I have a question about Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 DEMO.

It runs good 5 fps quicker on Power Save with only dedicated graphics than in Hybrid SLI in high performance...I don't know what is going on...

is it possible that the demo just doesnt support Hybrid SLI in any way? Do you need a game to support SLI for Hybrid SLI to offer any boost in performance?

My laptop is Dell XPS 1340 by the way, with 9500M GE on board.

received my xps 13 a week ago. wanting now to do a clean install. when i use the utilities disk, it only ticks a few of the drivers. i suspect i need more than that. i have checked the dell website and entered my tag number and it gives much more drivers. how do i know which ones i actually need.

for example under chipset, it has nvidia mcp79 as well as rioch card reader.

i gather i need the card reader but what is the mcp79 chipset?

From what I gather it's nVidia's answer to Centrino - processor support, wireless, northbridge and southbridge.

Now I have 2 problems with my sxps13. First sometimes the wireless on/off switch, volume up/down that row won't work. I even restarted it but no hope. the solution to this is to shut down the laptop completely. This must something to do with the power cord that when i unplug it and replug again this will happens but not all the times. Then there is one dust in the LED but not dead pixel. Do i have to call Dell for this even tho it passed 21 days of invoice? I also have a problem with the new graphic drivers that when the laptop goes to screen savers for more than 30 minutes then it will freeze. So i change back the old one and have no problems with that.

    Hi all,

I'm running BIOS version A2 and there is a option to enable Intel Virtualization Technology. Is this option present on the latest BIOS (A4)?

    Thank you.

ai... bec of the new studio xps the figureprints issue, i feel very uneasy to make the decision on whether i need to go back to the old xps m1330, bec:
    1. I really hate clean all figureprints all the time, when take around the office, jalan jalan, people only can see figureprints so obviously. M1330 no any problem on this.
    2. No 9 cell, as old xps m1330 has.

Really cannot understand why this new xps the designer design this laptop with so easy to get figureprints, ok the cover lid is glass ok, but the plam area why why why... sad

How everyone think about this figureprints, pls suggest me shall I quit this new xps 13, but the old xps m1330? thanks

I was wondering if anyone found a sollution to the random freezes of the SXPS 1340. I've had mine for 3 days, clean vista 32 business install, latest bios and drivers from dell site and it freezes randomly, most of the time when left idle for a few seconds in windows.
Anyone found out a definitive cause and/or sollution for the freezes? Thanks.

From what I hear, it may have something to do with the video drivers.

TBH if it's a driver problem I think sooner or later dell will fix it. I am interested if anyone who had his machine freeze somehow solved the issue so that I know if it's a software or a hardware issue. If it's a hardware issue then I need to send it back ofcourse but I'd rather not if the problem can be solved or is specific to all machines. Thanks again

Well, It is a driver's problem. When i updated my video driver to A05, it would rando freeze too. So I changed back to A04 and the problem solved. :D However I am having issue with the dust specks inside the LED, I don't know whether I should call Dell or not. Maybe I didn't look very carfully at the screen so now it has 4 dust specks. If I remeber correctly that it didn't have any dust speck when it arrived.

There is a 9 cell battery for SXPS 13. Go to upgrade center and put in your service tag. Click system drives and the 9 cell battery will be there for $79.99 :p you can put some cloth or tissue at the palm area or you can wear gloves :D

There's a new BIOS available, A05, but it seems to break the touch media buttons. I reflashed back to A04, and the buttons worked again.

Dunno if it's just my SXPS13 or a bug in the new BIOS.

EDIT: Funny, I went into BIOS and reset all values to default. Seems to have re-enabled the touch media buttons. Odd.

Currently trying to find out the cause of this too. I am now trying to run it with no graphics card drivers installed to see if it freezes.

Let me know how you get on. I have just installed the new Bios but I doubt that will help.

    Hello,

I am new to the forum. I have the following machine on order:

    XPS 1340, Intel Core 2 Duo P9600 (2.66GHz/1066Mhz FSB/6M L2 Cache)
    4GB, DDR3, 1067 MHz 2 Dimm
    NVIDIA GeForce MCP79MX
256GB Dell High Performance Solid State Hard Drive, 2.5MM
Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 Home Premium Edition (32 Bit).

    Questions:
    1. What is the overall experience on this machine? Is it stable. I had a hard time choosing between this and Lenovo T series. I went with the dell because my experience with dell through the years has been positive. Subjective ramblings (positive/negative) are appreciated.

    2. Anyone running my configuration with the SSD? I am curious about overall performance and reliability.

    3. There are lots of recommendations on performance enhancements such as:

    Dell/Vista Bloatware removal
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=157838

    Vista SSD Registry Tweaks
    http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=47212

If you have had success with these types of performance modifications or if you are suffering from BSOD as a result please reply and share.

