    @spud

    No. I talked with apparently the "nice" Jaguar Sales Team from Dell: they said that the regular policy is that when the customer representative sees that you've placed a new order, they'll waive it.

    If you want, call Dell and hit extension 2169173/2169174. Great people. :)

    @chuck

    Check the NBR homepage and Dell's blog. They have some numbers for the i7. SSD: yes, so I've heard.

    @RJEvans

    That's what I've heard: it was here in some thread. Someone else want to confirm/deny that the X-Fi stuff is just software? I've read it it here, but I can't think of which thread I was looking at. That's fine: Dell should have it's Win 7 rigs all lined up, programs fully compatible, and ATI's HD5000 Mobility Series should have some market penetration.

    @5150

    Haha, me or Had3K? I just want the Blu-ray burner, that's it. It was going to cost me $300-$600 (shady sites to Dell official price) for the burner. Why not just pay $39 more for that and a few other upgrades? If someone sold me a Blu-ray burner for even $100, I would've taken it as I could have recouped most of that from selling the reader. But this was too sweet a deal to ignore.

    Here's to hoping there are even bigger price cuts/coupons around the corner! :)

    WOOHOO The 256 GB SSD is back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I think it's a bit cheaper than before.

    But what's up with the Blutooth option? The normal option to add blutooth isn't there...it only gives the following guidance & options:

    For Bluetooth capability, first select the built-in card, then select peripherals as desired
    DW 370 (USB module) [$20]
    Dell Bluetooth Travel mouse [$32 or $1/month1]
    Dell BH200 Bluetooth 2.0 EDR Stereo Headset [$79 or $2/month1]

    It's the DW 370. It's incorrectly labeled as USB, the Dell Wireless 370 is a Mini-card, not in any way related to USB.

    Or they're now using a USB-type thing because somehow the new platform doesn't have an open Mini-card slot? Then it isn't the DW 370, it has to be something different. Unless they are inane enough to keep the same name for two totally difference devices.

    hi, guys, has the question been answered already on this forum?
    will intel's new "the fastest mobile chips on planet" fit into the old motherboard of dell studio 16 with intel core 2 duo and ati 3670 combo?
    also, whats the street price aka ebay of intel i7 720qm?
    i found one on ebay with price tag of $420, seems reasonable for me.
    but im wondering how much does a ES intel i7 720qm cost?

    how come we can't choose the color option for the i7 equipped lappies, or is the black the new "standard" for i7s and then we have to wait a while for red then white etc. ?

    BTW: Diaz2010 i rep'd ya :)

    No it will not. The core 2 duo and i7 use different sockets.

    You can choose it fine from my side...

    Don't go to the i7 laptop section. Just go to the SXPS 16's page and choose the last configuration: it has the i7 with colors.

    Thanks ikjadoon...I figured the first option was it, the USB thing threw me off tho...

    Also, you don't see any color options when trying to go through the SXPS 16 page in the Dell EPP site. You can only see the options as ikjadoon stated above.

    Yeah, that USB thing was weird. It is definitely there on purpose, I mean, there was no need to even edit that page with the new lineup (only new processor).

    EPP: how much of a discount does that net you? Can you combine that with other discounts?

    ~Ibrahim~

    EDIT: Glad I ordered the i7: the replacement hard drive they sent me for my sig rig was 5400RPM. Ugh, that would've been a huge disappointment.

    EPP will get you 7% off, but they don't offer any colors and their "upgrades" sot more than the regular side...so if you want anything above what they are offerning, it ends up being similar (or more) in price.

    We will see about the Blutooth thing because I just placed my order!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

    I went ahead and ordered from the regular site. Since there is no interest for a year, plus they are offering 3% off (on top of the $449 savings) when you sign up with their financing (12 mo, free interest if paid off by then), I saved more by going this route. Also, I was able to get a white SXPS 16. :D Let's just hope it doesn't have the stains like some people have received.

    I have been hesitant to order ever since the SSD was taken away, but with the i7 coming, I was willing to get it and replace the HDD later. Thankfully I don't have to now. (I've got a bazillion spare HDD's now...I didn't want another one).

    Anyways, I've got this coming by Oct 26th (according to them):
    i7 720QM
    256GB SSD
    RBGLED 16"
    Bluray burner
    4GB 1333 RAM
    DW 370 blutooth (USB?)
    3 yr complete car + lo Jack

    pus the standard:
    5300 wifi
    9-cell battery
    regular audio
    ATI 4670 :D

    Some fun times are ahead!!!!

    I don't think there is reason enough, but is there any point to create a Dell Studio XPS 1645 thread? I fail to see what differences there would be and then people would ask the same questions again in that thread that are answered in here.

    Typing special characters: can someone PM Joker with that info? I can't seem to find it, but it should be useful enough!

