I'm pretty disappointed since the whole reason I bought this computer was for photo editing and the RGB Led screen was just perfect. But the Dell rep tells me that they are no longer offering that screen and that they will be sending me a 15.6 inch WLED.

They are still checking with the dispatch people to make sure that they aren't shipping the RGB Led, but I was wondering what my options were? I'm tempted to ask Dell to give me the Studio 17 instead, since it seems to be one of the last Dell computers to offer the RGB Led.

    Any suggestions? :(

Studio 17 may be your best bet for the RGB unless you feel comfortable sourcing a rgb for your xps 16 and changing it yourself. That's what I'm planning on doing.

If your waiting on an exchange, Dell will give you some type of upgrade for downgrading your screen from the rgb. I would push hard for a ssd 256gb and then change the screen yourself.

Hmm, thanks. How does the Studio 17 compare to the SXPS? I love the idea of a 17.3 inch screen, but what are the downsides?

I would ask for my money back if they couldn't fix the problem or replace the laptop with what was paid for.

You might be right. Has anybody seen the Studio 17 R+GB screen?

I have the 1645 and they also told me the same thing about the RGB LED screen no longer being available with the 1645. I asked for my money back and they said that wasn't possible so I asked to be given another model that came with the RGD LED. After a couple days, they got back to me and said they were sending me an Alienware m17x. Haven't received it yet but hopefully everything works out.

Interesting.I'm not a gamer so I would personally rather not have the Alienware, but I'm happy for you.

I guess what I'm wondering is whether a Studio 17 configured with a B+RG screen is superior to a Studio 16 configured with a 15.4 WLED...

If that's the case, I will try to push Dell to give me a Studio 17 as a replacement. For me, the screen is the most important component in the laptop.

I am in this same situation myself, I am getting my 1640 replaced with another 1640 without my RGB screen. But what I was told is that they are still available just not shipping with the system and was told, that as soon as my system gets to me call tech support and they have notated that they replace the wled with an rgb screen.

That's a good idea. The only thing that might be of note, however, is that it will likely be a refurb screen rather than a new one (at least that's what my Dell rep said). I might try this WLED and see how I like it before phoning Dell and asking them to send out a RGB Led.

The 16" RGBLED is still available as an option here in Australia.....

Not so sure why they repealed this option in the states. I had an RGBLED screen for awhile and even moving to the standard 1080p screen was a kick in the pants. Either they should refund you a few hundred dollars, or source a computer with the screen.

I was in the same situation.

RGB or nothin'. At the time it was either the M6500 or The M17X.

    They sent me this M17.

    Same specs or better.

    DO NOT settle for less.

Good Luck, and let us know how everything works out.

Rather than downgrade to the Studio 17; you could manually swap the screen yourself as long as your current screen is still working good. It's pretty easy to unscrew the hinges and get the hood off, that's all you gotta do...

Is the Studio 17 really a downgrade though? It would have the same specs as my current xps - so 6gb RAM, i5, 300 gb hard drive - along with the better screen (B+RG). Maybe I just don't know, but what will be inferior about the Studio 17?

I'm not a gamer so an Alienware system doesn't interest me.

So is the RGBLED not coming back for sure? Or do you guys think that we may have to wait a while for it to come back.

Studio 17 with B+RG vs. Studio XPS 16 with WLED? If configured with the same specs, which is the better notebook? Is the superior screen on the Studio 17 enough to bring it up to par with the xps?

maybe it will work for you i guess, it has downgraded graphics, WiFi, and Bluetooth, among other things I'm sure. It's just not as powerful.

Ya I ended up phoning Dell and requesting that the replacement be a 1647. I am pretty bummed that the RGB Led screen seems to have disappeared, but hopefully I will be able to get an i7 or a ssd out of them as compensation.
