Hey guys, just wanna ask how these temps are..
temps according to HWMonitor are in attached pic
Since I just got this laptop yesterday, it has A09 BIOS (says it during startup). It also has 9-cell so i guess there is good airflow (correct?).
Question...to the left of the touchpad and also on the touchpad itself, it is kinda warm. What do you think? I am going to download 3dmark05 now and test it, and I will play CS:S later as well. I will post those results as soon as I get them.
Thanks

left of touchpad = hard drive... it does run warm
below touchpad = wireless card, also runs warm
the GPU temp might be a little worrysome if those are idle temps
post some stressed temps -
crap, paper you are scaring me about the GPU. I will post stressed temps soon.
ooo dude i wanted to ask you another thing...the cd drive.
i put in an old audio cd i burned, and i played it on foobar2000. there was a lot of vibration to the left of the touchpad and sound. I know people complained about the sound while inserting/ejecting cd/dvd's, but im fine with that. From what I can remember, before I downloaded foobar2000, I played the audio cd in windows media player and there was no vibration/sound like that..what do u think? -

anyways, the problem with the nVidia GPU is repeated heating+cooling = expansion+contraction = bad for a card-base with impurities.... different rates of expansion
as long as you dont see 90C on a stressed 8600, its fine... no one can predict whether ur GPU will crap out in the future, but the stress test is to make sure ur laptop's fine, no problems with cooling/aligned parts
think about a cooling pad(eg Zalman NC2000) if ur sensitive to temperature(wristpad) -
nah im going to college so i dont know about a cooling pad. Also, I have Lojack but I think i will get a security cable just in case (for added security/protection/deterrent as u said before).
also, let's say in the future something happens and my laptop has to get replaced..will Dell, at my request, allow me to keep my hard drive in the new laptop or no? I really wudnt wanna go through the pain of making vista perfect for me again as it took me like 3-4 hours of doing it today (and im still not done porting my programs). I have accident protection. -
Your temps are fine, your gpu just idles higher than usual. I think its normal for M1530's. What is your max GPU temps?
Max temps is more significant than idle temps. -
i dunno, im d/l 3dmark06 right now and its a huge 500mb file..if u mean the max temp on HWMonitor, it says 67 C
what do you guys think about the cd issue? -
Hm... max GPU temp for my M1530 is 60 C. Did you try to undervolt it?
-
huh? is it safe? warranty-void? I have A09 Bios...i heard that was causing it. d u think?
right now it says max gpu temp is 61 C (HWMonitor) -

Hmm, mine idles at about the same as yours, and hits (absolute max) 79 C while playing a game. I got mine just over 2 weeks ago, and my max GPU temps have climbed from 77 to 79 from the day I got it. I'm hoping they'll stay at 79
(I have my laptop balanced on 2 DVD's on either side to give it perfect airflow).
Actually, my CPU climbed to 75 (both cores) on Assassin's Creed. Whew, I'm hoping that doesn't happen again. -
congrats on yur notebook
i was curious to what was causin the touchpad area to get warm. i powered down my notebook right after a few hours of use and took off the wireless network card cover. i touched the wireless card, and to my surprise, the thing was cool. no heat what so ever. this made me wonder what really was causin all the heat. it can't be the HDD cuz thats on the left side and my HDD stays at high 20's - upper 30's at all times. rarely ever see's temps in the 40c range. *scratches head*
and changin out yur HDD upon repairs/exchanges will not void yur warranty. i would advise lettin dell know before u do it tho. just in case there any discrepansies. -
As far as I know, undervolting shouldn't void your warranty and it's the safest and best procedure to cut down temps..

my 8600 idles between 58-66 c. under load, it can get as high as 81 c. thats probably due it mine being overclocked.

your temps are fine
Idle temperatures are varied in most notebooks. The reasoning behind this is due to their different thermal designs and low-level programming for fans.
Danger zone (high) temperatures are pretty standard due to manufactures low-level specifications of usage. Danger temps are set to downclock the component such as the CPU or GPU in order to cool the component down enough to prevent overheating
Here are temperatures for specific components when they enter the danger zone.:
CPU danger temperature is around 70C
GPU danger temperature is around 90-95C
HDD danger temperature is around 60-65C
Threshold temperatures are also pretty standard once again due to the reasons specified under the danger zone temperatures. These temperatures are the most dangerous to a system, in which permanent hardware damage can be incurred if the user does not remedy the heat issue during which time the user is experiencing temperatures within the danger zone. Systems that have a component that reaches threshold temperatures will usually crash or shutdown when the temperature peaks.
CPU threshold temperature is around 90-100C
GPU threshold temperature is around 100-105C
HDD threshold temperature is varied, but above 65C is bad
Safe temperatures are temperatures are basically any temperature below the danger zone temperatures. Even a 5C-10C difference is ok as long as it stays below the danger zone temperatures -
That was insightful bikerboy!

