Does anyone know if the 1640 uses a DIFFERENT touchpad then the 1530 does? I know they are both synaptics, but I am hoping they are different peices of hardware. I am thinking of replacing my 1530 with a 1640 and do not want to be plagued by the same touch pad issues (jitterness, unresponsiveness, etc, etc) that the 1530 has (even with the latest bios)

The XPS 1530 uses an Alps touchpad, while the XPS 1330 has a Synaptics touchpad. I'm not sure what they've put in the 1640.
Synaptics touchpads are absolutely superior. -
great! The 1640 uses synaptics,
the alps in the 1530 is such a POS (since you said its alps, that might explain why it sucks so badly) -
Most Dell notebooks use Synaptics touchpads, so you shouldn't have any troubles with the Studio XPS 16 touchpad.

I've actually adjusted my Alps touchpad to be decently smooth and responsive. You just need the right drivers and some knowledge of the relevant registry entries.

i use to have a m1530, i dont see why people moan about the touchpad, mine was fine.
it was better then my acer 8930g touchpad -
Mine actually came pretty good, on a very rare occasion it will start going crazy, but i fix it moving my finger across the pad, from upper right to lower left, up and down, and this fixes it
-
Yeah, mine is fine (usually). Sometimes it starts moving itself around, either huge jumps or just a few pixels, but i suspect its oil from my fingers.
And it also totally freaks out when the lid is shut and it isn't in standby, probably because it's too hot. -
That was a known problem. Do a BIOS update, it's fixed in BOIS version A08 and above.

Only USB mouse (sleep mode)

I actually spoke to REC (the highest tech support level) who acknowledged that an issue DOES exist with the 1530 affecting a certain subset of users. They agreed to refund me my system price to allow me to buy a new one (I purchased this system in 12/07!!!)
