Finally bit the dust. After one hard drive fail and the replacement of the motherboard plus GPU a couple years ago, my beloved xps decided not to turn on this morning.......stupid failing motherboard.

Anyone else still using a XPS1530? I need to buy a new laptop in the next 24 hours.

So I've purchased a new HP Envy and I need to transfer various documents, pictures, music etc from the HD of my now defunct XPS to my new computer. How would I go about doing this?

best bet is to buy an external drive enclosure, pull the HDD from your XPS and put it in. then you can mount the external drive like any other external hard disk in Windows - copy and paste files as needed.

Does anyone know whether my xps hard-drive is 2.5 or 3.5? Also, would have a USB port or an eSATA port?

If you're pulling the hard drive from a desktop then it'll be 3.5", if it's from a laptop then it'll be 2.5". Also, no you hard drive will not have an eSATA or USB port. It'll either have a SATA or PATA connector, depending on how old it is.

Still have my XPS M1530 here. I have a handful of friends that have had theirs fail though. Mine was running really hot lately, but cleaning the dust out of the heatsink/fan assembly helped improve my TF2 performance and lower CPU and GPU temps immensely.

How the hell did you manage to get 1920x1200 with your current GPU? And did you remove the heatsink/fan to clean out the dust? :D

    All M1530 GPU will support 1920 x 1200... even 945 IGP can already output 1920 x 1200.

My M1530 came with a 1920x1200 display. It was a factory Dell upgrade toward the end of the M1530 life cycle (after the 45nm Penryn update).

I did not remove the heatsink/fan to clean out the dust. I simply removed the plastic piece that is over it, and used compressed air to shoot the dust out of the vents in the back. Lots of dust seemed to be stuck in the heatsink (even though it was not visible on initial inspection). My M1530 went from downclocking and hitting 90 C on the GPU, to now hitting somewhere in the 70 C range in games. Also idle temps went from the 50s for the CPU to the mid 30s.

How did you pull that one off? Are they going to repair it or send you a new laptop?
