Can't find any mention of the 1730 on the Dell website. Is a new product from Dell typically only ordered by phone on the day of it's release? I'm more curious as to whether the photos are legit. If so, not interested.

Due to industry wide shortages of display screens, colored lids, wireless n cards and assembly screws the 1730 will be delayed until October 10th. Then October 31st. Then November 12th....

I talked to an XPS rep earlier today, but of course they had no information, but said she would email me when it became available. I want to order my 1720, but waiting for official pics of the 1730.

Today i recieved pictures and technical data on the M1730.

It is looking a lot better than the pictures that has been floating around the net lately. You can get the M1730 in four different colours. Karmosin Red, Saphire Blue, Bone white and Smoke grey.

I dont know how insert a picture. It asks for a http adress?!?
If someone know where i can upload a picture, tell me.

I am going to order the Smoke grey today.

And it has got DUAL M8700GT in SLI. It is an awesome machine with very few competitors on the market.

    Cheerio!!

Sapphire blue? I'm interested in how that looks, This midnight blue is to "Midnight "for me but considering the 1730 will cost twice as much I'll probably won't get it.

Yes thats right! At my work we recieved order forms from Dell today with pictures and tech data on the new 1730 among other new models. I believe XPS 420 is also a new model but maybe i am wrong. Anyway, I was either going to buy the Toshiba Satellite X205 (X200 here in Sweden) or the new Dell M1730. When i saw the pictures on the not yet released M1730 i phoned Dell two seconds later asking them if this was correct. Their reply was: Companies with home PC agreement can order it starting today, private persons have to wait until the last week of September. Shipment is expected to be week 44. That the last week of October.

Any option for dual 512MB cards?

    Live pictures?

Fingers well crossed that some how looks more like

    and a lot less like

I'm just finding the first pic really cool, quite futuristic - like it belongs to a transformer or something. :p The second one looks like it was the result of too many beers.

Not too keen on the other sets of pictures...just the first one (of this post)

No problem, Registered...be sure to let us know what you find out.

I could live with dual 256MB cards but would definitely go dual 512MB if available.

Also hafta agree with the general consensus...it look WAY better in these latest pics than what was being floated around the past couple of weeks!

I'd be willing to bet it's more like your first picture there where the carbon fiber texture is super faint compared to how it's showing up in the photos. Not nearly as bad as I though it'd be. Late September order / October delivery is a deal killer for me. The longer I have to wait, the closer we get to 8800M's.

Probably just gonna grab a Tosh X205 now and skip waiting 3-4 months on something that may take even longer than expected (which is the rule rather than the exception).

Oh no! Don't say that! I'll end up getting stuck in another circle of "I'll wait for the better one to come out".

Won't it be a while before 8800M for notebooks becomes available? At least for Dell anyways, right?

If the details/live pics of the 1730 aren't to my liking I'll probably jump ship back to the 1710 (oh if only I could get the sager 5790 in the uk  ). If I do like the 1730, I'll wait for it and continue using my vaio till it's available.

why pay 200 extra dollars for an upgrade you wont use, the more important part is the two GPU's 512 mem is more than enough, 1GB is overkill and a waste of money

Why would they use 2 256MB is there a performance gain using 2x256MB in SLi over just using one 512MB? I mean maybe there is but I can't see there being anything major at all if anything. I think thats just a waste might as well put 2x512MB, maybe heat consumption was an issue.

It's not just two sets of memory, it's two graphic processors as well. It's all just contained on one physical card so that there's only one interface between the two graphics units and the motherboard. This will leave open another MXM slot for the physics card.

What would really be sweet is if you could ditch the physics card and drop in another card with 2x 8700 GPU's and memory on it and SLI the two double cards together for a grand total of quad 8700M GTs each with 256MB DDR3. The heat would be ginormous and there'd have to be some sort of super SLI support on the motherboard to use two sets of two together.

the grey one looks the best IMO, i am pretty sure they will look a lot better in person,

but from what i have seen so far is that its a lot thicker than the 1720 and much heavier... now i don't like that

So I'm guessing that improves power, what I'm confused on is why not put two 512 on one slot? Would it not fit or something like why gimp the PC is such a way?

Ya, the first one is CG. I was just hoping that the live pics would look more like that.

I hope so. Like the 1710, users have said it looks better in person (it looks ugly on dell's site). Live pics from users of the 1710 showing it at new angles - it looks really good.

From a GPU memory perspective, I think 1024MB's (dual 512MB) would definitely be used to the max in a lot of games at high-resolution with all the eye-candy turned on.

I'm wondering if offering only dual 256MB is an attempt by Dell to simplify driver issues down the road. Given that this not the standard SLI setup with two cards in two slots, perhaps it's an attempt to make it look like a mega-overclocked single 8700 card with 512MB as far as the driver is concerned.

I've seen many complaints from the Alienware M9750 owners due to the lack of driver support since it uses a similar proprietary SLI setup of dual 7950's in a single slot (and these are dual 512MB cards).

SLI doesn't combine total GPU RAM......effectively you still only have 256mb or VRAM to use, granted the pixels get pushed faster but w/ a wuxga screen I could easily see 256mb cards being week.
