Hi,
Planning a reinstall for my new 1710 when it turns up. Anyway I have seen several posts about needed a AHCI driver when installing Vista, however this information seems to be always coupled with media direct which I don't think I have on my laptop (don't really want it either). So I'm not sure if it required for a regular Vista re-install.
Thanks very much,

If I recall, on the 1710 you dont need to worry about AHCI. Just insert your OS Install disk and boot up the unit.
Thats how I installed Vista on my 1710 before it died. -
Boot into your BIOS and change the HD mode from AHCI to IDE. When Vista is reinstalled, boot up, download the AHCI drivers for you mobo, and everything should be fine. That way you don't need AHCI drivers at install. Either way should work.

I hate to spoil the party but ACHI vs Compatibility Mode = no noticeable difference. I went back to compatibility mode and the system boots just as fast and the programs open just as quick. I realized how useless ACHI mode is in a laptop running on a 5400rpm drive.

I don't know anything about compatibility mode with regards to AHCI!
I also thought that Vista NEEDED AHCI to be enabled. Just shows that I don't know much on the subject! -
It happens to me on all my systems if I don't load the drivers. But like I was saying I don't see any improvement in disk access or overall system performance with it enabled so I just turned it off. -
Well I will give it a go with ACHI if it is already enabled, if not, then I will try the compatibility mode. Of course this is all subject to random BSODs turning up or not!
AHCI and reinstall
