Hope to god this fixes the random freeze/crashes I have been having, seems related to using USB devices (like my mouse's wheel being used) rather than YouTube videos though.

Any chance this fixes GPU throttling? Like gaah said in another thread, the BIOS update does also update the GPU BIOS date to 03/28/2010. I guess either way I'll find out later.

I'm not sure if it's related, but I updated my video drivers...then my bios. Rebooted and everything has been tinted, the HDD password screen was orange and green the starting windows 7 screen was orange and now everything is green.

Pull out the power adapter and the battery, then hold the power button for about 10 seconds. Power up again and everything should be alright.

@Topic: I got the A09 up and running some hours ago. No difference till now ;)

    hahhahaha :D :D :D
At 32M the FIRST value is finished calculating at 9s!! Superpi will do this 25 more times for your final score  (i believe its 25)

I ran 1M which used to be the standard (or maybe it still is? i dont know)

I installed new video drivers and the new bios. My screen does not work anymore, I had to connect an external monitor to see anything. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

I don't know. I guess so. With any new computer I run Furmark to see if it can handle that. Then I run Prime95 Blend and Small FFTs to see if it can handle that and then I run 'em both at the same time to see if it can handle that. On a laptop, if it can handle this much load and run at full speed without going ka-boom then I'm happy enough. I usually don't test for very long. Maybe 10 minutes max on a laptop.

The D830 I recently purchased can handle Prime95+Furmark at full speed without throttling but the XPS 1645 still can not from what I've heard. Post a ThrottleStop log file so other users will know what to expect.

It would be nice if Dell left their overly technical garbage that actually has little information in the changelog and summarized each point for us.

For example "Update Processor Power Management(PPM) from 0.60 to 0.63-1." If they are going to word it like that, they could at least tell us all the changes that happened between 0.60 and 0.63-1.

Anyway, here are my best guesses.

    1. Improves the power usage and or performance of the Processor (probably less than 1% difference)
    2. No idea
    3. No idea
    4. No idea
    5. You can now use a 230 watt adapter as a substitute for a 130 watt adapter
    6. Changes the way the CPU reacts and responds to heat (maybe the fans kick in a little differently, or maybe it only affects the range we usually never reach such as 100C+).
    7. Fixes an issue related to sleep or hibernation.

    First issue after A09:

The Interl Turbo Boost Moniot desktop gadet has topped working. It shows a big error X instead of frequency bar.

Mesage: turbo boost technology monitor has encountered a problem

It was working fine with A08...!!!

Ok, I ran prime95 and Furmark (1024x768 with 4xMPAA) for about 7 minutes and didn't experience any throttling (GPU or CPU). GPU temperatures popped over 84C at a few points, but the clock frequencies stayed at 675 and 800. Temperatures leveled out around 84-85C and I started to get bored, so I then enabled post-FX in Furmark, which made the GPU temps shoot up to 88C, but still no GPU throttling... but there was a little CPU throttling: see attached ThrottleStop log (note that I didn't have ThrottleStop actually set to lock in my CPU multiplier or clocks and this was the first time I used it). The only time the CPU throttled was when I enabled the Post-FX in Furmark. Let me know if you want me to run any other test, or if I should run them differently.

Interesting..you think theyve lifted the 84 degree limit?

Don't know... but early results seem to indicate that it has been lifted... I had my GPU over 90C a few minutes ago, and the GPU still hadn't throttled....

Not perfect but that log file is about 1000 times better than when the XPS 1645 first shipped. Congratulations to Dell for getting this fixed up. For most normal uses like any modern 3D game, throttling should not be an issue now.

Though there are many threads on this already, I am in a good mood today.

You will want: Prime95, FurMark, and ThrottleStop. Optional (but helpful) CPUID HWMonitor (for all temperatures)

Set power mode to "High Performance"
    Run ThrottleStop.
    Run Prime95.
Run FurMark (I like to use 1024x168 with 4xMSAA).
    (optional) Run HWMonitor.

    Watch as your temperatures sky-rocket.

In FurMark, watch the clocks for core and memory, they should stay at 675 and 800. In ThrottleStop, watch your multiplier and CMod. Multiplier should stay fixed at a single value (12 for the i7-720), and the CMod should stay at 100.

It had been independently verified by at least 3 people on this forum that GPU throttling no longer appears to happen at 84C with the A09 bios... not sure what temperature it happens at now, but I've personally been up to 92C on the GPU have not observed GPU throttling.

For me it shows the clock frequencies directly in the display:

If you want ThrottleStop to report your core temperature instead of the DTS column then just add the appropriate TJMax value to the ThrottleStop.ini file.

For the Core i7 it is usually 100C and for most 45nm Core 2 CPUs, it's usually 105C so add this for Core i7.

    TJMax=100

For GPU temperature monitoring you can add either GPU=1 for Nvidia cards or GPU=2 for ATI cards. Having more data in one log file is handy.

Wow thats so strange, I downloaded the latest furmark and it shows everythiing you've got except the core clock and memory...

wow i wonder what that means

With A09 I tried getting my GPU to over 85C (the previous peak under A08) and I still can't exceed that temperature. Which means throttling at 85...I'm using the mobility drivers from ATI direct...any correlation?

    -Edit
Not only am I still seeing GPU throttling I'm also seeing severe...like A03 Severe CPU throttling. Clock Modulation @ 12.5% and my multiplier was locked to 7... is going on?

My GPU goes above 90C easily but even I am facing severe CPU throttling myself while playing GTA4. Like video and sound crackling!!! :(. It has happened many times after the bios update. More tests needs to be done... :(

Ok I've gotten my GPU above 90 (which is great) but I've had to go back to using TS AND putting it to sleep to get around that keyboard issue. It's like Dell takes 1 step forward and two steps back with each BIOS release.

    -Edit
My GPU hit 99C @_@ just playing Dragon Age...that never used to happen before why is it running SO much hotter? and in Realtemp under thermal status one of my cores says LOG...what does that mean?

Wow 99 degrees! im starting to think that the GPU throttling prevented these things from blowing up!

Which might just show how bad the cooling/thermal design is in these machines. That just might have been what Dell was trying to hide. I'm happy enough that the limit has been lifted though :) (Maybe they didn't need to remove it completely though, ~90C limit would have been OK).

@Fenikkusu, I'd like to think that yours might be a malfunction with the BIOS installation or something. I haven't really seen temps that high since I moved to A09. With BIOS A08 did yours ever reach the 84C limit and GPU throttle ? Do you want to maybe try going back to A08 and see if it reaches that limit? Sorry to hear that man.

I frequently hit that 84 limit under A08 and I've seen temps this high before back on A03 during the winter...but that was after playing Crysis for HOURS and it was only 94C not 99C...this happened today after 30-40 minutes of playing the far less intensive Dragon Age.

Sidenote: It's hard to say which is more intense for the GPU. Crysis may be more visually impressive, but unless you are capping the fps such as with Vertical Sync and are hitting the limit, both games will be churning out the maximum fps they can. There are also a few other factors such as the parts of the GPU that are being (over)worked.

Hmm.... How is your thermal paste application and dust accumulation at the vent (when was the last time the paste was applied/ when was the dust cleaned out?)? What is your ambient temperature like? I don't want to jump to conclusions, but do you think that maybe your card might just be a bad one or malfunctioning. On the other hand, these things just plain run hot in this chassis, and under load...

I'm still using the Stock thermal paste...when I start working in a few weeks I plan on changing it to AS5. There is no dust accumulation, I hit the laptop with compressed air once or twice a week. The ambient temp is about 24C (Today) I do think it's possible it's malfunctioning...not sure how to verify that though.
