    Hi,

This is a newb question: My 1640 now has a 7200RPM hard disk. Will I be able to replace/upgrade it in the future with SSD?

    Thanks HerrKaputt.

I wasn't sure if whether hard disks and SSDs are interfaced to the system/motherboard differently or not.

I couldn't find any "1640" model on Dell's site, but most laptops have manuals on their website. Here's the closest I could find, the Dell Studio XPS 16.

Generally, replacing a HDD with an SSD is easy if you know where the HDD is on your system and how to get it off. Just swap them and put all screws again.

^ The model number for the current Studio XPS 16 being offered is Studio XPS 1640. :)

Oh. In that case, the above link explains how to remove the HDD and how to put a new one back. The very same instructions are valid for SSDs.

EDIT: I just noticed that these automatic links overlapped my link. Here it is again:

Nope, they use the same SATA interface as regular hard drives.
