If there's a case like this then it's no longer the OS's fault, is it? If a software company claims its product to be fully compatible with Vista 64-bit but it's actually not, then I would consider this as misinformation and fault of that software company, not Microsoft nor (64-bit) Vista's.

Oh it will boot off eSata, but you have to change the boot order in the bios, no way to quickly just select via F12 boot menu. Silly Really!

I keep an eye on Slickdeals. My advice would be to set up a 'deal alert' and then you will get emailed if certain keywords come up in a thread. There is also a feed on Twitter for the Dell Outlet here. Some things on that Twitter thread are crap, beware.

Does anyone know if the T9900 CPU will work in the 1640?

I never said any of this was Microsoft or the OSes "fault", just that there are a lot of incompatible programs.

It has the same wattage as the T9800 and should work, but I wonder if the BIOs will work, or if it's only setup to recognize the T9800?

That's too much of an exaggeration, unless you mostly use very old or outdated software.

Folks, I just sent a video to youtube showing how I oppened the screen, it should be up soon.

Along with my friend Anakin, but using no light sabers, the screen of the 1640 was oppened, and the terrible dust particles removed!

I am in need of help, you may have seen my post
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=379249

BUT, I just got my XPS Studio 16 a few days ago, and my card reader doesn't read my SDHC cards, and I have gone round and round with DELL, and they tell me that their manual is wrong and the Studio XPS 16 does not support SDHC cards.

I have shown them the thread and they still don't believe me... Who here has a 64 bit Vista OS Studio XPS 16 and successfully using SDHC cards?

I need pictures or screen shots of the SDHC card properties when inserted... THANKS.

Had the 1640 for a week now and LOVE IT. 64 bit, no issues with any of the programs I use. Love the keyboard, love the low heat.

I have been on an XPS M1210 that ran 60-75c Idle, so can't believe a 2.93, 8GB can run average 45c.

Finally found and received an awesome leather sleeve today, took a chance that the Macbook Pro 17"" sleeve would fit and it does perfectly! (with 9 cell battery taken out.)

Not cheap, but worth it I think. Great quality. Here are some pics:

I just noticed that there is now a TV tuner option for the 1640 in the US. Bah. I wonder if we can get it and install it manually.

Very nice, Dizzy! I ordered the ACME leather sleeve from Dell, I hope it fits with the 9 Cell in it.

I'm getting a T9900 soon since a Dell rep told me it's fully compatible. A guy on here even said he's got a QX9300 in his 1640, but I wouldn't feel comfortable with that kind of wattage/heat, for long term.

I also decided to go the route of X25-E 60GB for OS & Apps/external HDD's for storage.

I'm not sure I need 8GB RAM atm, so I might wait until prices come down a little and then jump.

Nice sleeve Dizzywizzy. Thanks for the pics (and for making my choice harder). I've been looking at the Booq stuff since I noticed the size of the 17" macbook pro's are about the same size as our SXPS 16's.

For people who are having problems with the heat SXPS 16: I just undervolted my SXPS and managed to achieve a temp drop from 89c to 57c! (32c difference) Even the palmrest has a "okay" temp. Of course it all depends on your processor tolerances but I think it is worth trying!

    More info here: Guide Undervolting

I did try the undervolting and did get a small help in temps at 100% CPU output but no difference at idle and I rarely have this machine cranking. So since I was having issues getting the RM Clock Utility to reliably start-up with each boot I gave up. Anyone have any tips? It was really strange, sometimes it would boot up fine and others it would say something about the 64bit file not being available.

Are you using Windows 7? Should be getting my SSD in a week and a half, and wondering if I should put W7 on it, or stay with Vista. I'm not having any problems with Vista, so unless it's a noticeable difference, I may not bother yet.

What is the best way to clean the screen on the SXPS16?

This particular screen is completely different than what im used to. On my VAIO TZ i wipe surface dust away with a microfibre cloth; then, for grease or tougher, dried or 'baked-in' stains, i can just apply some moisture (breathing on it) and rub it away with a finer microfibre cloth. Ive been doing this for almost 2 years and the LCD still looks brand new with 0 scratches.

But, on the 16 i can seem to get the dried up gunk away easily. Is the acetate overlap strong enough to handle Windex or other glass cleaners? Any homebrew cleaning solutions? thanks

Sorry guys I need help again! I just figured out that the hinge lights on my replaced screen aren't working! The red colour works (when battery level is critical) but the white lights are permanently turned off! Previous the white light was on when battery was charging (very usefull when the laptop is shut down). Anyone have any ideas? Did the technicians in the Dell repaircentrer just forgot to plug in a cable or do they have to replace my screen again? :( Maybe something with the Bios?

    Thanks for any help

Think there is a way to replace the stock fan in the laptop with a better one? I've undervolted and put Artice Silver 5 on the heat sinks, but it's still not quite as cool as I'd like it to be. I took those screens out of the bottom of the laptop too. I think the fan is 5v 0.5amps

Jeroentje91's link contained a link to a 64 bit file you need. I used the link and the process and took my 1640 from 75 to 53 C. I ran Orthos for over an hour before deciding it was stable. Later, I'll run it for the full three hours and comment more.

I did spend nearly eleven hours running tests on every multiplier. I haven't stressed it in IRL since the adjustments, but I'll post if there are any problems.

what are your temps now and how cool are you looking to actually run?

what kind of difference in temp did you get after the AS5? I just did the AS5 myself and I'm seeing about 2-4C on the 2 cores and about 1-3C on the GPU.. thats just my initial observation though.. hopefully I'll get a bit better/stabilize after a few thermal cycles and it "breaks in"..

Hehe I think you mean Wlepse, my undervolting using Vista 64bit worked okay. RMclock is just awesome!

Regarding to my other question I asked before: Are there different connectors for the white and red leds in the hinge lights circle? My white lights (on when battery is charging) are not working, the red ones just work well. (when battery level is critical)

I did d/l the 64bit drivers and can get the program to run every now and again but occasionally it will say the drivers are not found or something to that effect. I did run tests and found I could drop temps a decent amount so i would like to get this running. I tried both modes of start-up and they are both intermittent at best.

I always used Displex to remove scratches from the display of my phone. It worked okay. However that was hard plastic and I don't know if that will work on the top of the lid. Probably the scratches will be removed but the glossy finish wil be gone because it works like polish. I'm affraid you can't remove them okay, thats why I ordered an Invisible shield. (Applying a invisible shield to my phone also "removed" the visibility of the scratches) so maybe that is an idea?

I noticed only a 1-2C difference initially on the CPU. I haven't ran any other test since.

I'd like it to be comfortable for my hands to be on the laptop... cool as possible I guess.

Random question, but has anyone tried linking their type of wireless card with their temperatures? Normally the wireless card produces heat in some laptops where it's put close to other parts so can anyone confirm if say the Intel wireless card produces more heat than the Dell one or something?

Well i finally got around to plugging in a pair of headphones into my SXPS16 (doing a Skype call).. and, WOW.. what a NOISY output, there is this constant whine/buzz/humm (not sure how to describe it). But, its a horrible headphone output.

Im not expecting audiophile quality, but, it should at least be static/noise free... like the output on my old laptop.

Maybe its just mine?? My other laptop (vaio tz) has zero noise/static from the headphone jack. It doesnt sound very good, but, it is clear.

This isnt that big of a deal for me, but, its kind of a bummer :( ... (i also have fairly expensive audio equipment, so, im attuned to picking up stuff like that)
