Viper: It doesn't apply the ICC to the whole OS in Vista, you need a LUT loader to do that. In Win7 there is a way to apply it to the whole OS and I have provided a link which explains how to do that.
bassflow: You asked how to do it in Vista and I explained. Just apply the ICC and run a LUT loader. I even gave you a link to a LUT loader. Jeez how much easier can I make it for you? Try actually reading the links I provided. -
I was trying to adjust the colors using ATI CCC and Everest's monitor tests, without much success.
I gave up, and downloaded the ICC profile then followed the instructions through your links. That did the trick! ATI automatically disabled its own color controls when it detected OS color control in Win7. Thanks for posting, and thanks to the original source too.
This may be a stupid question, but how do you set brightness to 40% ? In CCC the range is -100 to +100; I set it at -20. Is this correct or should it be set elsewhere ?

Good Luck! -

how come on hwmonitor, the temperature of my gpu and ssd do not appear?

Sorry I've not responded. I've been trying to get the TV Tuner to work. To do with PAL and DVB signals. Using MS KB948182 to resolve it.
I will post a screen view ASAP.
The screen goes from 1920x1080 straight to 1280x1024. -
Hi all
Hopefully I'll join you soon as a 1640 owner - ordered it on 10/8 and so far the estimated delivery is 20/8.
Ordered it with a P8600 and a 15,6 1080P WLED monitor, can't wait to get it -
Just order my xps 16 too and same spec as mandrake, just keeping fingers crossed it runs cooler than my studio 1555

just got my 1640, and so far im very impressed. i was a bit worried about the heat issue, but i have been using for about an hour now and the heat is not an issue at all. the keyboard is awesome. the screen is stunning. and im very impressed with the speakers on this thing.

Billant thanks newhit. Is it the LG panel?
-
Think about the 9 cell battery in the future as well, it helps lift the rear of the machine up and will def give you more airflow/cooling. I bit the bullet and ordered one at the ridiculous current price less the 20% coupon.

sorry I should have given instructions.
goto: device manager>monitors>generic PnP monitor (or may be named)
now go to the details tab,on the drop down menu choose Hardware Id.
Mine is LG020B in my studio 1555 1080p screen, this is an LG panel. -
Also, do you think the colors look accurate and good? -
-
after a couple of hours of use, the only problem ive encountered is fingerprints, but the black bag the ship with it does a good joob wiping them off.
-
Make sure you guys check your displays carefully for dust behind the clear panel over time.
-
I just ordered mine last night (8.12.09) ^_^
http://fractureddream.blogspot.com/2009/08/xps-16.html
Hopefully it arrives before Sept.
Just disappointed at the current battery pricing. Does anyone know any other legit place to get the 9-cell battery? I am not likely to use this laptop for "mobile" purposes as I always just get the upgrade batteries for all my laptops simply to prop it up for cooling. -
Dell just added the T9900 CPU (3.06GHz).