thanks for all your input guys...i will be doing the stress test (3dmark06) later this morning.
a question about the fans..My XPS Shipped with the A09 Bios, which from what I see on these forums increases the fan cycles at a relatively low-speed (fans turn on more but at low-speed). Let's say I start playing games and the notebook gets kinda hot, will the fans shift to higher speed like in a desktop or is the A09 only programmed to provide consistent bursts of low-speed fanning?
i'll let u guys know the results of the stress test in a couple minutes -
the_flying_shoe Notebook Evangelist
I'm pretty sure that it raises the fan speed as well

Ok, I got my score and temps. They are attached to this post as jpg's.
I cant believe my temperature actually went down...from 63 C beforehand I believe, to the 58 C u see in the pic.
I cant wait to see how CS:Source plays...it was weird, the CPU Test 1 and 2 only gave me 0-2 fps, but the others between 8-30. The test was done on default trial settings.
Do you think Starcraft 2 Will play (I dont expect to use it on highest settings, not even cs:source i think) on my xps when it comes out? -
what do u guys think? how is my score and temperature for a 2-day old xps m1530 (previous post=pics)?

They look great. You will want to keep the A09 bios as it does provide additional cooling. In addition the problem with the Nvidia GPU's is heat cycling, which has the greatest impact when starting up the computer. The A09 bios helps to offset that sudden insurge of heat by kicking the fans on as soon as you start up the computer.

cool! thanks everyone. oh and i got the titanium cruzer into the left-top usb port =D
-
Yeah, its not all that difficult. Glad everything worked out ok!
-
hey..
i just played cs:source for about an hour or so, and then when i hit quit, it wouldn't go to desktop. i used the task manager to delete the process but it still wudnt work..so i pressed the windows key on the keyboard and hit restart. now everythings good, but what the heck? thats the third time i had to restart/shut down (2 times holding down power button because the cursor with the cd spinning [wait] wud not go away, and this is the third) because of a hang up.
also, the touchpad area was quite warm, as well as the left side ports. i checked the temps on startup right away, and GPU was 64 C (like my idle temp).
whats up with the hangups tho....4 gb ram, 2.4ghz core 2 duo. -
-
my GPu idles the same as you, under stress it reaches 80 C so you should be OK, below your touchpad is your wireless card, and at the left i present you with your hard drive, a neat little scratchbook witch stores data, naa just kidding, but yeah, both of them run hotter than my cpu and GPU, its normal. ( or is it ?)
-
Hey paper_wastage, I was wondering about using a notebook cooler with my M1530 with an 8600 and I have a question about the heat problem with the video card.
If you used a notebook cooler all the time, then wouldn't the GPU part expand and contract just as much because both the idle temps and stressed temps are lower? If you were to stress the video card with a notebook cooler, then shut off the cooler once you're done playing, wouldn't the gpu not expend/contract as much because the idle temps aren't any lower than usual? -
dude its crazy, my gpu is like the same idle and after 2 hours of cs:source..
how do i check what nvidia driver i have now? I remember hearing something about a 174.xx being the stablest or sticking with the dell drivers. -
i have the 175.97 and its working well, you can download it from dell in the xps m1330's drivers section, also you could check out http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=3710263
it has lots of useful info on new drivers.
cheers -
thx mate i appreciate it
-
no problem, if there is anything else you need just ask
best of luck with that new xps m1530, and welcome to the club! -
figured it out, 174.31 is my driver right now (last 5 digits of driver under device manager)
i just have one question but its not about the temp/gpu. its about the microphone in-line jack. i bought a headset and the headset-in jack works (both work), but vista doesn't pick up my microphone jack. I disabled the internal microphone (next to the webcam), and it says the SigmaTel microphone jack is enabled, but in Ventrilo it doesn't work.
How can i disable the internal mic and enable the external mic (by the way, the internal mic is "blurry") -
right click the speaker icon.
make sure yur playback devices are active.
under the "recording" tab, see if yur notebook is detectin yur device and make sure its the primary device.
