I've noticed Dell now have two options for the XPS 17 screens :-

    1080p FHD 3D WLED TL (£280)

    1080p FHD WLED AG (£90)

Is the only difference between the two that one has 3d?

Now I can get a decent 1080p laptop for less than a £1000 the XPS 17 looks far more tempting.

Culd be wrong... but the 3D one will prob be glossy and 120hz, the AG will be antiglare and 60hz

the 3D screen is nice, and bright... but you'll lose the optimus features = battery life/widi etc

personally don't like anti-glare screens as they kinda look like they have a speckled film over it but have heard OK things about this one... unless you really want the 3D features I'd go with the AG screen

edit - or, if you can get hold of an "AUO B173HW01 v.4 1080p" screen just buy the basic 900p screen and install the new one yourself

I have an XPS17 L702x with the AG screen. I had to phone to get it as it was not on the web site. Glad I did. No earthly desire for 3D, cannot see the point of it. Also if you get the 3D screen, you have to buy a more expensive graphics card.
The only down side is that with the AG screen, I was limiited to 8GB of RAM. That was a bit disappointing.

Limited to 8gb when ordering the system? Is it possible to install more ram yourself?

No limit as in Dell only gives you 2 RAM slots. The 3D with the 555m card gets 4 slots.

Tell you real. the cost 720p, 1080, 1080 3D, cost is closed/same. if you can change yourself, that is better update from dell. you can choice lower price with high quality model from auo.

auo just taiwan lcd company, the lcd sell is very cheap. dell just sell the higher price. asus, acer or china x brand also used this kind lcd panel. but the notebook sell price very cheap.

becareful most lcd down has dead pixel, please check with detail.

not think the auo XXXXX model is god. just 'a lcd', 6month-one year that has a dust, dead pixel, not beauty again. and you will plan good notebook and other good lcd such as ips panel.
