I had originally planned on an Envy 14, but I ended up going with the Dell for reasons of no Radiance Screen and reported heat issues, I specifically did not order an extended warranty because I repair my own systems and others on a daily basis and I take a lot more care doing it than the average Dell technician does.

Was close to buying an Alienware M15x at almost twice the price, similar spec just a beefier GPU... Still not sure if I made the right decision (but I made the financially-sensible one...). Got a desktop for serious gaming, so as long as the XPS can handle a bit of medium-detail WoW and SC2, I'll be happy.

 

Reviews seem to show that even the GT 420M can do high-detail in WOW pretty well, I would think the 435 would do great.

 

My first delivery date was 14/11 but I cancelled and reordered to take advantage of the free upgrade on the HDD. New EDD is 24/11

 

I've gone for the 1920x1080 screen though - which is about twice the number of pixels of the more common 720p-ish screens. So I'm still kind of expecting a mobile GPU to struggle at the native resolution...

Thanks, Im assuming that the gt 420 is cool in the case of the(my) 14 inch model?

 

The documentation for the 14 only mentions Intel HD graphics, so I guess that's a yes. No mention of the 420.

good find with the link to the documentation. Something I found in the documentation (atleast for the 14 inch model) it makes reference to a touchscreen..... was there an option i missed?

 

It says the touchscreen is optional. And it's not available in current configurations

It should be 'approved' by your credit card company just after you place your order, but the amount won't actually be taken until just before the laptop ships. However, it will immediately come off your credit limit- so if place your order today for $500, this will immediately come off the available credit on the card (you'll have $500 less to spend). If the laptop ships on 15th November, the transaction will show up on your statement around the 15th November (and not before)

At least that's the way it usually works here in the UK.

I choose the 420 with Optimus cause I wanted to get some good batt life while on the road.. hope my choice pays off.. and if I needed to I'm sure there's a way to over clock the Nvidia, hence making it as fast as the 425M

25th October.. My ETA was originally early December.. I gave Dell a call and had a moan about having to wait over a month.. and the laptop was shipped the next day

 

Haha - I called Dell today and representative offered me to switch my original common 4-7day delivery to 1-day delivery with no additional charge =) . So far: my order is placed 2010-10-22, EDD 2010-11-15 (3 days less than before the call)

 

What is this? I ordered three days before you did and got stuck with a late November EDD. I guess I'll have to follow suit.

No need for the sarcastic emoticon, I'm not sure if you're trying to be snide, but I don't appreciate the rude gesture.

I did call during my lunch break, and the representative I talked to said it will be on an 'expedited' list. Whether there is such a thing or not, he was the first representative that was helpful and informative. Too bad I couldn't get this kind of support when I had issues with the M101z and that Latitude L400 about a decade ago. Regardless, so far so good.

Just gave it a try on my 17" order. No luck. I even said that HP's EDD was much sooner and that I might have to look into canceling my order and getting an HP. Didn't seem to be anything they could do. My EDD is the 18th, and I placed my order on the 23rd.

My order no longer has an EDD, presume it has been cancelled and re-ordered.. lets hope it will show up with a date earlier than the 22/10 it was before

I would call again and see if you have better luck with another rep. It seems to be a hit and miss when it comes to Dell representatives.

 

Just as a matter of interest, why did you upgrade from Home Premium to Ultimate?

 

full disk encryption. I guess i could have used truecrypt but i like the simplicity.

 

Tried again, struck out again. They are going to call me in 2-3 days to update me on my order status, but no escalation.
