Just noticed that when you customize a S-XPS 16 in the US, it now shows up as having a 5730. Good news? [IMG]

So notebookcheck puts the 5730 just above the 5650, which is a few spots above the 4670. Sounds like a reasonable upgrade... maybe not a huge increase in performance... but it is DX11 and has the other new features of the 5000 series cards.

I see that, nice find. It's on Core i7 systems only so far (XPS 1645).

I guess we all 'knew' that the 5730 would eventually be available after seeing the Graphics Driver from Dell listed as being for the 4670 and the 5730.

That is great news.... I'm ready to order, but.... I see the RGBLED is now gone from the screen choices

All I need is for those two items to appear at the same time and I'll have myself a new laptop!

India, New Zealand & Australia have the HD5650, which is a different card than the HD5730. Only USA has this one so far.

If you're unfamiliar with the differences between the 5730 and 4670, here's a run down:

    main improvements:
400 pipelines, up from 320 - allowing for potentially 25% more performance per clock
DirectX 11 and Shader model 5 support (compared to DX10.1 and SM4.1)
including OpenCL and DirectCompute 11 support
    about 35% lower power consumption
Addition of Supersampling Antialiasing (high HQ than Multisampling)
Angle independent anisotropic filtering (everything gets filtered now)

Everything else should be about the same. Performance difference probably won't be very noticeable, but it does support a lot more eye candy.

Since my order was in production, I just called them right now and was able to upgrade... So the charge is $100 extra from the ATI 4670... just to let you kow.

Thanks a lot! After I heard the news of updated 5650 in some countries, I was worried that I would have to return the system since I ordered it on May 17 (10 days ago) and it might be shipped by now...

Fortunately, it was still in production and it took me 5 minutes to upgrade to 5730, which is significantly better than 4670. The guy told me it will take 10 business days from today for the new system to arrive.

    I feel lucky :D

May I ask what model you ordered? A 1645 with i7 quadcore (clarksfield) cpu or a 1647 with a dual core cpu (arrendale)?

I find it strange that they're not adding the option to the 1647 model... Yet?

If you want to upgrade a system you already own, it can be done but you have to find a way to get the new motherboard. The GPU is soldered to it. Sometimes it's possible to order spare parts from Dell or other places.

Never heard of Dell offering a way otherwise to update the GPU or other handware in a laptop, you're on your own basically, they don't sell or do the work themselves. Unless of course, your current system is defective, and they send the new part out as replacement...

On the Canadian site the highest spec'd XPS1645 is $1599 after upgrading the screen to 1080p and it now comes with a 5730 AND 8GB of RAM. I am changing my order to that, savings of $364.

For some reason you can now only configure the 1920x1080 display with the $1499 model, NONE of the others...they all are locked at 1600x900.

Hmm... makes me wonder: Do they not have the organization to update ALL the websites in some kind of orderly fashion? One would think if they WANTED to they could update them all at once.. Or all at 12:00AM in whichever timezone you may fall under... But that wouldn't make sense because it would be weird to have half of a nation able to purchase, and half not.

    I just don't understand? haha

might have something to do with different parts warehouses on different continents or maybe they wont update the spec sheet if they have too much of a certain sku they have to sellthrough in one country...

I am in Australia and had just ordered the 1647 with the 5650 when I saw that the US was getting the 5730. I rang my saleswoman who said that they did not have the option here for it and probably would not since we had just got the 5650.

*sigh* this is all sorts of confusing. The US 1647 hasn't gotten either of the 5000's yet. Ours still has the 4670. And worse, why is _any_ country still selling a core2 version of the XPS16 at all. It's only $100 cheaper for pretty much junk (core2 6600 + ati 3670) here on the US site.

Has anyone from the US been able to get a 1647 w/5730 by calling in directly?

All the dell.ca configures with the 5730 offer 1080p as well as 900p now. They must have added that mid-day today.

The US site has the 820QM. If you want something better, like the Extreme - you can get a 5870 with it on the Alienware line.

Nah i meant something like an i7 dual core or even i5, dont know if the quad core is practical or necessary...and i hear it produces the most heat and uses most power.

There's not very much difference. The Core i7/i5 dual-cores use 35-watts, only down 10-watts from the quad-cores. If you're not limited by funds, why would you want a lower performing setup? Quad-core can always be taken advantage of if you multi-task.

I realise this probably isn't new news and the source isn't known to be the most reliable but for all us UK SXPS users, I spoke to a Dell rep who told me that the 5730 will be coming to the UK but as of right now there is no time frame

Damn! I wanted to get an upgrade but the DELL rep told me they dont have an available motherboard w/ 5730 available yet.

rough estimate on the upgrade price ranges around 300 to 400 SGD.(as per dell rep)

I have past experience on issues like upgrading components from Dell. If it's a part not sold in the official chain but is available for system builds and replacement parts, and you want to flat out buy the part yourself, the best approach is to try and order it as a spare part, otherwise they won't sell it to you. Sometimes you can get lucky and the rep will just dispatch the part as a replacement under your warranty and get it free...

thank gaah, got an idea from you, but maybe for some few more months since the 5730 is quite new, perhaps the stocks they currently have are the ones with the 4670.

hi gaah, based in your post on page 1. does it mean, it doesn't really offer boost in performance? :( yeeks. ok so it's useless then to upgrade for us early adopters. it would only beneficial for new orders then?

You know, I'd like to think that Dell learned their lesson somewhat and thoroughly tested out the 5730 set-ups to fix the throttling (CPU & GPU), making it non-existent with that card. However, prior hiccups from Dell and that same chassis (at least to my knowledge) makes me think otherwise on that issue.... Can't wait to see the test results (throttlestop, furmark, etc) from someone with that card, maybe wetcardboard will be the one? lol ;)

I'm expecting to be able to run most games on medium, if not high @ 1280x720 @ 40+FPS. I Play Call of Duty, Bad Company 2, Mass Effect 2, Crysis & Warhead, Metro 2033, Just Cause 2, Gears of War, all the Half-Life related games as well as Blizzard Classics. The only games I expect to have any trouble with on high settings at 720p is Metro 2033 and Crysis, but we will see maybe I'm overly optomistic.

The big difference in the card is basically that is consumes much less power (therefore less heat) and gives DX 11 and Pixel Shader 5 as compared to DX10 and PS 4.

I would say that it is a considerable upgrade over the previous 4670 in terms of overall performance, but it's not something that will blow you away.
