It is strictly a software solution, no change to the built in audio hardware.

It went into production on July 29th and it's still in the build stage. The automated ship date is Aug 10th as of right now.

Mine was ordered 7/27 confirmed in production 7/28 with estimate delivery 8/12. On my last system, I had it a week before the EDD. Should get tracking soon if there are no parts delays.

I have to tell ya, I'm really anxious for this one and praying it's a keeper. I really love this system. I still have my first one here haven't sent it back yet...

Yes same here. I've cleaned out the dust and haven't had any since then but I'm still worried that with the loosened epoxy, it could come back at anytime. So that's why I decided to play it safe and order a replacement. With a few guys recently having defective displays, I'm hoping this new one isn't one of them. The display on this one is nearly perfect, no dead pixels and very minimal light bleed.

Just curious: What is considered a dangerous GPU/CPU temperature range?

For instance, if I see my GPU spike to 65 C and/or my CPUs hitting 60 C, should I be worried?

It varies slightly among manufactures, but your GPU is much more resiliant than the CPU. GPU's can get as high as 110 C before you should get worried about it burning out! The CPU, on the other hand, doesn't need to break 80 C for any reason. Dell wouldn't allow configurations that'll burn out early to be shipped; their warranty is too good for them to allow it. Now, if you're resting your hands on the touchpad while it's laying in your lap...it's not going to be comfortable AT ALL if it's running close to those tempatures. That's not Dell's concern, though. If you want a powerful, cool running system then you need to underclock/undervolt a configuration (draining a bit of it's power when you do, so buy more than you need [haha, right]). Espically when you're getting this much power in this small and light package.

Tricks to modestly underclock/undervolt? I wouldn't mind dropping 10% of it's power if it ran notably cooler and longer on battery...

I have read this over and over and it is like night and day in the sound. The SB software allows you to fine tune the audio and make it much crisper and richer. There is a built in chip in all the 1640's but this software is the only way to unlock it according to Creative.

Hi, I'm seriously considering this setup of XPS 16 and the 4670 card. I have heard and read a lot about heating issues with the system, and I went to bestbuy and felt the system as it was running. It seems to get pretty hot. I was wondering if it is still a good choice. I'm not keen on buying a hot system, but the XPS has everything I am looking for at a decent price. I was also wondering if the XPS 16 has changed since its release to accommodate better cooling. I know this is a common question, but I would appreciate it being answered. Thanks.

If you search around this forum you will realize that:

    1) Whether or not it's a good choice is up to you. Everyone looks for diff stuff
    2) SXPS 16 is hot because it packs a lot of power into a relatively thin laptop. There exists a technology called a cooling pad which, when 1 spends $10 on eBay, 1 can dramatically reduce the temperatures and increase performance
    3) Some speculate the cooling system has changed, some say it hasn't. I personally think it has since my processor runs a lot more coolly than with the old 1

As far as heat being an issue it depends on use. For me, my SXPS mostly lives on my downstairs dining room table propped up by an Antec Notebook Cooler To Go. I game on it a lot, Conan and LOTRO, and heat hasn't been an issue at all. I also use a Bluetooth mouse and have an SSD. Now for people who like to really be mobile and use their machine on their lap or bed, well I think they've commented on it being too hot.

Thanks for the replies. I have searched around the forum, and around the internet, and I keep hearing mixed results. I actually planned on buying this system several weeks ago, and then heard about "overheating". I have heard that a cooling pad helps, and I have also heard that it doesn't. I have also heard that much of the heat is due to poor engineering of the chassis and ventilation system. I know my question was kinda stupid, but I wanted a direct answer to clear up some confusion. I plan on only using my laptop on desks and in my dorm, so maybe the heat problem won't be as bad as some say. Once again I appreciate the help.