This will be my primary work machine so I need it to be solid.

I look forward to getting your thoughts and advice.

    Brian

Clean Install of Vista Premium and Driver Installation on -
UK Specification XPS 1340 , Main Board Dell OK183D, P8600, 4GB RAM, 320 GB Hard DIsk, LED Screen, GeForce 9500M, WiFi and Bluetooth

    Hi Noki388

I've faced the same problem as you - not knowing which drivers to install and in which order. I am re-installing on a 1340 which is about to be replaced as it wont charge its battery.

I am trying the re-install as I want 3 separate partitions. So, installed Vista OK including making 3 partitions. Then came the driver install. I did as much research as I could from Dell, this forum and from using the Drivers disk and I came up with the following drivers, installed in the order shown. I did a reboot between each driver whether it was required or not.

    Order File ID Description
1 R214474 System Utilities: Dell System Software
2 R182065 Dell Utility – Recommended Vista Power Management Settings
    3 R202281 Chip Set nVidia MCP79 Chipset
4 R100894 Chip Set Ricoh Driver
    5 R215031 Video nVidia GeForce9500M
6 R202277 Network: nVidia Ethernet Controller
    7 R200294 Dell Quick Set
    8 R214419 IDT Driver for 92HD73C1 Audio
    9 R198377 Network Dell Wireless 1515 (11agn)
    10 Optional Dell Wireless 370 BlueTooth (61MB)
    11 R204794 Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Vista SP1 (11MB)
12 R203482 Input Synaptics Touch Pad
13 R196531 ITE IT8512 CIR Receiver (Urgent) – improve reliability of system
14 R207341 Input Creative Labs Integrated Webcam

I did not install number 10, but I think I might yet need it.

I did not load any of the Dell applications. The only capability I seem to be missing is the, possibly useful, Dell Webcam application and associated Face Recognition program. I dont have disks to re-install those applications. I understand this is a common problem. I will call Dell and ask them to send them to me. The Dell Downloads Store ( https://smartsource.dell.com/Web) where these programs are available does not allow downloads from non US people. Being in the UK, this avenue is not available to me (I have tried ...)

The only freeze I've had since that install was once when mousing over the 'Memory Bandwidth' option in SiSoft Sandra Lite 2009.

I've loaded Office 2002, Photoshop Elements V7 and had them all running at once.

I'm hoping this may turn out to be a good install, which I can repeat when I get my replacement latop.

I'd appreciate any comments from others who have done re-installs. Does this look about right for a minimum set of drivers installed in the right order?

    Thanks

    Geoff

I have run it for 2 days almost nonstop and it hasn't frozen. The only thing I have done different is that I have never enabled hybrid sli. All the times it had froze I had enabled sli at one point or another. However I'm not sure that this was the cause or solution because I read about freezing problems from people who have just the integrated 9400 graphics. I'll let you know on my experiences soon.

using the Windows Vista GPU and MEM usage monitors that look some what like a speedometer or a tachometer, what percentage are you all running of Memory usage..

My Laptop with 6gb ram seems to idle around 29% usage, i feel like thats a bit high and could degrade my battery life a bit.

also can someone post the DIY on the thermal paste, my cpu runs HOT

Alright well my new 1340 went through a day in my backpack and now it has multiple scratches on the screen with scratches on the palmrest that match up. Does anyone else have this problem? It seems ridiculous that it will scratch this easily. I am going to finish this week and see if it has gained more scratches and if it does, I might have to return it. This is not acceptable and for the 8 months I have had my M1330 it has not had a single scratch on the screen. Why must companies do things like the edge-to-edge screen that only make the laptop look good on the first day and not for the rest of their life?

Does your screen fit in perfectly? I think mine might not have been put back together correctly (refurbished) because the screen at the top isn't exactly flush with the casing. It can pop out a bit.

The screen does fit in with the casing, but I'm not sure that should affect it much.. do the rubber grips on either side come out enough to prevent the screen from touching the keys and touchpad?

I'm a happy new owner (so far) of the 1340 ("Best Buy Edition"). I've read it's reviews and I did buy it knowing people was complaining about freezing. Lo and ho, it did freeze after a couple of hours after I bought it. I did however updated everything (Bios, video, wireless, you name it). NO more freeze-ups after that. I’m even running FSX with reasonable graphic settings when I have it plugged into the wall.

For some reason, Best Buy doesn’t do a good job about advertising it’s products, so for my greatest surprise and satisfaction it DOES have Bluetooth (Best Buy site says otherwise), and backlit keyboard (the site doesn’t even mention it)…that pleased me a lot when I got home from the store.

