I am pretty sure I am getting the dell xps now but im trying to decide to get the 9 cell battery or not. Is is uncomfortable for anyone while actually in your lap or up at and angle typing or taking with you anywhere like in a case?

If you're considering an XPS, you might also want to consider something else to put it on besides your lap. Its really not something you want on your lap and quite frankly the 9-cell battery will raise it up allowing better airflow so that if you absolutely have to have it on your lap it might be the only thing keeping your system from roasting your man parts. Or lady parts. I had a 9-cell with my 1645 it fit usually in my laptop sleeve in my messenger bag but it depends on the bag/case. Worst case scenario you could remove the battery.

Besides that what Fenikkusu said I find it more comfortable to type when palmrest with keyboard is lifted up a bit.

Can someone tell me the point of the 9 cell battery? If the laptop isnt portable and its always going to be in one spot plugged in then whats the point of having a 9 cell battery?

Just for better ventilation, if you dont want to put a book under your laptop.

When there is blackout? You get 4-6 hour of battery life which can be used for watching movies. There are some people on the net actually got 9 hours battery life time out of 9 cell to watch movies using Intel QuickSync.
This laptop works like a hybrid, allow long battery life when required, and allow high performance in other times, but personally, I seldom put laptop on lap, it is hot!

I see no improvement in temps whether the 9 cell is in or out.. Seeing as the 15 is not very portable to begin with I'd recommend against the 9 cell, but no it's not uncomfortable when in your lap.

I have used both 9-cell and 6-cell and will recommend you to take the 6-cell Because of my observations..
With 9-cell my L501x had gone northwards to 100Degrees Celcius and the Fans stopped working totally
When I had my 6-cell it was great..
Better stick with 6-cell, based on my observations

If you get the i7 and 555 GPU you're forced to upgrade to the 9-cell battery.

I have used both 9cell and 6cell for awhile and the only thing I liked about the 9cell is longer battery life, and the raised angle feels better for typing and ventilation(can also be done with a 6cell easily, though).

I rarely put laptops on my lap, but when I do, the 9cell feels less comfortable. Also not the best idea if you use a sleeve instead of backpack/messenger bag, feels awkward to carry.

Any 17" laptop is not all that portable to begin with. If you need something to put on your lap on a regular basis I'd get the XPS 15 at most or a 15z. The new Lenovo 13" Ultrabook is pretty good too. My XPS 17 does travel with me all the time but it's never on my lap.

I was kind of annoyed when I got the 17" and it was big and heavy. So it stays on my desk. I wanted to get a lighter smaller non XPS laptop but all of the 15" only had crappy 720p screens. I want a 1080p screen which is why I chose the XPS 17" as even the Insperon 17" only had crappy 900p screens. Don't understand why 1080p are not standard. Items are not small as some say and I can fit more than one window on the screen.