Thanks for posting the pics newhit. Just out of curiousity, is the notebook with the 15.6 screen actually smaller or is it the same size when compared to the notebook with the 16 inch screen.
Cause if its the same size, then might as well just get a bigger screen on the same notebook, yes/no? -
I believe the notebook itself is the same size as I have spoken to a sales person about it. The main diff is the screen is .2'' shorter on each side.
-
Thanks again Newhit. Thats the AU Optronics panel, I believe that is supposed to be a really good panel too, how are you finding it?
I will compare my xps to my 1555 when it arrives -
And with a little bit more light we can see it a bit better -
Dell's sending out replacement system #3. Hopefully 3rd time is a charm!
-
In my experience, AU Optronics panels are always of lesser quality than LG and Samsung which are 2 other panels Dell uses. Of course the RGB LED is a seiko epson which is something new. -
wow Joker, you arent having much luck! Keep your fingers crossed for this one.
Were both being replaced due to the screen blemishes? or have you had other problems too?
Edit - strangely, if you take a look at the 1555 thread, the samsung is the poor screen and then AUO and LG are good. My first 1555 had a samsung screen, it was so bad I sent it back -
I wonder how many times they will send replacements till they tell you to go take a hike? -
Well I suppose the panel quality could vary from one line of notebook to the other. Things could have also changed in a few years, the last system I used with the aforementioned manufacturers was the Dell XPS 1710. I had problems with the AU Optronics panel, the backlight died once and the second one had an incredibly washed out looking picture. Dell decided to send me a new system build + send a tech out to swap out the AUO. They replaced the AUO screen with a Samsung which was considerably better. The last system build I received had the LG panel which was the best of them all, it had the deepest blacks + colors and little to no clouding.
Both of the SXPS 16's I've received thus far have had dust behind the screen. The first one I had to break the seal to remove the dust so now it's prone to picking up dust--I've noticed specs showing up in the left side. The second replacement was far worse, it has this dark blotch of dirt about 5-6 pixels wide in the left side of the screen as well. I posted a picture of it a few pages back. -
Ha I didn't even think they'd send a 3rd system out. I'm very impressed by their customer service and it's why I keep coming back to them as a customer. I actually feel bad about ordering replacements but then again, it's hard to settle for a new system that has blemishes as a result of the build. If I'd caused it I'd suck it up but that's not the case here. -
yeah i did see your pic, sounds like it could be a common problem if you have had 2 in a row. Was it easy separating the screen?
Oh and I agree with the LG screen quality, the 1080p in my 1555 is the best screen i have owned -
It does seem to be a problem since there are others that have replaced their screen twice before they got one that was dust free. Don't bother separating the screen, it's epoxied so once you do, it breaks the seal and it's hard to reseal it. I tried resealing it using a hair dryer on high heat but it didn't work. You'd be better off just requesting a panel exchange from Dell. I hope they discontinue using this edge to edge crap with the next edition of this laptop, it creates headaches for users and Dell's losing money unnecessarily on perfectly functioning displays. -
The first 1640 I got had the screen "dust" issue too, but the replacement is perfect. So it is possible, and I'd say the odds are with Joker this time.
-
*knocks on wood frantically* -
Also does the edge to edge make the screen more reflective? I have an acer 8935g which has edge to edge and it is so reflective I cant position it anywhere near a window! The screen is also really poor so will be selling it when the xps arrives
-
my xps 1640 finally arrived
a quick question: what case to u recommend for it? i really need one.. -
Wow, I'm getting the distinct impression that the 1640's are susceptible to dust incursions. Would this be happening with one particular make of screen or many?
-
Just got mine yesterday & the RGB screen really is superb. I'm impressed by the graphics too, plays Bioshock smoothly with high settings @ 720p. This really is a well balanced desktop replacement that's capable of a bit of everything.
I do have 2 issues tho. Firstly, I notice a slight flicker once in a while with the screen. Anyone else had this & is it perhaps normal for a laptop? My 2nd issue is probably more down to the OS, I hear a click sound when I'm not clicking, system sounds are off too, here's a sample: http://omploader.org/vMjU2eQ/clapclick.wav - When it plays seems to be totally random...
Any advise? -
I don't get the sound issue but I do get the occasional very slight flicker. I think it only occurs when on battery power. Quite annoying.
-
I got my xps 16 today, and was wondering if someone could answer a few questions.
1. How can i tell and make sure I have the 7200 rpm drive and not the 5400 speed one?
2. Is there a place I can tell and see That i have the RGBLED screen. Im pretty sure i do, obviously i ordered it and was on my invoice, and it looks
awesome so im sure it is, but can i confirm somewhere its the RGB one?
3. does anyone know how to UNinstall the Dell Datasafe 2.0 software? I
went into controll panel and tried to uninstall form add/remove programs and it will not remove, and i get a reoccuring message about dell datasafe 2.0 has stopped working and i need to close program.
Thanks!! Ill post a few reviews/thoughts once i get everything set up how i need it and some pics to if anyone cares or wants any info! -
Grr..I'm angry...They dropped the T9800 and now offer the T9600 and the T9900 and its cheaper then the 9800...I hate how Dell can changes their components so quickly w/o notice..I haven't even booted up my machine once yet...ARGH..I wanted the 9900 originally because Intel sells it at same price as a 9800 in terms of the actual chip itself...
