guys, I got a serious issue of my xps15 9550, 1080FHD
Terrible response time issue! ghosting!
I play PES2016 (I played this game on PC and notebook since 2008, and never has this problem) on xps15, and everything showing dragging shadows! when player moving and ball moving, It hurts my eyes really bad.
I set my game right, using Nvidia setting, this has been done million times, can not go wrong!
updated latest driver no problem!
all software working well!
the Fraps shows 60 in game!
After I plugged with my 24" dell monitor or TV, issue's gone!
Without any doubt, must be this screen, not because of driver or any other software!
I replaced the machine once already, same issue on new one as well!!!
This 1080p screen is made by Sharp, model 1453.
is this screen has really terrible response time? or just I got hit by the same luck twice?
Has anyone has the same issue? and tested the response time?
-
-
The screen itself just has a ****ty response time. Not your computer.

Here's the ghosting issues that I've been having

What is the first and last number of both service tag and serial number if applicable? I think there are two patterns for factory etc.

what did you do then? -
Dell can not give the number of the response time for the screen, but there must be a standard for the market! This issue really hurts customers! -
I have the FHD sharp screen and I am not noticing any ghosting. I have just played an hour of CS GO and it was great.
Could I be missing it or is it really visible?
I am the sort of person who is really bothered by low frame rates and stutter so I would imagine I would notice this if my screen suffered from it -
-
can you run HWinfo for testing your monitor and post your report? I will upload my for comparision. Thanks a million! -
Can't really tell the issue from here. Needs to compare with others -
I am not at the machine right now but I will upload a HWinfo later for you all.
I bought the i5 with 8gb/32gb+1tb base. I then ripped the terrible drives out and installed a 512gb evo 850 and a 960gb crucial m500 ssd's I had available. I then gave the laptop a fresh install of windows 10 so I had none of the dell bloat -
-
FHD shouldn't have terrible response time, but it won't be gaming class either. QHD has reported 40-50ms response time.
-
-
Dell can not admit this issue, simply they can not tell which one is defect over the production line.
I guess only thing we can do is test it right after purchase, replace or return until having the good one!!! -
Have a look at that reddit thread : https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/3vdv7h/dell_xps_15_9550_fhd_response_time/

Can people without ghosting please post information on their panel
-
-
I have the 4K screen but I thought the ghosting on 4K was to be expected...?
I even get ghosting with the Windows loading animation (the spinning dots) but again I'm not sure what to expect with a 4K screen.
Can anyone comment on how their 4K display performs? -
Major reviews almost all got 4k tested, but not FHD, so this problem is not well known.
Dell saying this is not a display problem, and refuse to return or replace anymore! -
p.s. sorry can't post direct message - not enough forums posts -
I've made pictures of the response time of my XPS 15 9550 UHD (with a Galaxy Note 4 with standard exposure setting)
Not bad, but not that good either. -
this is my FHD 1080, easy to see difference. How come Dell says this is normal? -
can anyone who also got 1080p version, test and upload the photos for us to compare!
this is very important evidence to deal with Dell, thanks! -
Hi,
I have the same issue with my Dell XPS15 FHD screen. I've also noticed the problem on the windows boot logo at first (white doots). Then I've tested FIFA 16 and watched some videos on Youtube. I've noticed it without really focussing on it.
I have exactly the same screen as you @ thisisourlunch.
Is this a case for the Dell support? We've paid so much to get a high end laptop and then we have to deal with such a bad response time like it is 2005?
The german notebookcheck website have tested the xps 15 FHD.
They have checked the response time for the FHD screen:
Black to White: 40ms (90% of all screens they've tested were faster then this! average for all notebooks: 30ms )
50 % grey to 80% grey: 62ms (86% of all screens they've tested were faster then this! average for all notebooks: 45,3ms )
So bad!!

