    World of Warcraft Note:

With all the settings turned to high except shadows (low), Full-Screen mode @1920x1080 I was getting 60-65 fps.........and I was installing COD WAW at the same time! Even when I jumped on a flying Mount my FPS never went below 60!

why would you want to go to all the trouble of replacing a motherboard in a laptop? sounds like a giant waste of time to me. As far as our discussion I'm just going to refrain from adding anything else to it since you obviously have your mind made up and you apparently know everything. And as far your rumor trash, go look up every article in the past 2 years about anything Nvidia or ATI related, Charlie was right everytime before anyone else reported about it.

Nvidia is on the way out, whether you like to think so or not.

That statement alone makes you lose all credibility. Yeah nVidia is on the way out..oh wait if I recall correctly, AMD/ATi has been in the red nearly every quarter for years and has lagged in performance compared to nVidia (which has only recently gone into the red thanks to a weak economy). Yep nVidia is on the way out alright. Oh yeah and Charlie D and the INQ are really credible..ha!

Here's some facts directly from the horse's mouth:

This has been a trend for AMD/ATi for years. nVidia until the beginning of 2009 was turning profits and will likely respond very quickly to short term losses. They're much more business saavy than ATi/AMD ever has been.

Edit: Charlie D even has a hate blog dedicated to him: http://charliedemerjianisad ouchebag.blogspot.com/ (fill in the gap between the d and o in the URL). Do a cursory google search on his reputation and you'll see just how accurate his reports are. Tenknics, you need to find a better outlet for tech news. I'd suggest www.anandtech.com or www.engadget.com or if you want to know the details of GPU's, check out www.beyond3d.com

P.S. Where are my ATi mobility drivers? Because nVidia has them up on their website thus not shackling their products to the whims of OEMs. Yep with support like that, nVidia is definitely on the way out.

Joker, how old is your machine?
In that video he did not appear to have any glue/epoxy around that screen, but you did. Did you have to heat up the edge to pull back the plastic cover or did it pull apart cleanly. I still have my soon to be returned laptop here, might take a whack at this. I have two dust/blemish spots in the upper right about 2 nches in, I wonder if I can get to it.

Edit: I see in your signature the date.

I didn't know there was going to be any epoxy because brazilianguy didn't have any in the video he made. So I didn't think to heat it before attempting to open it. Give it a try and see how it goes for you, a credit card or student id works perfect. I decided to take your advice and ask for a system replacement. Might as well be on the safe side while I can since I'm within the 21 days.

Check the Catalyst Control Center (advanced menu). Then go to color and adjust the RGB's to your preference. You can use a calibration dvd for better accuracy.

Note to all of you non-US based customers :

Laptop ordered on the 11th, I just checked the Fedex tracking website and it is in Paris (arrrrgggghh so close and yet so far away) So I'll probably get it tomorrow. So 19 days total from order to delivery.

Not too bad I guess, given it got hauled all the way to Memphis, TN.

On a side note, I miss the US of A !
Probably a benchmark and Mass Effect gameplay vid tomorrow. (How much should I expect from a 2GHz proc?)

Bonne fin de journée ! :p

I want some reviews of the new base model screen (1600x900).

I am REALLY interested in this. I have seen Sony's 1600x900 16" screens and they are great.

Anyone who ordered this screen get it yet? Let me know how it is.....

i'm thinking about it too, for my budget it would make things a lot easier, and for me, 1080p for 16" sounds a bit crazy and 900p sounds much more appropriate, but i can't really tell as long as i don't see them in real life, but i haven't got a chance to do that.. i'm not sure if i would like it, also people praise the rgbled so much that i'm afraid i would regret it later if i don't choose it. too bad nobody owns it yet.
but u already have an rgbled one, would u change it to this 900p wled?

I'll have mine at the latest 8/6... I'll be sure to post pictures and a review... I too think 1920x1080 is ridiculous for a 16" laptop, but the RGB screen is so nice to passup... I spent $1100 on my samsung 46" 1080p lcd though so I pretty much already made my decision with this laptop screen 3 months ago... I ordered with the 1366 screen and 2 days later saw the new options... called them up and after multiple phone convos that lasted 3 hours I got them to switch it out for the new 15.6 1600x900

    can't wait

I took a 17" screen protector from clarivue which is nearly invisible and traced it to fit the 1640 screen. It covers the mic holes and edge seams to keep out dust. If I need a mic I will plug one in.

nice price, its through epp, isn't it?
i'm still considering buying through it, but since theoretically i couldn't do this i still don't know if i would have problems later or not..

btw i still don't get what 15,6" means on a 16" laptop.. there will be a bigger empty place around the screen then? it's pretty weird..

So I just got my laptop and am really liking it.

I decided to register for Windows 7. I entered all my info in the Dell site with my service tag and it says that I'm not eligible??? That doesn't make any sense since I match the eligibility criteria and was assured that I will be getting Windows 7 by the sales rep.

    So... w t f?

I am also running into the same problem. It's even on my order sheet but it says that I do match the eligibility criteria. Guess I will contact Dell and see what they say

Anyone know what happened to the SSD option ? Even with the new Intel G2 drives becoming available, the 256GB Samsung was a well priced option.

Also what's up with the 9-cell battery? Was $80, then $100, now $180 ??? I'd like to get it but certainly won't be forking out $180 for it...

Hey all, did you happen to order this through the EPP site? Many times your service tag does not show up on their site as if your computer does not exist. So, first check to see if your service tag is valid through your account information on the Dell.com website. If your service tag is not found, call customer service and advise them that your service tag is not being found.

