The previous Studio XPS 1640/1645 + ATi 4670 Owner's Thread was getting too large and slowing down forum search, so this is the new thread.

Original Link to the first Studio XPS 1640/1645 + ATi 4670.

    Thanks!

Yay! Does anyone know if the CPU and the GPU are sharing the same heatsink in this laptop?

there is a new review on studio 16 @notebookcheck.net
its very technical and comprehensive, covers everything including ssd tests,
with the only exception of rgb led screen which was covered heavily last year.
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Dell-Studio-XPS-16-ATI-HD4670-Notebook.21440.0.html
gpu is "one gigabyte of video memory of type DDR3 ", not gdrr3.
nope, 2 seperate heatsinks connected to one fan.

"The graphic chip has one gigabyte of video memory of type DDR3 in the tested configuration at hand. In comparison to GDDR3 video memories, the normal DDR3 modules are considerably cheaper, but also a bit slower. Moreover, ATI states a maximum power consumption of around 30W for the chip."

mmmm.. WHAT? everywhere i read about 4670 in sxps 16 it was a clear fact it has GDDR3 and not ddr2/ddr3/other crap. gpu-z shows gddr3 too. with that type of memory (ddr2/3) i think it would suck in all performance tests, but that's not the case. so how the hell this tester thinks for so sure its a crappy ddr3 vram? :S

I recognized that the the test model have 5 rows of vents, while mine only have 4 (I have 3670). Do all models equipped with HD4670 have 5 rows of individual vents?

Take a look at this picture:

    Compared to this:

It seems to me that they've made an improvement to the cooling system, allowing more heat to escape upward when screen is fully opened.

i have 2 studio 16s, the black lid with ati3670 has 4 rows,
the white lid with ati4670 has 5 rows.
    well, its an improvement.

as far as im concerned, mine scores 6770 on 3d06 mark, its very good for a 128 bit mid range card.

If the white one has a different cooling system, we should claim Dell to replace ours. Someone please call support and ask what's going on!

i don't even know how to tell that for sure.. maybe if u disassemble it and look the memory's id.
all the programs i tried say gddr3. btw this memory is clocked at an effective clock of 1600 mhz. i didn't even heard of a simple ddr3 memory that has this speed, only like 1333..

Got the P8600 too and 5 rows. Ive had the system since the 18th of sept. To be honest ive had a look at the system and the only dif seems to be that piece of plastic overing the vent, which is easily removed.

It literally just clicks and slides out when the battery is out, so i cant imagine it would be a big ordeal to get dell to change it or to do it urself if they send ya it(thats doubtful though).

Definity worth havin id say, to get a bit more hot air out!!

I asked this is another thread, but no one cared to show any 'proof' that it was GDDR3. Now, with this new review, one kinda gets worried... Do they use sometimes use DDR3, sometimes GDDR3?

And for the cooling, do they sometimes have 4 rows instead of 5 rows for cooling...? Inconsistent Dell.

Ya i had to take it off after my laptop had its fall. That particular part popped out. Fortunately didnt break and was able to slide it back in.

If you place the laptop bottom up and take out the battery.
Slide that piece towards where the battery is and itll go about an inch b4 it stops. Then all you gotta do is slide it away from the laptop in the same way/direction u slide the battery out.

Theres no screws or clips and that piece of plastic is quite sturdy so i cant imagine itll will break by sliding it out(well considering mine survived a nasty bang on concrete without breaking) unless you do it wrong.

And also internally i dont see any other difference to my laptops cooling system compared to pictures ive seen of other older systems, bar the 5 slits of course.

If you have trouble downloading it, use Internet Explorer. I couldn't download from dell support page until I tried with internet explorer now it works like a charm.

I tried it after dropping my poor baby on a hardwood floor. Really should have gotten that complete care warranty. Lesson learned. I think it looks better. I know the startup time is now nuts with Windows 7. I really clicked flash and almost 2 minutes later it already rebooted and got to the desktop.

Aside from the new bios there are also new drivers that were put out on the 7th. I am hoping the new touchpad drivers fix some issues with the external mouse and disabling on startup when you DONT have a mouse plugged in..

Edit: I got mine almost a month ago. 5 slots and it's black. Plus the 4670 has GDDR3 memory.

Yes it is GDDR3 and GPU-Z shows temps... my laptop was built the first week of September, it has the 5 rows or whatever... I made a post about it earlier though I didn't know the vents got larger... but from my first sxps16 that was built early august to this one runs much cooler... I've let many people use this laptop and not one person has mentioned anything about heat

I've just joined the owner's club, placed my order yesterday through Dell Australia. When I get the laptop I plan on doing a fresh install with windows vista to get rid of the crapware. Has anyone run into any problems with this, regarding finding drivers etc. Also where is the best place to obtain the windows vista media? I haven't done this before as my previous laptop was just a plain XP install.

    @guru

Alot of people do decide to do a clean install but to be honest it maybe more hassle then its worth.

All the bloatware can be easily removed my the normal add/remove program process. And to be honest theres not alot, compared with other dell computers ive gotten
(god my xps m1210 was packed with all different kinds of sh*t when i first got it)

    Up to you though
