equate that with posting pictures of the GF and I doing the "hibbidy-dibbidy"...lol...a very sacred moment, not meant for public viewing...

Reviews and first impressions are imminent, and I am watching out the door like a crack head...lol...

Edit: So, it came at 10 a.m. I spent 30 mins just staring at the box, letting it acclimate. Then, I got it out, let it charge, and am still setting it up. It does wobble a bit, but I'll get that straightened out soon.

The dammed thing is just the fastest computer I have ever touched or seen. It's awesome, and worth every penny so far. Other than the wobble, I have noticed no defects. No BSOD's during updates or anything. It only found 11 updates, and apparently, they (Dell) updated it when they tested it on 3/8. Fine by me...

On a side note, the 15 mo subscription to Trend that they sent is actually a full 3 license subscription, and will let me install it on two more computers. Sweet, even if it isn't necessarily the best program out there, it's free...

Still working on getting the Facial Rec stuff working. I am having too much fun to restart it a bunch...

Going to install Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault later, and give it a go...

Sweet man! You get the 9400 or the 9500? I am assuming you got the 320gb HD?

What sort of temperatures/battery life are you getting?

9500. The cpu (P8700) is idling about 48ish, maxing at 58-60. The GPU is idling around 57, and topping at 70, but I haven't put it through any real stress yet. Just some movies, when I was checking everything for function.

Haven't unhooked it from the wall yet, so no battery tests. Got the 320 standard drive, it's a WD (WD3200BJKT, specifically).

Edit: I am head-over-heels in love so far...

    It's worth the wait...

Just got finished playing Call of Duty (the first one)(about an hour)...CPU=68C, GPUs=73C and 74C, card one and two respectively...

Dam game looks awesome when you can turn every detail up...need to "buy" some newer games...

I'm going to try Trend and see how I like it...nothing's permanent... :)

Other than that, it's awesome...I already got rid of the wobble...

my theory as to why they wobble...when you torque fasteners, especially on a flat metal surface, you have to follow a certain pattern, and tighten in steps. The Malaysians, I believe, either don't understand that, or just don't care. Either way, it's NBD...

Might write Michael Dell an expository friendly email explaining the problem and the probable cause. No matter what, $1100 and up laptops should not wobble...if that's the worst I have to deal with, then I am exstatic...

Oh, and I installed (through updates) SP2, and it f'ed up my Facial Recognition. Got to log in with it twice...gotta try a reinstall later...it's slow, anyway, but it's still cool...

When you put it on, tighten the screws down in a criss-cross fashion, and a little at a time. Doing so distributes the load evenly across the chassis, and prevents warping.

If you're a fellow mechanic, liken it to a head gasket install, or a valve cover gasket...

So, I'm on the brink of getting this and have read pages 60 - 185 just to get a good idea of what this is about. It seems like a terrible terrible laptop, but I am thinking of getting it as it just looks too good and spec wise it's what I've been looking for.

Anyway, I know these have been asked earlier in the thread, but it seems the later models have possibly attended to some minor problems.
How is the DPC Latency? Has it improved with the newer models. In what situations are they noticeable?

Has DVD Playback improved? Does the screen still appear grainy when off the battery? Does the drive make a helluva noise when running DVDs?

Are people's Wireless 1515 devices working properly? I primarily use Wireless so it's a big thing for me.

Is it possible to apply AS5 heatsink paste in the Dell to improve CPU temps?

Would getting the 7200RPM 320GB drive produce less heat than the 500GB 5400RPM or the other way round?

Are there any other problems worth noting?

I'm coming from a 14" Compaq, and though I am happy with it's working (running XP barebones) I was also thinking of replacing it with IBM Lenovo T400 which is about $1500AUD as opposed the Dell which is about $2000AUD. Just want something that will last at least another 3 years. Apologies for the questions, but it is quite hard to get my head around where this laptop is heading in terms of improving since release.