I got the same results with that thisisourlunch

But there is still some possibility: Maybe this Germany review also got defected display!
Or every 1080 Sharp display has this issue! but this is unlikely the case, coz i compare with other tested pics, some are better than mine, and not many people are claiming this issue! otherwise Dell should recall all FHD model!
Till today, Dell still refuse to return or replace my xps15, they tested the display and saying no problem! They are not giving customer what exact response time for this FHD screen! -
Same, even UHD have about 40ms response time, and now that I've noticed it, I'm seeing it all the time, and I'm far from my return period, so I need to deal with it.
But that's hard because when I use another computer and I come back to my xps, I saw it immediately
Wish I had seen that weeks ago, I would I've waited for the skylake rMBP -
Mine was delivered earlier today. I will be getting in touch with Dell to see if they will fix the issue by replacing it with a screen that has a better response time or simply give me a refund and i can go elsewhere.

Let me know what happens a15g, I have some ghosting on mine, but it's not as bad as some of the pictures I've seen. I don't have any issues playing BF4, but maybe I'm not too sensitive to that sort of stuff...
-
They pretty much shot me down, claiming it's not an issue.
I will be returning it.
Looks like the wait for this laptop was trying to tell me something.
I get random cracking/pops from the speakers at times and it's pretty annoying. Some distortion when maxing out volume as well. Nooooo thanks. -
This is a problem with 4k panel as well. I also returned a surface book because of the motion blur, it looked almost like pointer trails were enabled.
-
Like many people have stated. I saw the motion blur/ghosting as soon as I saw the windows dots going around on my FIRST startup. It went away just the tiniest bit when the screen seemed to have gotten a tad warmer but still pretty horrible. I told myself if I cant get over/used to it in a few days its going back and today marks my 4th day with it and seeing as to how it still bugs me today as much as it did the first, it's going back for sure.
Other than a Macbook, what are my other options in this price range and form factor? ($1200-1300) -

So far no review yet on the "new ux501" but I highly doubt they gave it a quality 4k panel. I wish they offered a version with a 95%+ srgb fhd screen, it would yield better battery life as well. -
Update.
I talked to dell one more time before dropping off my XPS at UPS and the person I talked to was very very cooperative. He did take over control of my laptop and installed various dell apps to try and cure the problem (though I knew none of it was going to work) and in the end he offered to either replace the part or replace the system. I opted for replacing the system as a whole and hope that it comes back with a non faulty panel, maybe? -
I got my XPS for few days already and all I can say for now is that ghosting is not so bad for me. I barely notice it and I think my brain is starting to get used to it. It's not a bad IPS panel overall (IPS is slow, someone is surprised?). It's just not so good gaming panel, but since it's not a gaming notebook I am fine with it. For now, Diablo 3 and Statecraft 2 are fine on it.

$999.99 is not a premium notebook and you get the same base and display. High price comes from SSD, CPU, GPU in other configuration and not because this is a premium laptop.
I don't know what guys at Notebookcheck wants to prove, but maybe 16% are all other >99%s RGB IPS displays and 84% are all TNs and <75% sRGB IPS aka TN wanabee displays? Are we comparing apples to apples here?
It's just a mediocre IPS panel for gaming (speed wise) but otherwise it's a great display and there is no alternative anyway IMHO. -
-
It's useless dispute. You don't like it, it's not what you wanted. Return it, sell it, buy something else and move along.
XPS 15 is the perfect spot of power, portability, build, look, upgradebility, ports (thunderbolt), centered keyboard. It has its cons, but I didn't find any other laptop like that at $1500 price point. -

Just sold my XPS 15. I'm releaved. Going to wait for the Skylake rMBP with Intel iris pro graphics

#45 & 46, same 1080 FHD 9550 model, these photos were all taken by iphone5, at the same condition, 100%brightness.
my (#46) showed obviously more shadows than my friend (#45), Dell refuse to get my xps15 return, simply saying that it was already been replaced once, and also saying my panel is fine! -
This 1080 panel are not all bad! But seems a large number of customers have serious ghosting issue, which is not in a normal level.
And Dell can not tell why the same panel has different performance?
Yes, XPS15 is not a gaming laptop, but they surely wants to attract gamers by putting GTX960M, so no reason to give such panel. Also, my friend has XPS15 FHD and XPS13 FHD which has no ghosting issue at all!!!
Till today, I'm ok with XPS15 almost everything, maybe some small issue but i think they can be fixed by update, only this ghosting issue is real let down!
I also using Alienware17 and Dell 24" monitor, all IPS, no problem!! Or I should say in my 20 years computer using period, this ghosting issue is really the first time! I didn't even know this word before! -