    I don't know much (anything) about computer so forgive me if this question is naive... I have a Dell SXPS16 with a Intel P8700 CPU and an ATi M Rad 4670 GPU... with the mobile i7 now out for the SXPS16... would I be able buy a i7 720QM (or 820), take out my old P8700, put in the new i7 CPU and expect it all to work (I know it would void the warranty)? Oh yeah since I know nothing about computers, how hard would this be if it is in fact possible? Is it even worth it? What would the performance boost be (mostly for games and programs like Adobe Encore, Ps, etc). Thanks.

    Unfortunately, you can't put an i7 processor in a motherboard designed for the Core 2 Duo: they use different sockets. :(

    Besides the physical issues, Nehalem (i7) uses quite a different core logic, completely removing the north bridge by integrating it into the processor.

    In short: sorry, no. :(

    for the ppl worried about the DW 370, if you search for it in the dell website you'll find that it's a built in card. So i'm guessing that shouldn't be a problem. This is what is says:

    Dell
    2.4 GHz Wireless 370 Bluetooth (2.1 + EDR) Mini-Card for Select Dell Latitude E-Family Laptops / Precision Mobile WorkStations

    The new i7 option finally made me decide for the Studio XPS 16. This will be my first Dell since about 5 years of continuous HP use, I hope I'm not disappointed.

    Anyway, my status changed to "In production" this morning but it still won't give me a delivery estimate, how long should expect it to take? I've never ordered anything custom from Dell before.

    This is what I ordered:

    Wait, that "1 320-8335 Premium FHD WLED Display, Obsidian Black, 2.0 MP Webcam" is the RGBLED right? because that's what I ordered, does it just have a funny part name or should I be calling and setting them right?

    I know this, but for some reason Dell changed it's description. If you look back through the thread there is probably 10 other people asking the same question. If it's the wrong screen I apologize, I didn't even look back, but I've been on the forums long enough to see a lot of people ask the same exact question.

    I ordered mine with a RGBLED screen on Saturday, and my statement shows "part number: 320-8341" with a description of "16.0 inch Wide Screen 16:9 1080p Full HD RGBLED LCD, W/2.0 MP, XPS1645"

    You might want to call customer service/sales to verify what screen you have since so many people have had different things...I know I would want that peace of mind.

    Just got my SXPS 16 from the Outlet last week and I am sure grateful to the forum for the all the great info. I got the A10 BIOS from the ftp site the very day it was released and it cured my Seagate hard drive clunking noise that folks were reporting. (500GB 7200rpm) Maybe it's just me, but I don't notice the flicker thing as much on the RGBLED now either.

    All those comments about it running so hot prompted me to get a Zalman cooler and undervolt the P8600. After several days' work, what started at 165/123/134°F in the 4670 and 145/143°F in the core now idles "cool as a cucumber" with 98/93/102°F and 83/83°F, respectively. I noticed in playing with the unit during this process that heat evacuation is dramatically affected when the screen blocks the rear vent (a design "accident"?), so if I'm going to run something high-load for a long time I think that I'll either keep the screen at a 45° angle or tell the OS to do nothing when I close the lid, and close it (assuming the keyboard won't heat up too much and put the screen at risk. Probably not an issue, anyone know?)

    Can't wait to read about you folks with the i7. :cool:

    Yeah the lid design is crazy (Dells form over function). My palmrests, touchpad and keyboard are scorcio whilst prolonged gaming sessions. If I close my lid to 45° not only do my internal temps drop significantly but the external temps are cool to the touch! (before anyone says anything, I am already undervolting, added AS5 and raise the rear of the laptop)

    AS5 = Arctic Silver 5, Thermal paste. The paste Dell used is carp plus their application of the paste looked like it had been carried out by blindfolded monkeys.
    I replaced the paste on the CPU and GPU

    But it voids your warranty.

    AS5 drops usually 3-5C on desktop CPUs (which also come with some gunk). Of course, the worse the gunk, the better AS5 will be. :)

    I play all the Source games (HL2, L4D, etc) at 1920x1080 maxed flawlessly. Prototype (new game, very graphicly demanding) at 1920x1080 maxed, WoW maxed, CoD4 maxed, BF2 maxed, UT3,etc. Deadspace is going on soon as well.

    It's nice to hear this about a P8600, as I didn't drop bigger bucks on a higher-end T series chip. Guess the extra GPU power really helps!

    That is definitely weird, but good to hear that they didn't screw up and set your EDD back. Now you can sleep easy. ;)

    I noticed that Dell updated their website when building a new SXPS 16...the DW 370 (USB module) is now in a seperate section under "+ Internal Bluetooth Device"

    Everything else below that is listed under the section that is titled "+ Bluetooth Accessories (device above required)"

    So it looks like you were correct, Ibrahim, and I ordered the right item. :)

    Thanks so much! I was waiting on a good reply! I'm definitely getting this laptop now. With the same specs as you, besides the 5300 wifi card. For $1100 :)

    Glad it worked out, Rifter. :)

    @Ajston

    I used to be an AVG guy, but I'm going to try out Microsoft Security Essentials.
