3 questions after new Vista install on M1330

    Hi!

I recently reinstalled Vista on my 3 months old M1330, because I got the feeling I might have caught a virus or something. Anyhow, I got the feeling the system behaves a little strangely.

    So, now my questions:

    1) Why does Vista Update install about 400 MB of updates first BEFORE it goes to the Servicepack 1? Isn't that a culmulative install and shouldn't it therefore contain all previous updates? I ask this mainly because my Vista install was done on sunday, and only now on Wednesday does it seem to have gotten all updates. And there was no way to accelerate this. It's insane that only after 3 days the system is up to date.

    2) I have the feeling with the new install my hard disk is slower, or at least way busier and not as responsive as it used to be. It's only a feeling, and I can't prove that with numbers. But: what's the best tool to check if the HD is okay? I have the Hitachi Travelstar 7K200. Could it be that the Vista install chose a stupid "cluster size" for the partition (I deleted the old Vista partition, and let it create a new one) or something like that?

    3) When I close the lit of my notebook, the system used to go into sleep. But with the new install sometimes it rather goes into hibernate instead. I know this would be normal if the battery is rather empty, but even with a full battery it's doing this. I checked the setting and it should make the computer sleep when closing the lit.

Okay, that's it. Really bothers me. Thanks for any kind of help!

Here the specs for my notebook: XPS M1330, T8300 2,4GHz CPU, 3GB memory, 200GB 7.200rpm Hitachi HD, LED screen, Vista Home Premium.

    Cheers

    Matthias

    1) I can totally understand your situation. But that's the way it is. I don't know how to speed it up or take any shortcuts. I just install everything until SP1 shows up.

    2) I think it's slower cause you just installed so many updates and have not defragmented the computer HDD. Clean up your HDD and defragment it. That should help.

    3) I advise you to try reset the settings.

    Hi!

Thanks so much for these tips. I already defragmented the HD with JKDefrag right now, and I'll see how that feels during everyday work. Also I will reset the settings for power saving.

A general question: If I'd have to reinstall Vista in the future, is it advisable to stay offline (and avoid automated updates) and do the following things: install Vista, install Dell drivers, THEN install previously downloaded SP1 and THEN go online? Would that mess up the system, or could I really save update time this way?

    Cheers
