1)Call 800-283-2210 = this is the DPA phone number so don't get worried

    2)Follow prompt #3

    3)Now, select business/epp selection #2

    4)Track order option #1

5)Then do it again - track order option #1

    Hi,

I'd ordered a studio xps 16 laptop on October 29th. According to the order status line, my order was in the boxing stage with an estimated shipping date of Nov 10. When I checked back today, the order is still in the boxing stage and now it no longer mentions the shipping date (your order is in production in the boxing stage. That's all the information I have). Is it normal to have a couple of days delay on the estimated shipping date? Should I still expect it to arrive by the EDD of 16 Nov?

I'd appreciate if you can share your experiences. Thanks!

Update on the card reader: Tech came out, replaced the MOBO. He was a little bit hasty when putting it back together, I had to finish "snapping" the bottom plate back in place. Had to update the BIOS, but other than that, didn't have to update any drivers. And, of course, the card reader works.

    Dell rocks.

Anyone here knows how to make my laptop sleep by hitting Fn+F1? I'm using windows 7 prof and the power settings say that hitting the sleep button should put it to sleep but every time i do Fn+F1 it goes to hibernate?

    Thanks

Thanks that did the trick. However, every time I resume, the touch pad just freezes up. I have to put the system to hibernate and back to get it working again. Anyone having a similar problem? I'm using Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and A11 BIOS version.

    Thanks

I have the same config and I do not have any issues. Try restarting the computer, and if the problem is still there try uninstalling and reinstalling the touchpad driver.

How cna I disable the Consumer IR receiver????

When I have my screen blanked like a screen saver, whenever I use my TV remote hte laptop see's the IR signals and turns on again.

I went into the device manager but every Consumer IR device does NOT let me right click and Disable. Only Uninstall .. and if I do that it reinstalls the next time I boot up

Any ideas? I will go to dell support for the answer but I know it will be comical while they 1) try to figure out what i mean 2) guess at an answer

Hi, I need some help. I ordered a refurb XPS 1640 from Dell Outlet. The description on my order page, and in the 'order acknowledged' e-mail says that it has an RGB LED. However, I got the 'order confirmed' e-mail today, and on my order status page on Dell's website the display is detailed as:

    R6TTW Module,Liquid Crystal Display 16,Full High Definition,Low Cost,1640

with no mention of 'RGB' or 'red, green, blue'. So, I want to know, is that R6TTW indeed the RGBLED part? Thanks for your help in advance.

No one cares that their TV remote control wakes their PC up if the monitor is off?

I have resorted to a piece of blue painters tape over the IR receiver. What a crappy solution.......... please help !

Well, it's not a problem for me, but I'd say the first thing I would do is to set the IR Receiver, in device manager, to not wake the PC from sleep.

thank you for this! There are about 5 different drivers that all have a hand in the IR receiver, since it is not a normal IR data driver. The one you mentioned is the only one that is able to be DISabled!! The "location" line you provided is what made the difference in locating it- i did not find it previously,

    thank you !! :D

hi I ordered mine with C2D T9600 2.8 Ghz because the i7 isn't available where I live. I will be using this laptop mainly for photoshop, CAD, surfing and lightweight gaming. Do you think I should wait until the i7 becomes available or will the T9600 suffice?

The T9600 should suffice as I have the T9550 and do 3D CAD work and gaming. The processor is fine... the 4670 ATI graphics card will be the one you want too

Okay, thanks for the clear answer :) I think that the 4670 was the only graphic option available. But I only have 4GB of ram because DDR3 ram is too expensive atm, when the prices drop I'll probably upgrade to 8GB. I've heard that more RAM is always appreciated in CAD world.

quick question about my SXPS1640. I purchased this from a guy on Craigslist a couple months back and am unsure about the warranties he may have purchased. on Dell it shows this is what I have:

    Your Current Services:
Warranty Type Start Date End Date
    C, NBD ONSITE 7/15/2009 7/15/2010
    P, XPS TECH SUPPORT 7/15/2009 7/15/2010

NBD Onsite is Next Business Day onsite I take it, so what does this entail? Is it the same as NBD onsite repair? As in if something goes wrong I get NBD to get it fixed? Or is it just phone support by NBD? Thank you.

Hi guys..Im about to purchase a Dell XPS 1640 from a reseller..has the following specs:

    2.8ghz T9600
    Blu-Ray/DVD Combo
    15.6 WLED 1920*1080
    4GB DDR3 RAM
    500GB 7200RPM
    ATI 4670 1 GB

for $1650 USD, but it says factory recertified..

Anyone here has a FR set? Do i have to be worried about getting a FR set? And is it worth the price?

forgot to mention that i dont live the US..
    The Core i7 config costs around $2200 here..whereas its $1749 in Dell.com
The P8700 config costs $1690..compared to $1299 at the website

so on my side im getting a pretty good bargain. just that, i don't know whether its "scratch and dent" recertified or "cancelled ordered" recertified.

Just need some feedback here if anyone has got a dell refurbished laptop, especially this one

I guess with the pricing being different it's hard for me to say for sure, but that really looks like a rip off to me. For much cheaper here you can get an Asus with a much better GPU and better CPU, and a better Dell for not much more.

