my old laptop had buttons separate from the trackpad so i rested a thumb on the left click button whilst trackpadding with my index, which i thought was a pretty normal way to use a trackpad.... but doing this on the 9560 causes problems cause the button IS PART of the trackpad :( can the button part of the trackpad be turned off?

Not as far as I know, but just practice not doing that anymore. You'll get used to it.
