Hey I'm trying to choose betwee these two RAM kits for my L502x:

    Amazon.com: CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 1600MHz PC3 12800 Laptop Memory(CMSX8GX3M2A1600C9): Computers & Accessories

    Amazon.com: Corsair Vengeance Laptop Memory Kit 16 GB (2x8 GB) DDR3 1600MHz CL10 PC3 12800 (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10): Computers & Accessories

I am going to upgrade to a Crucial M4 256GB SSD and one of these RAM kits.

I don't know if I need 16GB, but I know I want to upgrade from the 4GB I currently have.

I'm concerned about the hibernation file for the 16GB kit taking up too much room on my SSD.

My question is will I ever use all of the 16GB?

I mainly use laptop for browsing the net, 30+ tabs at a time, light gaming and some video editing of H.264 720p video files.

The extra 8GB taken up by the 16GB kit over the 8Gb kit is an extra 8GB of video files I could have on the SSD.

There probably won't be a noticable difference between CL9 and CL10?

Thanks in advance for any opinions...

8GB is more than sufficient for most people's needs currently, and your's. Out of those two options, the 8GB kit is best partly due to the lower timings compared to the 16GB (CL9 vs CL10)

You can manually reduce the pagefile to 1GB, which is plenty when you already have 8GB. (It's never a good idea to remove in entirely).

Thanks, I'm gonna go for the 8GB and spend the $70 dollar difference on something else, cheers for the advice!

Oops thanks for pointing that out - OP you should still reduce the pagefile, but if you are still concerned:

    Open elevated cmd and type:

powercfg -h -size [percentage of RAM to allocate to the hiberfile.sys]

I put mine at 60% - because I would rarely be using 4.8GB of RAM when it goes into hibernation (and that's only when the battery level would be critical)

    So I save 3.2GB! :)

You can also disable it entirely if you think you won't be using hibernation:

    powercfg -h off

That's interesting. I've got 16GB, so I may want to adjust the percentage a bit ;)

If you don't ever use the hibernation, you can turn it off and get that HDD space back (16GB back for 16GB RAM, etc).

Hey thanks folks, I do use hibernation a lot now, that might change when I put in the SSD!

I'm gonna go with the 8GB kit and I'll prob reduce the hibernation file just to try it, cheers!

Very true, I always used hibernate on my old laptop, but no real need with the fast boot of an SSD.
