I was thinking about going 8gb ram in my 1730. would i notice any good justifiable increase in games? I know i would need the 64bit os.

You really don't need that much RAM. If you really want it though, you probably could put an entire game on a RAM disk and still have about half to play the game with. But honestly, that much RAM isn't needed now.
-
am using this in my xps m1530, and very happy with it.
-
i hope you're a graphic designer of some sort because 300 bucks can be used to upgrade other things
-
Ive got two of those G Skill 4GB in mine giving me 8GB and they work flawlessly check my sig
-
Nice thanks for the link $299/each - Just ordered two sets.... now will have to wipe and load Vista 64
-
What do you do to need 8gb in a laptop?
-
Not sure what other folks are using it for -- I plan to use with Capture One - Photoshop and LightRoom. $299 - not too bad for 8GB so why not.
-
i dono, i hope you just won the lottery, because you are loaded
-
If you can afford a 3-4k XPS 1730, 300 bucks ain`t that much honestly.
Plus, he said he needs it... -
My 8GB of ram will be used for design and animation work. Basically graphics design in 3D Max etc.....
-
It won't make the games faster unless you are running out of memory while playing the game. More RAM does allow you to go more things at once though.
This is the first time I have seen them doing 8GB laptop kits as more BIOS are locked to less than 8GB. -

Yeah, I thought that they were limited to ~6gb?
-
Apparently this one is not. It does make sense because it is such a beefy system and would have more users that would upgrade to 8GB.
-
Yep - if you are running 64bit and using apps that can take advantage of it why not. I mean if you have to lug around a 10 lb laptop you might as well have max ram

Just got the (2) 1730's in the last few weeks so as of yet have not lugged one on travel. I have been traveling with M170's which are the same weight etc... I use a Brenthaven sholder bag that I hang off a roller so the weight is not an issue. In and out of taxi's - hotel's etc... more to lug but if you want the power its still lighter than packing a desktop
-
With the proper bagpack, you won`t feel the weight.
I mean, sure, you ain`t taking it with you hiking, but for usual transportation, it`s fine.
As long as you`re not a wimp,that is -

Seriously though, I only have the (relatively light in comparison) 1530, but to be honest I think Its a pain in the *** to bring to coll and back..
Bty (Nope, I know what you're thinking, I'm definitely not a lightweight) I ususally have to lug it with one to two coursebooks weighing at least 1-2 kg each.
I'm only worried because I ordered a precision 17 inch before I got used to carrying this, that things going to weigh a tonne! -
The 1730's will stay home more than they will travel that's for sure just due to size/weight... If I had to sholder or back-pack them I don't think I'd ever travel with them. I picked up a few mini's and have another sub 2 lb full carbon fiber Vaio (only avail in Japan - or thru Dynamism) that fits the bill for super light (hate the term netbook). Key for 1730 is that lets say you are in the middle of a really good epic game (Fallout3 comes to mind) and have to go TDY -- well that's when the 1730 will come on travel.
If weight was an issue I'd probably pick up a 1530 and max it out as it seems this will get you a decent performing laptop. -
I dont think 8GB of RAM will give you any more noticable performance over 4GB, not for much of todays games anyway.
-
Agreed - Don't think anyone here thinks Crisis will run any better with 8 under a 64 bit OS. Key is App's that can take advantage like the ones mentioned. What I could use a lot more than 8GB would be more core's... Quad - or 8 would be even better

Having 6-8GB RAM or more will definitely not give or any form in performance increment (whether be it in FPS, quality etc) in games of sorts. That's the job of the GPU and CPU. The RAM can only do much.
The usefulness of having 4-8GB RAM or more are quite beneficial who do graphics and design work that requires alot, and yes I mean alot of memory access, where having just 4GB is not enough.
As usual my Inspiron 1720 is capped at 6GB max, and the chipset/mobo may not be able to handle anymore further. Right now I'm starting to think that 6GB is still isn't enough. I'm changing this thing once Dell releases a new XPS replacement.
