I haven't yet. Didn't realize they would consider combining the higher instant savings and free shipping from Dell Home with the 7% EPP discount. Obviously I missed the $504 off but would be happy with the $404 + 7%.

Quick question. I know this is probably discussed in another thread, but what is the best time to call a sales rep? I'm assuming that anything after 4 PM, gets sent overseas, which would make it harder to strike a better deal? Am I correct in this assumption?

    Check bluetooth Mice from dell

    Dell's travel mouse
is a very good option around $30

You should also check Microsofts laser mouse 8000. It has rechargeable option at $70

Another option is same Microsoft Laser presenter mouse 8000 at $76

There are good options form Logitech too

I spoke with the rep.I got $510 off from the core price.

    $359 - Instant saving

    $50 - Rep offered me

    $101 - 7% off on EPP

    + $50 promotional gift card + Free shipping + upgrade from 500GB @5400 to 500GB @ 7200 with free fall sensor.

I'm very satisfied with my deal

I had an online chat from 3PM to around 3.45PM (yeah a long chat really) (Eastern Time US and Canada) i.e. at 0.30 am to 1.15 am (+5.30 GMT, India)

Is that delay all because of the 500 GB 7.2k drive? If so I'm glad i went with the 320 gb now. Well hopefully they get it to you as promised now by the 21st. If it makes you feel any better, I bought a new TV and it got here the same time my SXPS 16 did yet the stand I bought for it off eBay still hasn't shipped and I've had my TV sitting in a box for a week now.

    Hmmm...

So if I understand correctly, the 500gigs @ 5400 rpm won't slow down my system, just loading times?

And with the P7350@2GHz, how many fps should I expect if I play Crisis on high? (I'm not a big fan of this game, it's just for reference, I'm more into Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed....)

Try to get them to give you freebies for the extra wait. They used to throw in NBD + free backpack.

OK so after calling the order status line about 30 times over the last 10 days, it finally said this morning that my comp had been shipped last night. I found out that what that actually means is that they told fedex about it but fedex has yet to pick it up. My fedex tracking number shows that the "order infromation" has been received but not picked up.

Also FedEx says estimated delivery tomorrow (Thursday) but Dell says estimated delivery on Friday. Is this normal and do you think FedEx is more trustworthy?

I already got NBD for the win7 snafu. I ordered on the 25th and was told that I still qualified, so no surprise when I had to cancel and reorder.

I may email my rep lady and see what she can do for me.

    Id probably buy fedex's date.

NBD will not get you your laptop any faster . Even ground will get there in the same amount of time. Try to get them to give you an extra year of warranty. etc

Yes go by the FedEx date but be sure to be in ear shot of your front door the date of expected delivery. FedEx is not as accomodating as UPS when it comes to resolving a missed delivery.

Yup, I think the driver has the door tag ready to go before he gets to your door and instead of knocking just places the tag directly.

The FedEx delivery people actually knock on my door and wait around. The UPS guy always dumps the package in front of my door and leaves. I've caught him doing this twice now and despite phoning his supervisor and complaining, nothing has happened. Go figure.

Got my laptop yesterday. FedEx left it at my neighbor’s house. Luckily he brought it over to me when he got home from work. I thought a PC from Dell had to be signed for? Apparently the FedEx driver signed for it himself since no one was home at my neighbors and there was a signature in the delivery conformation section on the FedEx website.

Anyway, I managed to spend about 15 minutes with my new SXPS 16 last night and so far I love it. The RGB screen is great. It’s not as bright as I thought it would be but the colors are rich and sharp. Not sure if I will do a clean install, may just remove some programs and disable some services. I can’t wait to spend more time with it.

    [Edit]
It seems as if its working now. No more sticking. Has anyone else had this issue when they first received their laptop and should I be worried?

MY XPS 16 is supposedly going to come Early August. Now I have a early question. When I first get my laptop, is there anything I have to do? I know it sounds dumb but I keep reading about drivers and BIOS and stuff and I have no idea what that means. Do I have to upgrade anything or download something?

Another question, when I call the order status hotline, the automated voice says my order is processing, yet both the website and a dell rep. told me it is in production. Whats da deal with that?

