Was wondering if anyone else had attempted to run the Windows 10 Preview on one of these new machines. I immediately installed and have been running into a number of issues, most of which I can deal with. However the inability to get an Intel HD graphics driver to stick seems to be major downfall. Has anyone else made a run at this and if so to what success?

Dellienware Workstations & Ultrabooks
That issue is addressed in the thread for Win 7. No intel driver!
-
I can't control brightness at all. This made me uninstall immediately.
-
I would be interested how the scaling works and if you can finally set different scaling for internal and external display (i.e. 150% for internal screen and 100% for external screen) - so that you dont have to close all your running apps and log out every time you do that...
-
Looks like a new intel hd graphics driver was released that addressed issues. Anyone have a chance to test?

RE: Windows 10--if I upgrade to Windows 10 when it's released later this year, how will I be able to do a fresh install of Windows without having to buy another license? I ask because I like to reinstall Windows every 2-3 years to keep my computer snappy and free up drive space.
EDIT: I think this page answers my question: http://www.dell.com/support/Article/us/en/19/DSN_347576/EN -
You can. Just change it under power settings, advanced, display brightness. -
I too have the same problem. Can't get the Intel HD Graphics 5500 driver working. I've modified the igdlh64.inf file to allow installation of the driver (because it's explicitly prohibited in the "Threshold" section) but it came to a hash calculation error. :-(
Let me know if you find anything useful.

Just run Windows 10 TP as a VM...
-
Thank you for your suggestion. I already have VMs with TP.
But for many reason, VM are not really an option. VM will allow only testing of a fraction of what you can test with a real machine. With my other laptops I've already submit bug/feedback for things that wouldn't have been possible inside a VM due to hardware abstraction.
- Hyper-V (you can't run an hyper-visor inside an hyper-visor)
- Wifi configuration panel
- DPI scaling configuration
- ...
I need more than visual testing, so having received my XPS13, I would really like to make Windows 10 my "production" machine to "Help make Windows 10 better" as they say
HD Graphics 5500 is pretty new, I hope MS or Intel will solve the issue promptly! -
Got the video driver installed.
Take a look at this post. Parts 2 and 3 are all you need to do.
https://communities.intel.com/message/261938
- Modifying the first line in the Windows 8.1 setup section header to [IntelGfx.NTamd64.6.4]
- Restarting in Windows Troubleshoot mode to allow installation of drivers not digitally signed -
-
Gonna give this a shot now. Thanks for the update! -

I actually managed to get the Intel driver installed on Windows 10. Don't reboot into safe mode, you need to reboot into the mode that disables driver signature verification, it's in the same menu.
After installing the driver, the Windows UI became fast again, non-laggy. However, I couldn't play any videos (not on youtube, nor media player classic, etc.) or games. Also one item was still showing as problematic in the Device Manager, I forgot what it was but can someone confirm they have that as well?
I have since reverted back to Windows 8.1, hopefully someone else will solve the puzzle, or Intel will.
If anyone needs it, here is the contents of my igdlh64.inf file in the Graphics directory of the unzipped intel driver directory: http://pastebin.com/uWBiqQkE
Let me know how it goes! -
I just reinstalled Windows 10 after learning Microsoft released a couple of hotfixes. To my surprise, the Intel HD 5500 graphics driver installed and the display brightness keys worked...

Great news! Any other problems with the current Win10 install?
-
I want to know this as well, I made copy of the factory restore image last night and am thinking of installing Windows 10 on my XPS. Is there any firmware related stuff that I need to be aware of, is there a way of getting the Dell power plans back after the install?
-
You will loose McAfee and will not be able to reinstall since McAfee does not offer a Win 10 version. The only "bug" I noticed was in IE when using the google search add-on, the search would crash and it would ask you to refresh the search. I removed the add-on and use Bing instead.
If you have any specific question I can answer, please ask.

Thanks for that. How did you revert back to Windows 8.1? Also do you just install W10 over the current OS partition and all the drivers install from Windows update?
Not concerned about McAfee as I uninstalled that straightway.
Why did you revert back to W8, I have it installed on my desktop as a dual boot and have found that I don't use it much as I can't be asked to replicate everything from W8, but wouldn't mind doing that on the laptop. Was it due to instability or bugs? I think W10 would be a great user experience on the XPS. -
I installed W10 the first time shortly after I received my xps13. At the time, 9926 did not support the HD5500 driver so I rolled back to w8.1. As reported in an earlier thread, I could not adjust screen brightness and youtube would not play back properly. The 2nd time I installed/rolled-back, I tried to get W10 working properly with the latest HD5500 driver for W8.1.
Win10 release 9926 appears to be pretty stable. -
Just installed Windows 10 Preview for the first time, build 10441. Anyone have issues browsing the web? With IE and Chrome, both have trouble with a lot of websites. I would even try to go to google.com and the browser will hang and say it needs recovering. A few websites will start working after recovering a few times, but many others do not, such as google.com. Anyone else have this issue?
-
I've been using Windows 10 Preview, build 10049 for a few days now. I don't have any problems with web browsing in either Chrome or IE. Also, the Intel graphics drivers are now on Windows Update and working without any issues. The only major problem I have is that the microphone is not working and the system crashes when you try to access the microphone settings in the control panel.
-
I have been running Win 10 for a few weeks here are the issues I have encountered (build 1049):
Touchpad does not work at the log on screen, the keyboard and the touchscreen do so there is no problem logging in. The touchpad does work during the lockscreen but stops if you go to the switch user option.
No issue with Chrome however I do get the issues described above with Spartan and IE.
No tried the microphone yet so will give that a go.
I have had a few instances where I have left Word running and closed the lid only to open it again for Windows not to resume I just get a grey screen where you can move the mouse around. Once or twice it did resume but a few times it didn't. Not leaving word open seem to minimise this issue. -
New build available 10061, downloading now will report back later but apparently does have a issue where you can't launch desktop applications from the start menu.