It does get hot when I’m using HybridPower because of the graphics, otherwise it’s just warm.

One thing I do have a complaint about, and I might take it back to the store because of it, is that every time it’s reading a CD/DVD it emits a high-pitch-annoying-to-hell noise. Has anyone else experienced something like that? It reads CD/DVD fine. Haven’t tried burning anything so far.

    Thanks

Well the backlit keyboard is stock for all Studios...

I don't think mine has any high-pitched noise. It just sounds like a regular drive.

well, than I might take it back to get a replacement, it's really out of the ordinary. I've owned noisy cd/dvd roms before, but it's a thin, loud noise it makes, I really don't think it's normal.

Is it a half-height card or can you get a full-sized one in there?

yes they do and they leave marks on the screen (dirt that rubs off) yet somehow it still got scratched.

On a related note, I accidently ordered a Studio XPS 13 that I didn't want (removed the wrong one from my cart) and when I called to return it (still sealed) the guy offered me $25 and then $30 to keep it. Not much but I guess the PC itself only cost $770

I didn't take the laptop with me today as I didn't need it but for the next 3 days I will be taking it with me and I will see if it gets more scratches. I like it SO much other than this issue I hope it was just a one time bad luck where something got in and I don't have to return it! I hope they go back to recessed screens, even just a tiny bit would be good.

Yeh, I get the smudge marks from the rubber things too, but you really shouldn't be getting scratches.. might be worth sending it back.

I got a BSOD, DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL when I did a 30mb Windows Update today. Looks like it was one of two security updates that did it. If you get new updates available today I recommend having System Restore on just so you can roll back if necessary (Windows should automatically make a restore point before the update).
First blue screen I've ever had on this so I'd say it was definitely caused by one of today's updates. It went away when I rolled back.

Hi. It´s half-height. Remember to uninstall the Dell´s drivers with the old card on it. No way a full size fits in that space.

Ive had my laptop for a few weeks now. I love it, but it had a few issues. I had the lines flickering on the screen, so I called Dell and had the screen replaced. Flickerings gone now. When the screen was replaced though, the antenna had something wrong (it runs through the lid), or the tech didn't know what he was doing. So now my wireless antenna is messed up. I pick up 3 bars sitting NEXT to my router. Dell can't seem to understand that an antenna could do this, so they're just sending me a new computer.

On another note, I was playing Farcry almost maxed out, and got the GPU up to 92 C a few times. Isn't that a point where it can start affecting parts? Hmm... Love the laptop though!

I've nearly always had trouble explaining some technical problems to Dell's reps over phone, even when I'm being crystal clear. It's nice to see you are getting a new comp out of it though :D

Can you tell me how the Dell tech replaced your screen? Did he/she come to your house and replace it? Do i have to provide anything for the tech such as tip or something else?

Alright I registered with this forum just for this thread. I have purchased a an almost stock SXPS 13 except with the following upgrades: bluetooth, 500 gig hdd, optional video card.

I dual boot Vista and Ubuntu, and use Ubuntu 98% of the time, I just boot into Vista to game and use stupid ABC's video website.

Anyways I thought I would give a run down of my experiences with this machine. First off I am running the Beta 9.04 of Ubuntu and the only problem I have had is with the gnome-keyring-daemon not operating correctly with the Dell 1515 wifi card, but the issue has been getting better with the most recent updates. Everything works in Ubuntu including the media keys, wifi, bluetooth, Nvidia drivers (though only for the 9400), DVD drive, webcam, etc.

As for Vista, I am not a fan of it, but don't use it enough to really complain about it. I am defiantly not a fan of its new wireless networking, it has a problem connecting to my work ap, home ap and ap's on the go. But Ubuntu also has some problems as well, so it might be the Dell 1515 card.

Alright on to my few little problems, the first is I have a question about the charger, can I use a regular Dell 90 watt charger with this laptop, say one that came with a Latitude D420, or a docking station? Second is Ubuntu has recently told me my battery is dieing, it says it only has been able to charge to 48.8 Wh instead of the designed 247.2 Wh. Today is the first time it has told me this, it will probably fix itself, but wondering if this might be problem with my 2 week old laptop. Also if the battery is not charging the full way will the little LED's on the batter itself still light up all the way?

Alright I think thats it, if anyone has any questions about Ubuntu or anything for me let me know. Thanks.

Yes you can use normal dell 90W adapters without problem. I use it every day. You can also use 65W models although the bios will warn you that it'll underclock the laptop. Maybe it underclocks the videocard (haven't tested) but the cpu seems to run at full speed even on a 65W adapter.

Good to know! Thanks, I figured if they didn't want you to use the 90 watt they would have made it a different plug end.