Once they put in your service tag and "activate" it, it should take about 2-3 days to show on their system. I am sure that once your service tags are found and valid, you probably will be able to register the computer for the win 7 update. Now this is all speculation on my part, but I hope it helps. :)

    Guys, please help.

Why is it that when I am gaming(any game), my CPU always reaches and usually stays at 100% REGARDLESS of graphic settings and resolution?

It it really annoying playing COD4 with the framerate dropping to 5 everytime it gets crowded, even at the lowest resolution and low graphic settings.

    thanks in advance.

Cheers for Dell SXPS 1640 owners!

Please let me know if there are any modded BIOS available for our machine, or any tools to perform such a moddification (matching SLIC 2.1 table from a .bin file into the original BIOS, or deblocking the proc multiplicator).
I have been searching through a few another forums like http://forums.mydigitallife.info/, but it's only a confusion that I get.

    Have anyone tried Wow7.exe tool?

Just asking beeing curious, since in a few months the Vista installed on my system will be replaced with Win7 in a legal way. But why to have to wait so long since RTM is already all over the net

Mine's "in production" as well, estimated delivery 8/12.
If they are running the same build time as previous, should be here next week.
My previous EDD was 8/3 and I had it 7/27.

Let's keep in touch here on this "screen dust" issue.

    Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 2.40 Ghz
    Vista Home Premium
    15.6" Truelife 720p HD WLED
    4096MB
    500GB
    1GB ATI Radeon HD 4670
    Blu-Ray ROM combo

    Currently £949 - 5% with 1QM0P8V2F?4LFQ and another 5% with http://www.quidco.com/dell/

which brings it down to £855 (around $1400)

with the upgraded screen and the T9600

    its £1199 - 5% with 1QM0P8V2F?4LFQ and another 5% with http://www.quidco.com/dell/

which brings it to £1080 ($1780)

    extra £143 for 3 year warranty ($235)

15% tax is probs why it's a little more pricey over here.

in fact looking at the US site currently its cheaper to get it in the UK after tax. :p just wish they offered it in Merlot red :p

the screen is still a bit overpriced at £250 upgrade considering it was a $200 upgrade in the US. Saying that £230 for the screen and the upgraded CPU is money well spent.

If you followed the industry as much as you represent you'd know nvidia is on the way out. Their newest chip is delayed by 3-4 quarters, they no longer have a license to produce chipsets for intel cpus (nehalem+), which was a major part of their buisness for years, they don't have a CPU of their own and they are still paying out the butt for all the mistakes they made from 8600 fiasco and bumpgate. Slander Charlie all you want. Who cares if their is a hate site about him? How many other people in the world have hate sites about them? That doesn't make them any less credible. The sites are made by haters, ie people like you. And I do read all those sites. Ive been reading those sites for YEARs, thanks. ANd one thing they all have in common, they report what charlie does months after he posts it. Its ok..I bet you read Tom's Hardware and anything Theo V. posts.

Think long term and not so immediate. Whats nvidia going to do when westmere and bulldozer hit? Both those product families are fusion products. How will nvidia compete without a cpu core? It doesn't have an x86 license, it can never make one legally. And without a chipset business where else are they going to make revenue, Tegra? Laugh...Ion? Laugh. I guess they can do what they've been doing for the past year and just keep renaming old products with new model #s. That will surely keep them in the game! L O L

Oh and btw, until you yourself score some great insider stories and leak stuff before any of your other precious sites do, or become a journalist who travels the world seaking the truth and ignoring silly NDAs, I sugguest you stop talking bad about him. I don't see you doing any better.

Obama has a hate site about him. I guess this makes him a less credible president...Michael Jackson has hate sites about him..guess that makes him a bad singer. You're logic is incredible.

This is covered by my Complete Care warranty, right?

I ask because I will probably see if I can live with these 3 little specs of dust (which are only really visible when the screen is light colored... but if they persist to annoy me in the future I will call to get it fixed/replaced.

IMO, if the imperfection is barely noticable and all the other aspects of the machine are good I would not request a replacement. Getting another is a crapshoot and it could very well have some other issue or a worse screen imperfection. The screen could be serviced later down the road.

The imperfections in mine were too big to ignore and stood out far too noticably or I would have kept it. The fit and finish was really good and had no cosmetic issues at all except the screen. But after all, the great screen is what we are paying for with these 1640 machines.

Most likely dust. Me and Viper have this problem and have new systems on the way from Dell. If you are past your 21 day period however, refer to page 1 of the FAQ for instructions on how to get rid of the dust. Remember to heat the frame before you attempt to pull it off so it loosens the epoxy.

wow this thread has become really scary as of late. all sorts of problems with the screens and heat. I'm getting kinda worried.

are your laptops new or from the outlet?

I bought it new from Dell.ca

On the bright side I have been using my Zalman NC2000 and I haven't been experiencing any heat issues whatsoever.

I think I solved the XP x86 (32bit, for searches) driver installation problem for the ATI Mobility 4670.

I had my SXPS 16 built through the website, though I ordered over the phone from a sales rep, and received it on the 24th (Initially told the 27th, notified it was delayed until the 3rd of August on the 22ed, then read an email that it had shipped while using the SXPS that was timestamped 22hrs prior! Rivals Newegg shipping) The plastic that covers the screen bulges just below the top right corner... :/ I think I'm going to use some silicone adhesive around the edges to keep dust and stuff out.

Unfortunately they are new and it seems to be a design flaw of the edge to edge plastic cover.

I was told that you had to wait 21 days after shipment before the system would accept your information.

ok so I was able to get my facial recognition and powerDVD software back but neither smartsource.dell.com or the drivers site had the webcamcentral software? any help here? I'm going to call dell and have them ship me the software but I would like to know where to download it as well. It really annoys me that they don't just send the software to begin with.
