Vista's pretty much equivalent to XP for performance for a while now.

The only slot loading recorder I know of is Panasonic's UJ -225B but that is IDE / Atapi. In one of the (many) Studio XPS 16 reviews I've read there's a quote saying Dell will offer a writer once they are available; I assume they require a SATA drive.

It depends if you ordered anything else with it. After production of the laptop, Dell boxes the laptop.. then ships it off to another "merge" facility where the laptop (all boxed up) is combined with other parts of your order (screen, mouse, etc) in an even bigger box.

If they are waiting on another part of your order, there may be a delay here (if its a small item they might ship it bu it self).

If you didnt order anything else, then i assume, they have a way to fast-track (or completely by-pass) the merge step.

Mr Nick, thanks for the response.

One fianl question, I have read through the forum and seen this asked but not answered. Is the GPU socketed? I would love to have the option to upgrade.

If anyone in the UK wants one of these XPS 1640 systems then Tesco Direct are now selling them. I've placed an order (due tomorrow) to see what it is like and if I should keep my (better spec'd) order with Dell..

    i can't decide. . . 1080p or 720p?!

720 would be a ton cheaper especially with this Best Buy deal, but i'm used to my 1680x1050 on my 15.4" right now that it might feel TOO BIG

I've always understood the boxing stage just to be a cover for shipping from China to the destination country. This usually takes 1 to 2 days, then it's forwarded from a staging facility in that country to your destination, which is where normal shipping times occur. 1 - 3 days in the US for ground.

Does the T9600 produce more heat than the T9400?

How much weight does the TV tuner add?

Where would they add the ports for the tuner? The back?

I ordered a Targus notebook bag and mouse with my 6140 (Feb 22nd). The bag and mouse shipped 24 hours after i ordered. Looks like the new lappy will arrive in the A.M.

So I think Dell ships the items as they have them, and they don't hold up an order waiting for all the pieces. Thats my experience at least

Woah...thanks for posting that link! I had no idea.

Dang, that's pretty cheap. AHHHH!!!! What's the catch? That looks identical to what I paid over $1400 for, except I had one speed grade faster CPU.

Umm...it's got Blu Ray, same everything else.

That screen is a big SELLING point IMO. LED backlit, perfect resolution for the size.

I was leaning towards an Asus n80 -X5 for the same price, only I'd have to add an external Blu Ray player to it, which I'd rather not do. My two big complaints with the 1640 are the ATi graphics (sooooo wish it were Nvidia, as it's impossible to force install the regular drivers-you need to rely on third parties), and the dippy cooling design-but a notebook cooler should take care of that.

    AAAAAH!!!! What do I do?

Oh great. Now my ESD has moved from Feb. 6 (ordered Jan 13) to March 10. Yes, that's 3 weeks waited already, now to wait an additional 5 weeks.

Two months after ordering, there'll be the first changes to the specs and rebates and I don't even have the laptop yet! :(

For the people that have received their missing cd's can you tell me how long the whole procedure took. I have a feeling that I'm dealing with a half wit that is taking care of my case, she insists that I should check my box again and seems to be delaying the whole process.

I just called my DELL rep. He said, the production of the XPS 16 has been suspended (at the manufactury in Poland?) due to a problem with the wireless cards. Shipment of the ordered machines is planned for the first week of March. The production should pick up next week again.

Maybe that's why we're all waiting?

Can someone have a look into the HDMI device tabs and make screenshots of all the options?

So far I someone has sent this screnshot but we are missing the details.

Without the tab information for the HDMI device there is no way of knowing which surround formats if any are supported through HDMI!

A rep claimed these were made in Texas? I shudder to think how long it's been since a notebook was made in the U.S.

I got mine I think two days later, but I got two boxes, and neither actually included the software I most needed. Then when I wrote back, she decided it was a 'driver issue' (it wasn't).

Hi all! I'm a new possessor of a SXPS 16. I've ordered it on the 22nd of january and it shipped here in Italy (from Poland) on the 27! Very quick, indeed.

1Yr XPS Premium Warranty Support - Priority Call In and Onsite Support
3Yr XPS Premium Warranty Support - Priority Call In and Onsite Support
    No Accidental Damage Support
Studio XPS 16 Order - Italy

The machine is wonderful: the screen is the best I've ever seen on a laptop and also the gaming performances are quite good.

The problem is that i'm having big overheating issues...on idle the palmrest is always warm, but when playing it becomes really really hot! I used hwmonitor to look at the temperatures: the gpu arrives at 94 C under stress (I used Furmark), then it starts downclocking. Also the processor arrives at 87 C under stress (with Orthos)...and I've already done the undervolt!

I'm sending a mail to dell...I hope they will replace my heat sink...or at least put some Arctic Silver on it!

Try sticking the rear left of the system out over the edge of a desk while it's in use and see if the temps drop drastically. 87c sounds about right-I had 84c running Folding @ Home on both CPUs.

For some reason, Dell designed this so the system's vent is mostly blocked by the screen when it's open. You should see the temps fall by roughly 20 degrees if air is able to at least get somewhat directed downwards by sticking part of it over the edge.

If that works, you could try some sort of laptop cooler or something to raise the back up. With an 87c temp, I doubt the system is defective, other than just the bizarre design decision Dell made to block the vent with the screen.

87C for a 8600 under stress isnt too bad... the U7600 (10 Watt, 1.2 GHz) in my TZ maxes out at 72C under load.

good to know...and what about the GPU? I think that 95 is too high, because it starts downclocking and the palmrest becomes really too hot for me.

Wow that is a really good deal. Correct me if I'm wrong but that's $200 cheaper then the same spec machine from Dell.com? I was wondering if it's possible to add bluetooth later if I do not get it with the system initially?

Seems more like $300ish, if not more, and that's including my EPP discount. I paid over $1400 for mine, and the only difference I see is I had a 2.53GHz/6MB CPU, which added $116ish to the price. It's a nice bump up, but realistically isn't that big of a deal.

I wish this had Nvidia graphics. I'd order again right now if it did :(

EDIT: This puts it at virtually the same price as the Asus n80nv-x5. This has Blu Ray (and a quality drive at that). Also a bigger screen...but it's got that darned ATi video, which I'm even more opposed to after trying to actually work with the notebook version.

She's trying to contact the factory and will get back to me when she got news....dell likes to screw up its customers, doesnt it?

Maybe my eyes have deceived me but it looks like the bluray option is now $170 instead of $150 from Dell's (US) website. I'm pretty close to ordering this system just trying to figure out if I should customize from Dell or now this Best Buy option looks legit. Only thing I wanted to add was bluetooth which the Best Buy version does not include but if I can add that later then that's fine too.