I have a pretty new one (manufactured late July) and I can confirm that it DOES get "hot", especially during gaming, but its not excessive and would not be considered *overheating*. The touchpad does get pretty uncomfortable, but if you are gaming you should be using a mouse so its not too big an issue. I'm picking up an NC2000 just because the heat is a little uncomfortable for me, but the system is by no means "overheating" - it is within normal range.

gggrrrrrr,,, I know I posted this in the "rgbled settings" thread but the white on my xps16's screen in yellowish. After I compared it to my hdtv, I realized the the white on the laptop screen is not really that white which kinda sucks.

    btw, thanks dayton

I've asked on the Adobe forums. Wait a bit.

Alot of people are having this problem. If you are a bit technically savvy, just reseat the touch panel and it should work. Or if you're not, like me, just call as Tech Support to send you a technician. Ask them to reseat the touch panel so you don't have to wait so long for them to send a new touch panel.

Hi. I too have a Studio XPS (1340) and I have Windows 7 build 7100. I tried to access the downloadstore.dell.com/media page, but the "Register System" button did not work for me. I contacted Tech Chat but they could not help me. I don't care much for the DVD software, but I really want Dell Webcam and Fast Access. Would you be able to provide me with the installers? My email is [email protected] if that is easier for you. I really want to download these two programs. Thank you.

Obviously ssome people must have pretty thin skin, or low tolerance of heat. This laptop is nowhere near as hot as any of my macbook pro's. Unless you have it on carpet or your bed or something stupid like that it is NOT an issue. I honestly feel like I wasted money buying my zalman cooler, i really don't think it gets bad at all. I play warcraft for like 7 hours this weekend with it on my laptop and it was fine.

is anyone getting some serious backlight bleeding with their 1080p rgb led displays, on the left side of the screen? Their seems to be a faint vertical cloud on the left side of the screen, its not on the edge either but more like three inches away from the left most edge of the screen. Its generally only visiable when the screen is all black and when your looking at it from the right side? Can anyone check their displays and report back?

I have very light bleed around the enitre border of my display, but it's only noticeable during boot. But for the most part it's much less than most of my other laptops.

applejoos, what i did was open up MS paint and bucket the whole screen with black. Can you try doing this with yours? When i do this the whitish cloud appears on the left hand side of the screen going from the top to the bottom of the screen. Do you suppose this would constitute as a defect and have the warrany replace the screen?

I changed to an all black wallpaper and the edges do show bleed, but again it's very minimal, less than a half inch at full brightness, it decreases as i turn the brightness down

it seems that on my display the bleeding is about three inches away from the border. i can understand right at the edges but this one is a stray verticial splotch thats surrounded by non bleeding blackness(on a black BG). Also i lowered the brightness and changed the color settings and its still there. Would the warranty cover such an issue?

For what it's worth, I disagree with this assessment. I played Neverwinter Nights 2 on a table-top surface with a 9-cell battery and the front lifted on a 1/2" high wedge to allow airflow.

The touchpad is by no means hot, nor the area to the left of the touchpad. The underside of the XPS 16 is far too hot for lap usage when playing games/videos. I literally cannot hold my hand against the under-isde of the touchpad for more than about 10 seconds.

This was when my GPU temp was reporting 60 C too.

For comparison, my Inspiron 8600 had one of those batteries that was recalled for potential fire hazard. The battery area of my 8600 is AS HOT as the underside of the touchpad.

I'm buying a infinite notepad cooler to allow for lap usage.

    Hey guys

Anyone has pics of the new non-leather SXPS 16?

Also, maybe it has been asked before, but what's the difference between wireless 5100 and 5300?

as far as cooling, the only reason we notice the SXPS16 getting hot is because there is a damn exhaust pipe that runs underneath the track pad and then the hard drive being to the right of it doesnt help either.

Has anyone tried reapplying thermal paste to the processor core and GPU? that should bring down temps at least 5-8c.

No pics, I ordered that system and I was told that the (now) non-leather part is like the top.

The 5300 has more antennas and it can get higher rates than the 5100 (with the corresponding router of course)
