I got my xps over a month ago now. Pretty sweet laptop upgraded from a sony vaio. two issues fan is loud and the 130w power adapter heats up to the point that i can make mini hot cakes on it.

I've done some reading around the forums about throttling and the old 95w power adapters thinking that i should be in the clear.

I'm not worried about the laptop just how hot this power adapter gets. Is this normal? If not, what can I do to keep it cool? If it is normal...who wants hot cakes!?

Yes it does get pretty hot. Now, hot enough to "make mini hot cakes" might not feel as hot for me as it does for you, but I understand what you mean. However, the more demanding the task you're performing on your system (gaming, etc; things that task GPU/ CPU), the more power needed, so the hotter the adapter gets. When you're not tasking the system, the adapter really shouldn't be getting that hot, maybe only lukewarm.

As far as keeping it cool, I don't think there's too much you can do. Apart from the obvious, like keeping it away from heat sources (like radiators, heaters, etc) and maybe using it in a cooler room, there's not too much else. If you feel it's still getting too hot when not being tasked, call up Dell and tell them about it. I'm sure they won't give you too much of a problem with an exchange.

I'd like some hot cakes though...
