I think they will work, but I'm sure they'll give you worse/inaccurate colors. Since the icc profiles I got from the calibrator are specifically created for my RGBLED screen.

Have you tried undervolting them and seeing if they run different voltages/temperatures after? I know that when I used CPUGenie it lowered my core temperatures through lowering voltage. I remember reading that they run a standard voltage on all of the CPU's but that they all should be adjusted because none of them are exactly the same. As for the GPU maybe the same thing would apply?

I could not get CPUgenie to run on the 64bit Vista. Is there another version somewhere or are you running 32?

does anyone have a method for cleaning the dust out of the speaker grill holes? over time they are getting more and more filled and its driving me crazy. ive tried using a vacuum, a dust can, rubbing alcohol with a q-tip, and even that tacky poster hanging stuff which worked the best out of the four methods, but there must be an easier way! my friend has the m1330 and she has the same problem. but with the 1640 the grills are so large that its more noticeable.

    anyone have a solution?

Need a favor from Studio XPS 16 users...

Could someone please PM me your IDT Audio Hardware Device ID?

To get this, open Device Manager. Scroll down to your Sound Controller. Open up your IDT device. On the Details tab, use the pull down menu and select Hardware IDs. You will see two entries. Right click on the first and select copy. Then paste it into a PM.

    Thanks!

So buy a Blu Ray player.

No. For one thing, I'm sure it's against the terms of service, and at best your post should get deleted.

You can play blu ray films with the Media player classic. For the codecs, I've downloaded the Satsuki decoder pack. No need an additionnal player! :)

    thanks a bunch guys...but i have another problem :D

I am having some concerns regarding the svchost.exe. Now I'm not sure if I'm on the right track but this is what happened.

I did a system restore. Everything went fine the comp booted up and loaded the settings. I noticed though that the hard drive activity light kept blinking and the system became somewhat slower. So I reversed/undid the restore and went back to the original setting. But the problem of the activity light blinking didn't go away. Before when I would boot the light would start of blinking but then it would become normal but now it just constantly blinks..another thing i noticed is that the fan's constantly on as well. I went into task manager and the overall cpu usuage is normal (<10 percent) when the system is idle eventhough though the activity is constantly blinking.

In the task manager there are many instances of svchost application. however there is one that is at close to 100,000K in terms of its memory (private working set). Now when i end process this one application the activity light becomes normal but the fans still running..I guess my question is if I should do something about this situation and if so what can I do.

    thanks

    Max

Here is a SS of my task manager, what you're describing sounds normal. My HDD light constantly blinks, I think it's perfectly normal. Sorry about the size but when I resized it you couldn't read everything.

hey thanks a bunch man. that puts this to ease. :). I noticed though that the fan starts after 10 mins from windows startup. I tracked and found that once the CPU temp hits 38 deg cel. the fan goes up a notch and it stays at that level constantly and doesn't go down a notch or up. Is what i'm experiencing normal?

NP. I deleted the pic from my original because it was so big. I don't think it's abnormal. I really haven't paid that much attention to how much my fan runs when I'm not gaming. I check it often when I'm playing games, but that's about it. Here is a SS of my current temps with normal stuff open.

my temps are about the same as that. running a game is obviously much higher though. my fan runs at what i would guess is about 20% all the time. it never stops. anyone else care to share their fan experience?

So I've been on my new 1640 with the SSD for about 8 hours straight since I got it today. Upon closing the lid for the first time, I realized that "wow, Dell killed a cow just for me". That leather strip is a really nice touch and I almost wish there was one below the keyboard area.

Hmm, I wonder if the Peta wackos are going to try to through paint on my lappy when I show up at the local Starbucks?

Haha! I don't think that will happen ;) Just take care of your nice new lappy, and you'll be good to go!

Actually, it is Geunine Leather (accents), so its not synthetic leather at all, according to Dell's website: ;)

Really? My usual temps are 29-40C (usually 29-33C) for the CPU and 39-46C for the GPU. When playing Warcraft III - DOTA (the most extensive program I use on my 1640), temps for both CPU and GPU only go around 52-55C.

(Using Orthos for 30mins, both my CPU cores run at 67C temp.)

    My 1640 has P8600.

Anyone ordered a remote for this laptop yet? On Dell's website, I see the option of ordering a remote for the XPS 13 but not the XPS 16. Anyone know if the XPS 13 remote is the same thing as the one for the 16?

What kind of a delivery time frame is there? The order was placed 3/18 and the original ship date is 4/16. Any idea how much sooner it will ship? Speakers, headphones, and mouse have shipped too, but not the sound card or laptop.

I placed my order on 3/18 as well with an estimated delivery date of 4/13 (2 day shipping), and my order shipped yesterday. The estimated delivery date has now changed to 3/25!

Actually, its good forum etiquette to *thumbnail* images...You can do that via Photobucket, Imageshack, and even via inserting the image thru the options in Manage Attachments, when posting ;)

It would be nice...My screen also gets *crazed* with what it considers to be larger images..and scrolling up and down is a lovely chore...

Be nice and *thumbnail* your images, peep's :D

*I have no idea how to thumbnail though, anyway to show me a quick tutorial?

No worries, it's all good! ;) And, sure here are a few guides for you! :D

    Here is the Photobucket Guide
Thank you, Manic Penguins for this guide!

Here is the Image Shack Guide

Thank you, ATG for this guide!

And, to do it right in your *post*: Another option is NBR build-in image attachments - you need to switch from "Quick Replay" to "Advanced". To do that simply click on "Go Advanced" button, right under the "Quick Reply" box. (again, thanks..ATG) :D

    Hope that helps you! :D

I took the plunge tonight, and got one. Got the T9550 with a 256GB SSD and Blu-Ray. Right now, it's due to ship on 4/20. I hope I get the bump up like a few of you guys have (who knows though, with the SSD).

    I can't wait for it!

Mine (with the 256SSD) was delivered one day past their Est. Delivery Date... not bad at all.

The 4/20 seems like a long time.. which country are you shipping to??? Mine was ordered and delivered in about 2wks (in Canada).
