    Hello,

My xps 15 had a missaligned frame. I bought it in Germany and now they decided to offer me a new one as a replacement and pick up the old one. The problem that I have now is that they do not have the ADVANCED-N 6230 Intel Wireless card in their selection anymore.     They have also told me that they probably will not get it in the selection ever again so I can't have the exact same configuration as my old laptop anymore. they can only offer me the lower spec card 1030 or something. I know the differences between the cards. One has one band the other offers dual band.

The question now, can I replace the 1030 with the ADVANCED-N 6230 if I buy it myself or is there a difference in the cabeling (2 antennas)

is it reliable (the same) if I do the replacement myself?

Also, what would you write back to them if they say to you that your old configuration is not availible anymore and that your only option is to settle with something that is lower spec?

    thanks!

You can replace the N1030 card with the N6230 card. Both cards use two antennas. The only cavaet is that you need to remove some screws to do it as it is not available by just removing one screw at the back.

Maybe they would let you swap the 6230 from the wonky-framed one into your new one? It won't be hard to do, if you're at all comfortable inside computers.

Not sure about the number of antennae - I have a 3rd WiFi one that's left disconnected because I dont have a 3x3 card but other people here haven't had more than the number required for what they bought...

You should get money back and/or something extra free, if they can't give you equivalent spec.

I wouldn't accept a 1030 for a 6230. Tell them you want one with a 6300 (or 6200 at a minimum) AND a separate bluetooth card. If they don't, then it's not an equivalent system, and you could ask for a refund instead.

edit: you could always replace it yourself, it's quite easy, but you shouldn't have to

I wrote them back that I won't accept the exchange and that I insist to receive an equivalent or better wireless card. I also won't accept a refund because I've waited more than 4 weeks for the laptop to arrive.

It should also be noted that I am dealing with the business customer care department as I ordered the notebook through my company.

Closing the email I wrote that I am prepared to wait even a month using my old device until they have a worthy wireless card noting that in the U.S. the 6230 card is availible.

Now I am waiting for their reply. I suppose I don't have to accept the refund or could they foce me to?
IMO I am entitled to receive the device I've configured. It's not my fault that they send me a defective device and I am also not willing to compromise in any way..

I'll keep you updated on the case

does anyone else find it very strange that people keep reporting that dell is either out of this item and now even never planning to offer it, yet still, today, it is listed as the recommended wireless card option when customizing. something doesn't make sense here. thoughts?

It could just be that certain markets are out of the part... Dell's recommendation worked too well perhaps.

They must follow different product strategies in different Markets. In Germany for example they won't offer anything but the 1030 wireless card. in the U.S you can still purchase many other cards and also there are different options availible for other parts as well.

it is truly strange that they discontinue a certain configuration where the only option is a DOWNGRADE. maybe someone can explain?

I think you should just accept the lower card and ask for compensation/upgrade for other parts. While you do that buy a 6230 from amazon or whatever you like. The wireless card is one of the most accessible part on your rig, remove the bottom plate(not sure how many screws on xps15, but they are just some screws lol), remove 1 screw holding the card in place and disconnect antenna, change the card, replace everything back, good to go.

You'd get your rig much faster this way and depends what they give you for compensation, you might even make some profit.

I think that this is the best Idea. Since they will send me a new device and it takes a few days for them to come pick up the old device I can even swap the wireless card from my old one to the new one. On top I can ask for an upgrade. What would you guys upgrade. Below is my configuration. I think it would be good to get extra warranty as an Upgrade

They insured me that the replacement system will be brand new built. So I'd like to take them by the word and believe that it will be a complete new system in. I am a bit paranoid that they will give me a refurb. but how can I ever be sure that its a complete new System?

I hate refurb systems, they always break or have some sort of problem.
    Pls give me some advice.

    It's hard to tell.
You should first search for signs of wear on the laptop itself. If present, takes pictures with a good camera (not cell phone) and complain (telling them they promised a brand new laptop and not a refurb).

I also have an idea to look for invisible marks of use. If they didn't change the hard drive, you could read its S.M.A.R.T. data with Passmark DiskCheckup. Look for the number in the column "raw value" and in the row "power on time". This number = total number of hours the hdd has been on, since it existed. A HDD from a new laptop that has been on for let's say 48 hours would be suspicious.

    reporting back:

I've received the replacement of my new dell laptop. The frame has no missallignment now which is great so no movement of the frame on an even surface. I also think that its a new device and its not refurbished as everything made a new impression and the HDD has 0 spinning hours in the SMART reading.

However i am not happy with a new problem with the new device. The fan sounds different than with my old device. There is an extra "humming/buzzing noise" that layers beneeth the regular air blow noise of the fan which is highly annoying; especially when the fan is spinning slowly which it does most of the time. Since I have my old device still here and I have not sent it back yet I could compare very well and my old xps fan only makes the "air flow" noise when the fan is running which is not as penetrant and annoying as my new xps.

In this case, what would you do? Send it back and demand another new one? what will they say and what should I do best to finally get a device that i am happy with?

    thanks for the help !

Is it possible that the fan noise will adjust after the laptop has been used for a while ??

If you are not happy with your replacement, then return it as well, after all ,these unites cost a lot of money.
Waiting on hope for your fan to sound OK is not an option I would consider if I it were me.

exxi, what about that wireless card? Did you get anything better than the 1030 or did they upgrade another component?

No, they delivered it with the 1000 card but I agreed that I would replace the 1000 card with my old 6230 because its really easy and it worked also very well. Now I have the problem with the fan noise..

what would you guys do? return it once again and demand another replacement? do you think they would deliver a new one again? Can i take apart my old one and take the good fan out of it and put it in my new machine? I still have the old one here they will pick it up soon but would you do such a fan replacement or is it too risky ?

Would be great to hear the opinion of some experts here? It would also be great to hear what you would do in my case...

    thanks!

Would you Adam and Eve it. After weeks of complaining to Dell about them removing the 6230 option and them telling me it probably will not be coming back, they have re-added the option to the UK configurator. Hooray!! They still have not added the non-3D FHD screen though (boooooooooo!!)

Same for Poland. Along with the single 640GB drive and the non-3D FHD :)