    Thanks

I think the order status line is bugged.

    Try 800-283-2210

    Option 3
    Option 2
    Option 1
    Option 1

That should provide a more accurate order status

The order status line says processing right until it's shipped. As for needing to do anything, you don't. Everything is ready to go when you first start the laptop.

ok , fedex still says estimated delivery of 7/16/09, but it shows it as "initiated" but not "picked up". How the hell is it supposed to get here tomorrow if fedex hasn't even picked it up yet?!?!?!

This is wrong. All bluray players you buy now can handle 50 gigs +. Theretically even more its just up to companies to start bringing out these bigger disks. There are already dual layer BD which are 50 gigs but they are pretty expensive

    Hi guys...

I am about to order my system...
just wondering if the 500gb 5400 rpm is worth the extra 100$ over the 320Gb 7200 rpm ( I live in Canada)
Apparently the 256gb SSD is no longer available here in Canada and i can't wait anymore. I wanted to get the SSD because it generate less heat so that's why i think i should go for the 5400 rpm. Can someone tell me the model of those 500GB drives please. I'd like to check out their spec before i submit my order tomorrow.

    Thanks !

I just received my XPS 1640 with the 4670 graphics today. I had returned the previous one with the 3670 graphics card.

I see one change immediately with my latest 1640 that will improve the cooling in the wrist rest and touch pad area known to be a hot spot in this computer. The 1640 has a good heat pipe conduction cooling system for the CPU and graphics chip but has lacked good convection cooling of the inside chassis.

On the bottom cover there now is a very large 6" x 1.5" continuous air vent starting directly under the keypad area and ending about 1.5" to the right of the subwoofer grill. On the earlier XPS16 that I received and returned in early June, the air vent on the bottom cover below the touchpad was very much smaller. This should offer less resistance to air flow in this critical heat generating area.

Also I noted that the cooling fan air intake on the newer computer has two slots in the gasket that presses against the bottom cover. If my memory serves me, I believe that the earlier 1640 did not have the two slots in the foam air intake gasket. Someone with an older 1640 should be able to confirm this.

These slots should allow more air from the inside chassis area to be pulled into the fan intake and create more negative air pressure within the chassis. The larger bottom cover intake air vent and these fan intake slots combined should create more convection cooling in the front center chassis area of the computer. There is a lot of open space in the chassis to allow air to flow freely to the cooling fan from the new large vent area underneath the touch pad.

With a laptop cooler like the Zalman 2000, this new large intake air vent is perfectly placed to receive the air flow from the Zalman which is concentrated more toward the front bottom of the computer.

I just found some photos of earlier 1640's on the web and the bottom vents look the same as the picture you posted above which is the same as my new computer. Also the slots in the fan gasket were there in the earlier version per the earlier photos. Sorry - I should have checked it out more thoroughly before posting.

    OK :|

    A false positive ..

I was kind of excited a bit.

Anyways .. Dell can really make some vents on the area bellow "115" since its just below touchpad. This might help to air flow

Also..the part below touchpad, where it gets lot hotter is "WWAN" So is wireless card responsible for more heat generation than processor and graphic card ?

Great thread guys, thanks for the constant updates. Believe it or not, reading fresh material helps ease the whole waiting anxiety thing.

Brilliant news - originally the Dell order page showed my machine would arrive on the 23rd, but just checked, and the updated date shows the 17th!

Couldn't be more excited - really makes me feel like a kid again :D.

    Specs:

    T9950 @ 2.66 GHz
    4 GB RAM
    ATI Radeon Mobility 4670 - 1GB
8 x drive (didn't go for the Bluray yet)
    320 GB HD
    16" WLED LCD
    Intel 5100, Bluetooth 2.1

Hypothetically speaking, if I buy a HDMI cord and using that respective cord, I can play Crysis and other PC games on my buddy's hdtv?? if so...... :D :D :D

Also, can I run a game, for instance, Crysis, at 1080p with a decent framerate or does the 4670 not allow it?

Crysis won't do well at 1080p. It does fine at 720p though and yes you can use hdmi output to connect it to an hdtv for large screen gaming--i've already done it.
