Could someone clarify me on the available screen choices for the 1640. I am rather consfused. There seem to be:

    1) Edge to Edge High Definition 720p LED Display w/ TrueLife (1366x768)
    2) Edge-to-Edge HD+ Widescreen WLED LCD (1600x900)
    3) Edge-to-Edge FHD Widescreen WLED LCD (1920x1080)
    4) Edge-to-Edge FullHD Widescreen RGBLED LCD (1920x1080)

However, the WLED LCD versions (1600x900 and 1920x1080) seem to be not 16" in size but rather just 15.6", while the 720p LED Display w/ TrueLife and RGBLED LCD (1366x768 and 1920x1080 respectively) are 16" in size. Is this correct? If so:

    - Why are some of these screen smaller than the others?
    - Are the quality of the screens 1,2 and 3 all the same execept for the 4th, the RGBLED version?
    - Some people review that the RGBLED LCD is phenomenal, while others state that has inferior contrast ratio than the regular WLED models?

Where are we in all of this and why is Dell making these choices so complacated as far as names, screen sizes and features?...

I personally went to a Dell retailer and saw a model featuring the Edge to Edge High Definition 720p LED Display w/ TrueLife (1366x768), which I assume is a WLED model though its not stated as such. I have to say, albeit the low resolution, image quality, color depth, contrast ratio and viewing angles are among the best Ive seen on any display currently on the market.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Yes this is correct and has been confirmed. The 720p screen is WLED indeed. So there are 720p (16''),900p (15.6'') and 1080p (15.6'') with white led backlighting and an 16'' 1080p with RGBLED. AFAIK the 720p and 1080p are very good quality (haven't seen the 900p one but I assume it's the same) and the RGBLED is, well, exceptional (in a good way) :). However it is a wide gamut display which could result in reduced contrast and some color inaccuracies as reported by some users.

As for the other questions you should really ask Dell why they decided to offer so many choices, personally I like having choices, so I see it as a good thing. (I have a SXPS 16 with the 15.6 1080p on its way).

Ahhhh... OK, thank you very much for the information :) I agree with you that having so many choices is as a good thing. I just wished the naming between the displays was more consistent and that all sizes were plain 16".

I was totally blown away by the 1366x768 display. I have a brand new MacBook Pro 17" (unfortunately I should say because I positively hate Macs and OSX but need them for work), and I have to say the Dell's display blows the Mac out of the water. Its probably the most well lit, uniform and vibrant LCD panel Ive ever seen on a laptop to my memory. For someone that does Video and Photography, i cannot express my surprise when I first glanced at the 1640's screen. Kudos for Dell. The XPS 16 is a beatifully made laptop, and at least as far as the display goes, its truly a wonderful site :) I would LOVE to see the RGBLED display. If the colors are even better than on this unit, darn! :)

After seeing the off colors on my RGBLED screen, I've been thinking about getting the 1080p WLED instead. Can you comment on how they compare? Thanks a bunch!

i "had" RGBLED for some few weeks. i thought it was amazing BUT i didnt got the colours 100% accurate.......
anyway, i called DELL support and they replaced it with a brand new WLED screen......and like i said. its very very good.

basicly, its easier to set all colours properly, it also drink less battery. so until they sort everything out with the RGBLED, im very pleased with this FullHD WLED screen ;)

Most people are getting the RGB screen colors set up quite nicely after some fine tuning. The OVERWHELMING response to the RGB screen has been it's terrific. And I'm not knocking KSMB, he was unhappy with his. But be sure to look at the totality of opinions when making a judgement. Everybody perceives colors and hues differently.

I second that: I LOVE my WLED FullHD screen! However, I have never seen the RGBLED one.

    Thx for the info..
I ordered the xps 16 with the WLED but haven't put my hands on it yet!! one month to go..

From your comments I feel no regret for having taken the WLED. :)

first of all..........£300 (is a lot of money),
second..........is it worth it to get just "more" colours, (and still quite difficult to set properly) ????

well, i decided it was more worth to get the WLED....it still very good :)

edit.....i still think RGB is amazing, (and it will be even more amazing when its full working)

If price were not an issue, would you choose the RGBLED or the WLED? Which has more accurate colors in your opinion?

I'm not concerned about price, but rather color accuracy. I've had the RGBLED screen and frankly don't care for the off colors. To me the "RGBLED" and "100% color gamut" mean nothing if the colors/saturation is way off. I'll take the WLED if it's colors seem better.

I've seen the RGB in best buy and currently have a 1366x768 720p WLED (because of a serious dell fkup) I haven't seen them side by side, but the WLED looks absolutely crystal clear, I work in the IT dept at my school and work on 10-15 laptops a day, have never seen anything as clear as my WLED.. for me the decision on screen went out the window when I bought a 46" samsung 1080p LCD in april, but better battery life with the wled and, with knowing the RGB would probably be better side by side, was it $250 better.. my answer was hell no, but to each his own

well. all screens cant be perfect. common sense i guess.

overall. i believe WLED have more accurate colours after been using them both :)
