My older 1640 came with the 3670 GPU. It's soldered, so if I wanted the 4670 I would need to replace the system board.

I've seen this part number in my searches for 4670-bearing motherboards: Y503R. On eBay, those motherboards run $50-$100, or more.

That said, it is a very cheap upgrade to replace the motherboard and essentially double GPU performance. I would like to hear from any user who has replaced the system board in a 1640 for GPU upgrade purposes. Supposedly, people around here have done exactly that... Is my part number right? What about transferring the service tag? Anything I should note that's not "normal" (like a desktop mobo swap)?

Avoiding "The OP Never Delivers" if s/he solves the problem:

The Radeon 4670 motherboard is physically incompatible with at least the 3670 heatsink. It is also possible that the 4670 motherboard requires a different laptop base. This IS technically possible to upgrade, but it would require a motherboard, heatsink and possibly entire new laptop base.
