I just had a few questions about the XPS 1530, I've never personally bought anything from Dell all though both my sister and my mom have. I'm getting ready to start college in the fall (yeah, there's probably a billion of these threads, sorry) and up until now I've just build my own desktops, but don't really want to mess with a laptop so I was just going to buy one.
1) Does Dell still ship all of their PC's with bloatware pre-installed? If so does the Vista cd that will ship be Dell OEM? Like I mean is the bloatware going to be auto-installed if I format and re-install Vista.
2) I heard that the laptop is a little noisy, would anyone care to comment on this?
Well I guess that's it, thanks..

Yeah I just bought a XPS M1530 as my first laptop for college too and just like you I have always built my own desktops.
1. Mine came with little bloatware just some Google toolbar and Google Desktop software which I uninstalled. It also came with McAffee which I uninstalled as well. Other than that, there really was not much bloat at all. And yes it comes with a Vista DVD, and you could easily reinstall format and reinstall Vista and get rid of the bloatware.
2. The laptop is not noisy at all unless the fan kicks in which is usually when you are playing games or if the CPU gets too hot. -
My 1530 came with bloatware..I simply followed Les's "Dell Clean Install Guide", and then did the "Vista Tweaks & Tips Guide"..and all worked out great
Also, my 1530 doesnt get that loud that often! Sometimes, I will notice when the fan comes on!Otherwise, all is good with it, and I am very happy!
Congrat's on your future purchase!!! -
The bloatware was not too bad. It's easily removed, and the guides on this site to do a reinstall with the included media worked well and can be followed to completely eliminate bloatware altogether.
The laptop generally is quiet. The fan does not kick on that often. That said when it does, it does make some sound vs. other laptops I've owned. I think that's just the nature of the beast with a high CFM small diameter fan. That said, when the fan is not running (which is most of the time) the laptop is utterly silent.
Overall it's a great laptop. -
Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it. I think I will be purchasing the M1530

Welcome to the club. Bloatware seriously is minimal compared to many other Dell laptops I've owned. Everything is easily locatable so it really isn't much of an issue anymore.

not much bloatware
hard drive is a little noisey, its makes like a creeking voice but other then that its quite -
I'm gonna be a freshman in college here too (joined this site to get some pointers in the right direction for my first notebook =])...XPS has a long wait (took me a month), but so far, it's totally worth it. It's a pretty awesome system. To answer your questions...
I'm not an expert by any stretch, but the only bloatware I have noticed so far is the Google desktop/toolbar. Easily removable (or it was for me).
Vista started a little slow initially, but nothing worth complaining about. I looked over some of the tips for optimizing Vista's performance and followed some of them.
The noise seems fine / minimal to me. It does seem to get a little hot...I haven't installed any games yet so I'm not sure about that yet.
So far though it's great! I would highly recommend it to any college kid.
