    Read and learn.
Seriously, for someone to complain about the heat on a laptop where there has been 1000000000 posts about how hot they can get is pretty dumb. No offense. And then complain about the screen where there have been 10000000 posts about how they need adjustment....read more.

True, the screen can be calibrated. But the terrible blacks can't be. I haven't seen the WLED, but other people who have seen them both say the blacks are better on the WLED.

At any rate, I can't see how the WLED's blacks could be any worse.

I had the WLED screen before this and the blacks were much better. Again, just my personal experience.

I wonder how bright the WLED is in comparison to the RGB LED? If the RGB display has worse blacks, it could be because it's brighter. The AR coating should be the same and they are both edge lit so that would be the only tangible explanation. While the RGB may be inaccurate out of the box, it can be calibrated to have a flat gamma curve and accurate colors. There are profiles floating around that have have been calibrated to 6500k (I personally didn't like them) or you could use CCC to set the gamma and colors using a calibration dvd. However, if you are not happy with the laptop, then by all means return it. It's your money and your prerogative, do what makes you happy.

Wheeeee I just got my laptop today ^_^

I Love the screen its very bright in comparison to my old HP dv2000t.

I just waxed the sXPS16 too so its even smoother and silkier to the touch (and no fingerprints for now!)

Laptop is undervolted and CPU idles around 102f (38-40C). This is with the 9-cell and tilted up.

i've been pretty happy with my sxps16 so far, except with one thing.
when i go it, the webcam that it has built in was working great with facial recognition.
after i formatted an put vista and the facial recognition back on, it takes ages for the webcam to actually turn itself on at the logon screen. i could have easily ligged in myself with my password.....has anyone ever seen this happen?

thats always from a cold boot, sometimes from a restart, works quick if i log out and back in.

by "slow at starting up" i mean i sit there, the web cam white light doesnt turn on soemtimes for a good 10-15 seconds at the logon screen.
it finally comes to life and recognises my face and logs me in.

Well in less than 24 hours my SXPS 16 has been sold. I guess that's the end of the road for me and Dell for now. It's been a fun ride, the laptop is top notch and I'll definitely miss it. The only reason I sold it is because I'm a gamer at heart and needed a bit more power than the 4670 could provide. I'll still be checking in on this thread and trying to keep the FAQ updated for you guys--but PM me if you really want something added because I'll likely be shifting over to the Asus forum soon. Peace.

I already had that with the factory install. When logging in from a cold boot it could take ages before it recognised me, but when I log off and log back in, it recognised me in a flash. Also when the FA tool is set to permanent security (so that it locks the machine when it doesn't see you anymore) it's extremely fast with it's recognition. But when I then shut down the machine and restart it, I can grow a beard before it recognises me...

I reinstalled the machine and found that I did not have the FA software anywhere. Tried to download it from smartsource, but even with IE7 on the machine it doesn't work... Application error... Now decided to not install it at all. Don't need it, don't really miss it (although I would like to have it again...). I'll get a new machine, so I'll be sure to dave it when the new machine comes...

well, before he bought the laptop, I guess he knew how Ati 4670 performed ????
    its pretty basic stuff.

if you want a hardcore gaming laptop, go for a M7130, or my absolutely darling, Cybersystem, (top-notch German-PC.....wayyyy nicer then Alienware 15" :)).

I guess it depends on what you are realistically intending to do with the machine. IMO, this XPS can't be beat for the combination of build quality, screen, multi media capability and gaming. (And stunning good looks). It is very well rounded, and with the 4670 capable of playing any game out there at mid range level and most at high level. It's big enough for a desk top replacement yet small enough to carry. Factor in the price point with available on site warranty and I don't know any other systen that matches up. Sure, it has some screen issues and heat issues on some systems and Dell tech support can be rough but if your not happy with it, Dell will send you a new one till you are.

No I haven't mainly because I don't understand how to load it and use the LUT loader software. I have the profile (I assume the latter one?) and know how to install it and find in in the color correction area in Vista, but am lost on how to apply.

Are you supposed to see the profile in CCC? How do you implement it?

    I'm all ears.... :D

it was normally $80, but there really was even a $60 price for it for a short time. it was $100 for a time, then suddenly $180. it happened a couple of month ago too, but then it came back to the normal price within a few weeks.. now it doesn't want to happen.

Awesome..soon as I praise it, it dies. My 24" won't turn on this morning, yet it was working fine last night? Nothing happens when I hit power...Yes I've tried several different outlets and unplugged and plugged the thing..Its less than a year old...?!

edit: now it's back up...wondering if its dying..?

On another note, everything is calibrated. It accidently calibrated the external so I just swapped devices and wala! Now my RGBlED almost perfectly matches with the 2408wfp, a 117% Wide gamut monitor. Im really enjoying this now :) Hope the monitor holds up!

I use it at 100% brightness and it still looks superb.

If you are comparing it to the default Windows profile yes it does look more yellow but it is a lot more accurate and you do adjust.

    ^^ I believe its GDDR3

Btw, the color profile thing has been working great..but now all of the sudden it stops loading it. The programs are even in the startup on msconfig, but it no longer loads the color profile on startup..I have to manually run the Calibrationloader.exe..Can someone help me fix this? How do I make it load on start again? / what caused it stop loading on startup?

Yes by using the LUT loader or the Windows 7 method the ICC is applied to the whole screen including the Windows GUI and all applications (apart from Windows Photo Viewer for some reason - I use InfranView instead).

The WLED screen doesn't need a custom ICC as it doesn't have a wide gamut.

I just received another Studio XPS 1640 and it has BIOS A10, the other 2 I have are on A08. I don't seem to find 1640_A10 anywhere on the Dell site. What is new compared to BIOS A08 and why can't I download it yet?

I noticed a thing that may or may not be related to the new bios: The one with the A10 can dim the display but the one with A08 can't dim and doesn't have the option to do it in the power options plan window. I installed everything the same on both laptops so it should be the bios enabling that right? (or am I wrong here)
