I just love how the new one has no dust stuck in the speaker grills. A few days later and it will be full of junk..

How are the temperatures with heavy GPU+CPU load on the new sxps 16 equiped with 4670? Is the cooling sufficient to prevent the GPU from throttling (without additional notebook-coolers or (home-made)notebook-risers)?

All 3 of mine so far have been SEC. Maybe it isn't reading the device id properly for you. BTW guys, this latest display I have has absolutely no backlight bleed at all from the sides on a black background. Both of the previous laptops had it so perfectly backlit ones are out there.

if the video card was stronger, wouldnt this laptop be one of the best ever?!?!

it sucks, there should be a decently easy way to upgrade it.

The next step up would be a 4800 series card and those would require more drastic cooling which the SXPS 16 can't deliver.

I've noticed that the ones I got hardly bled at first until a little later it showed up worse and worse.

well, saying it sucks would have been OK when there was only 3670 available but since now 4670 is available too which is one of the best mid-rage cards (i think it's maybe the best) and since SXPS16 in considered as a multimedia laptop u have really no reason to say that.

Or they could make the SXPS just a tiny bit thicker... Would cool it.

Because I mean what is the point of having a thin laptop that you always have to have a cooler attached to, thus making it thicker.

I don't have a cooler attached to mine. It runs cool enough to use on my lap daily but for gaming it does need a desk or laptop cooler. I like the form factor the way it is and any thicker would make it lose it's appeal. If you guys want a gaming system, buy the Alienware M17x or a competing Sager system.

The M17x starts at 1799 and the 8662 at 1499 ;) Also I think this laptop is the sexiest one on the market. I like the looks of the Sager but it was out of my budget. :( I mean, hell, like .1 of an inch would cool it down.

If you are going to game you have to do some kind of cooling, but this is true of most laptops that aren't gaming rigs but are gaming capable. I just picked up a Zalman NC2000 and it is pretty nice, a great solution for that stationary spot. When on the go you will be better served propping up the back, with maybe the 9 cell battery or the Antec Cooler To Go.

what i meant by sucks is that it sucks that you cannot upgrade the video card since it is soldered on the motherboard.

and ideally, if this laptop DID have a stronger video card, I really think that the xps16 would be the best laptop ever!

but dont get me wrong, this laptop, imo, is still one of the best laptops.

Gaming is IMO not the first and only purpose of the SXPS. This machine is built to be a multimediamachine. Sure, you can also play games on it (and with the 4670 it's even more game-capable), but that is not what it was designed for.

All in all I think it's a nifty little performer with fantastic performance. Can't wait to get my new one with the 4670 in it... :D

my SXPS have good gaming temp. (no issues at all)

SXPS use only one fan, so every small amount of heat you can erase is welcome :) in my point of view its about 2 things.

first of all i have the 9-cell battery (who make the airflow better under the PC)
second i have the P7350 CPU who runs a bit cooler, (still very good CPU).

(T series is rated at 35 Watts, and the P series is rated at 25 Watts and also runs a bit cooler)

Is there a newer/better Synaptics driver thats out than the one that ships with this? The date on the dell drivers I have is older then what's listed on the driver/software page but the version # I have is older??

Also, besides that and Catalyst drivers, what else should I update thats out/newer?

There is no option to select white when customizing it, that graphic is just black and white.
    Black or red only.

Yeh true. It is 2am Friday over here in Australia. Dell AU updates their specs/prices every Friday by start of work time (around 9am or so) so we shall see what's happening there.

I'd consider getting the white just to be different

The white is available now as a colour and RGB-LED upgrade only. Its called "Alpine White".
But it looks like its just the lid that is white though...inside is still black.

How did you find all this out? Driver magician?

Edit: Thanks for the links. They all work. Except for the synamtics driver..Nevermind..Originally I said where are the options at because when I clicked properties on the driver and the list of properties is completely blank and unpopulated.. Then I starting search and it said I needed a hacked driver of an older version because I read "However, for marketing reason, Synaptics official standard drivers for most Synaptics TouchPads does not support multi-touch Synaptics Gestures. Synaptics’ drivers lock gesture features on all non-supported OEM notebooks and laptop PCs, except for certain gadgets such as ASUS EEE PC. So multi-touch is disabled even though touchpad hardware does support them"
I didn't wanna deal with that..So I just tried uninstalling the driver you listed, restarted and reinstalled..And wala, the properties list is populated with..PROPERTIES, and a crap ton. Yay I'm so happy, two finger scrolling ftw! So used to MacbookPro..

wow 3 finger application opening...this crap is fun :D

    Just use the Vista version.

tenknics I know because I always keep up to date with the latest drivers.

ViperGTS the chipset software just tells your OS which Intel components your PC or laptop has and what configuration they should be in.

I ordered mine on the same day as you. Specs pretty similar but I got 2.4ghz and Intel Wifi Link 5100. I called the hotline and they say its being processed, but online order status says In Production.

My friend ordered his XPS 16 in mid July and it was shipped out after 10 days.

Also I ordered mine with the free 3-5 day shipping, and I have an ETA at 8/31/09. My guess is they counted w/ 5 days just as worst case scenario. So... hopefully it arrives on the 28th (since 29th is sat) or 30th.

I have the exact same configuration as you. I got mine about 2 weeks after I ordered it. Not too bad... except for the fact the screens colors are way off, and Dell's monkey in India are mindless drones. I will prevail though.

I ordered the new one on the 14th, and expected date of delivery is 28-08. So far it's been "in production" for 5 days now...

Last time I got it was exactly on the predicted delivery date, but when delivered it still had the "in production" status, so that was never updated...

just got my xps 16 last tues and Im very impressed! worth every penny!
though i have one tiny problem, during the login screen initialization, a part of the screen goes black, sometimes half, sometimes 3/4 then it shows the whole login screen. has anyone experience this?

this doesnt happen always, sometimes it doesnt happen at all, sometimes 1 or 2x in a row. What i observed is before this happens, it usually takes vista to load the OS longer, maybe 9 - 14 pass of the progress bar during boot.

i took a video of it and here's the youtube link...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZ5Kdl9ihNg

    any help is appreciated...