I have a xps 1640 with the RGB screen, and i have CRAZY dust behind the glass. At first I thought it was somthing on the front of the glass, and after trying to clean it and inspecting it further, it is behind the glass. It wasnt a problem initially, but now on the right side of screen its getting worse. More dust is getting in, and it seems like there is a little space between the glass and the lid, almost like it is not fully/properly sealed and thats where dust is getting in? Im wondering if anyone has taken OFF the glass from they're screen in order to try to clean it? Worse case, i will call dell to replace but this is my 2nd one allready, so wondering if anyone has taken off the glass to blow the dust out and basically clean from the inside? thanks!!!!!

I guess that means if there is an issue and an on-site technician has to come, he will be there by the next business day. Like a motherboard or screen replacement.

NBD is Next Business Day service that is offered by Dell. They aren't two separate entities. I think they do contract out the work to a separate company, but that's beside the point.

Already Disabled, but still waking my system with signals from other remote controls. Really frustrating ..... I will spend an hour in the dell technical chat just for kicks, when I have time. I wonder if they can fix it. Doubtful..

HEY. did you guys know the eSata port by the charging port is also a USB? I thought I only had two USB (on the left side) until I accidentally plugged my keyboard dongle into the eSata port. I was astonished that it fit, and even more so whne I heard the "bleepbleep" USB connection sound from vista. HA! Glad I still have 3 usb ports :) On further inspection it IS clearly labeled with the USB and power symbols .. :p

I dont know about you but in windows vista, I can right click the power icon in the tray, choose Dell Battery meter, flip to the Battery Life tab and there is a checkbox labeled "Disable battery charging".

I never looked in the BIOS for it since this checkbox always did it for me (1640)

I use this all the time since I want my stock battery to last. I charge it up to 100% and then check this box since I stay plugged in almost all the time, unelss I am hibernating to move between work and home.

It will reset to "charging" on the next reboot

I finally made it here after 45 days hanging in the "Order Status" thread.

In the process of installing Windows 7, so I haven't had much opportunity to play yet, but has anyone else experienced a subtle lopsidedness? Without the battery, it's noticeable - with the battery, it's worse. Pisses me off after waiting so long.

Is your laptop missing some "feet"? Should be very sturdy. Only thing I notice is if I use the Cooler To Go I have to keep an eye out for the ridge that runs next where the batter goes.

All feet are present and accounted for. After flipping it over and inspecting everything, removing and re-seating the battery, I "wrangled" it by hand and now it sit perfectly.

Disabling the battery wouldn't do much, I would assume every modern electrical device would simply stop charging when it's fully charged. Leaving the battery in while fully charged in a laptop is quite possibly the worst thing you could do, full charge + heat is damaging. if you have your laptop plugged in at a considerable amount of time, it's best to take the battery out. As usual, read the article at Battery University.

I agree heat is bad .. but that is why I don't let the computer continue to feed it current. Once the battery goes below 100% it is then given current again to get it back up. this continual topping is what I'm trying to avoid.

I would take it out but I want it there incase the power cord is ripped out or my electricity goes out, not to mention inconvenience of inserting and removing the battery or carrying it seperately whenever I move from place to place. So not letting it charge 24/7 is the easiest compromise I know for battery life. Removing it altogether, or purchasing a used battery is a better idea for sure, agreed!

It's not so much the heat from the charging current, the laptop itself puts out heat. And modern Li-ons loves being topped up frequently. It'll be easier if I just link the article, I'm welcomed to be proved otherwise.

    http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm

I have to say though, even if you treat the battery like crap, it'll take at least a year before you start to see adverse effects.

    i know that..

"It will reset to "charging" on the next reboot"
..and that's why i'm looking for another solution. 1645 BIOS has it. i don't want to click it all the time. and yeah the reason why i would like to do this is that a heard that having the battery on charge all the time is not good for the battery's life. i don't want to remove the battery either (i have 9 cell) for the reasons Ryaske mentioned + without battery (lifting) it goes really badly hot while gaming.

    Width: 15.15" (384.9mm)
    Height: 0.95" (24.1mm) front / 1.34" (33.95mm) back
    Depth: 10.02" (254.6mm)

is anyone having any problems with power throttling since changing to A11,the GPU and CPU drivers?

My laptop is undervolted and before the updates it would never peak 70c. Now it does by quite a bit and I suffer from power throttling. I've also noticed my undervolting acting weird. Despite it being fixed at 2.39ghz I've seen it jump to 2.53ghz (not actually possible) and ranges below that.

just doing a stress test on the cpu and the temps are way higher. used to be 55-60 now its like 64-68

    Hi Guys,

I am a proud owner of a new 1640, can you please clear up a few points from the previous posrs please?

    1. To conserve the life of the battery do I check the 'disable battery charging' or not?

    2. I have ordered the free Win7 upgrade from Dell, is it worth it or should I try and get a non Dell copy?

    3. If I do go for the Dell win 7 version how does one remove the bloatware?

    4. Should I be looking to add any additional drivers or make any amendments to any settings to ensure I get the optimum performance from my machine? (I don't use it for gaming)

    5. Any other tips/help would be greatly appreciated

    1. u can check it and i could help a bit (but not sure), if u use it as a desktop replacement for long time it's the best to remove the battery..
    2. it's free, why wouldn't it worth it? :)
    3. do a clean install so no bloatware will be installed so no bloatware removal will be necessary.
    4. get the latest ati driver (from ati site + mobility modder), install dell's webcam software from the dvd u get with windows 7. also if u have seagate hdd and it makes clicking noise u can also download an fw for it from dell and upgrade it.
