Coming from a 19' CRT at 1024x768 to a 15' 1980x1080 is it going to be a huge difference? I really had my mind set on the 1080p option but after looking at pictures of them they really seem way too small. Would 15' 720p or 17' 900p be better?

Well i had 1200×800 on XPS M1530 for 3 years and never felt that i need more resolution than this on 15 screen.
But recently i checked on my friend's 16 Vaio F 1920×1080... on first look it felt little small but when i used it for a while ... loved it...
So i decided to go for Full HD on my new XPS....
in your case difference is bigger but i would still say give it a try on some local shop etc... u might like it....
and one more thing... 720p on xps 15 and 900p on xps 17 are much lower quality than full HD ones in terms of contrast and viewing angles so take that into account also... -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
With DPI scaling not really?
With most manufacturers, a panel upgrade you normally get a better panel (higher nits, higher color gamut).
Besides 4:3 is a nice resolution. -
Personally, I don't think I will ever be able to go to a lower ratio of resolution to screen size of 1920x1080 at 15' after this laptop. I don't use DPI scaling (everything is at 100%), and have no troubles reading normal text (ie, this forum). Everything is so crisp and clear... I love it!
At the same time, I understand that someone did have eyesight trouble, that the high resolution combined with a smallish screen could be troublesome, but then DPI scaling is likely the answer there. -
You almost can't go wrong with the B+RGLED 1080p on the XPS 15. It's one of the best quality screens you can buy on a consumer-class laptop. Yes it might make things look tiny at first, but generally you hold your head further back from a desktop monitor than a laptop display.
I got used to 1600x1200 in 15" then 2048x1536 in 15" after the QXGA-mod within the first few minutes of using the screens, on my old thinkpad T42p.
Plus, if you really need it, there's always that Windows DPI-scaling feature. -
I'm coming from 1440 x 900 17" laptop, after I checked out a FHD screen at bestbuy last week I don't think I will ever buy anything less than 1080p.

1080p is great - but it depends on how you're going to use your notebook.
I have an external 26" 1920x1200 screen which is amazing - it would put any notebook screen (even the dreamcolor) to shame. I end up mostly just using that.
But having 1080p on the go is very useful - if you're used to this amount of real-estate, you won't want to go back.
cheers,

Was it 15.6" or 17.3"?
1080p Too much?
