    Hi,

I know I should of recognised this later, but my L701X arrived about a week ago, but it has a software installed for Nvidia 3D vision, and it says its not a Wled Screen it says it's a LVDS laptop display screen? do other people have this?

I'm not sure what your question about 3D is, but the display on the laptop is not stereoscopic 3D capable. You can connect the laptop to a 3D TV/monitor and with the right software view 3D movies or play 3D games.

Since the l702xs will come with a 3D screen would it be possible to put one of those in and see if it works, at the moment I can get to an error message that says this screen is not 3D Capable, so maybe it could be possible with a 3D ready 17" screen?

The only difference in the 702x's screen is that there's a 1080 model [similar to the current XPS 15's].

Not sure the 445M supports this - the 702x comes with a 450M model; you'd have to check if the GPU is able to. My suspicion is that it can't.

    LCD options are as follows:
    1. 17.3" 3D LCD, 1920x1080, TrueLife glossy panel, White-LED (to be provided with 3D shutter glasses).
    2. 17.3" 2D LCD, 1600x900, TrueLife glossy panel, White-LED.
    3. 17.3" 2D LCD, 1600x900, TrueLife glossy panel, White-LED, with Multi Touch screen (to be provided with digitizer).

    GPU/Motherboard options are as follows:
    1. NVIDIA GT 440M 1GB, 2 RAM slots, with 3D support.
    2. NVIDIA GT 440M 1GB, 2 RAM slots, without 3D support.
    3. NVIDIA GT 450M 3GB, 2 RAM slots, without 3D support.
    4. NVIDIA GT 450M 3GB, 4 RAM slots, with 3D support (only offered with 4-core CPU).

So, yes, it'll be a hard-wired GPU choice - two models with/without 3D support, nothing to do with the screen?

    Update:

If you install the 266.58 drivers on the 445M 3gig model, it reports "3D vision driver 266.58 installed".

Unless this is nothing to do with 3D vision.. how the hell is Dell going to enforce a non-3D card version? Simply by not including it in the driver?

    Hmm

so technically speaking since there is a 3D vision driver, even if dell try to force it off we could use a modified driver both dell + nvidia + a 3D screen 1290 x 1080 & Nvidia glasses, technically this is possible?

I'm not sure why you think they're stopping you from using 3D.... they openly advertise that it's 3D capable as long as you have a 3D screen to run it through.

But what you're saying now is that you've bought a L701 and now you want to make actually play in 3D?... I would think it's definately possible... but I wouldn't. I am almost certain you won't be able to get a 3D ready screen replacement very cheap as I doubt there are many out there at the moment. Also the glasses won't be cheap, they were £100 each for my TV and NVIDIA will be able to charge what ever they want for them.

The L701x can play 3D currently, if you hook it up to a 3D monitor and play a 3D BluRay disk. This means the GPU is capable of running 3D.

I would think that getting a 3D capable screen placed in exchange of the basic one would enable the machine to display 3D without the need of a 3D external screen. I could be wrong too though.

What are you planning to watch in 3D on a 17" screen?

Um, they are offering a config choice without 3D "support". Whatever that means. The implication is that you need to chose the 1080p screen option (which isn't even being offered at launch, according to Dell) and either option #1 or #4 on your GPU to run 3D applications.

I suspect that when the 702x model is launched, we'll be seeing a thread labeled "how to make your 702x non-3D model play 3D" ;)

Buy SAMSUNG SSG-2100AB/XC 3D GLASSES | SAMSUNG 3D GLASSES - Other TV Accessories | Comet

£61 for a branded model from a major retailer - I suspect you can get generic ones for much less if you shop around.

There's two differing market standards at the moment (oh, how oh how the technological industry loves to pick two models, with one becoming extinct.. talk about silliness) - it would be advisable to find out which version are usable on the screen / BluRay player before buying them ;)

I suspect it's for those games, he'll have to say though ;)

My guess: the 3d support motherboards use a different LVDS cable the support the increaded bandiwdth.

The biggest question seems to be will you able to just swap in a 3d display on the original 17 and have 3d capabilities. I hope no one takes the chance and it doesn't work, although that seems to be the only way to know for sure.

WLED is a backlight, LVDS is an interface (like DVI). Your screen is both. Neither have anything to do on whether it supports 3D or not. To support 3D you need a 120Hz panel. I'm not sure if the 701 has that or not.

The "3d support" will just be if it has a 3d capable panel (ie 120Hz) so i'd assume that as the current L701x can run 3D on an external monitor then if you replaced the 900p 60Hz panel with a 1080p (or whatever) 120Hz panel then it would "support 3D".
Also probably need to use the Nvidia drivers not dells

thats what I wanted to know, however this current laptop is on the business at the moment, I could just buy another laptop with 3D screen on the go for personal use.
