    Hi,

I am getting my 1640's motherboard and lcd screen replaced tommorw (dell are taking laptop into the centre). I have the 512mb Ati card, I understand the new motherboard has a 1gb card. What are the chances I will get the new motherboard and hence the new card? Or will they still have the old motherboard replacements?

I am getting it fixed for heat issues. Also will they need to login to my laptop (ie will they need my password or not)

    Cheers

Most likely they will replace your data to factory default, because only then they can assure their tests are running correct. After all they have to guarantee your laptop is up and running again.
Basically I would take out the hard drive. Then they cannot damage something or else.

I would never ever give away my personal data (Especially passwords!!!) to anybody else! :eek2:
You just cannot know what they will do with it.

When my motherboard was replaced, theya did warn me that they may have to reformat the drive, I put in a spare drive, just in case.

On my old Dell, (in which I didn't have onsite service) I always sent it in without the HDD (after confirming with them). Also in my old laptop it was a matter of one screw to get the drive out. Anyway, never send them any data that you cannot afford to loose. Come to think about it, we did the same for a Gateway, school owned laptop, that needed to be sent for repair.
