Like the title reads, would it be possible to install a 3D LCD panel onto the non-3D 1080P L702X ?
I'm loving my 1080P AG LCD but I seeing as how you can order the 3D screen for $150... it's something I might look into in the future, if it's possible. I know the 3D L702X does NOT have opitmus and mine does...

I believe Scott on these boards put a 120Hz screen into an Optimus system and got it running fine WITH Optimus, WI-DI, etc. But don't hold me to that, I'll wait for him and others to chime in. I agree it would be nice as you could get the 3D and still have Optimus.

there is a little more involved than simply switching the lcd in order to get 3D

Yeah, you also need the IR transmitter and matching 3D bezel that has the IR "window". From a hardware standpoint I think that's all that should be required.

i was pretty sure that the motherboards are different, otherwise dell would have been able to simply 'add' the 3d lcd, ir transmitter and bezel to the non-3d l702x to fix the no optimus on the 3d model

The optimus with 3d problem is because of the way optimus works. Whether you're using the dedicated graphics or the integrated, it all displays to the internal screen through the intel screen buffer (which can't handle 3d). If you use an external monitor then there's nothing to stop you from using 3d.

yes i realize all of that the point i was trying to make is that the OP seems to think he can simply add a '3D' LCD and change a non-3D l702x to a 3D one and i'm pretty sure the motherboards are different

there is a thread here http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/565026-inside-l702x-fhd-3d-1080p-display-panel-assembly.html

so it may be possible i dunno

If you're looking to install the 3D panel just for better image quality, look into getting an AUO B173HW01 V.4 instead. That's the B+RGLED equivalent for 17" (as in, the one that Dell should have used)
